Santa Cruz, Bolivia, observamos una Gaviota Reidora Leucophaeus atricilla, el primer registro en Bolivia. Adicionalmente, observamos comportamiento indicativo de anidación de la Gallareta Chica Fulica leucoptera, una especie que se consideraba como visitante no reproductiva en Bolivia, así como una Gallareta Andina Fulica ardesiaca, el primer registro para el depto. Santa Cruz. La reproducción de F. leucoptera en la laguna Guapilo fue confrmada el 5 de mayo de 2018 mediante la fotografía de un polluelo. Box 50007, SE-104 05 Stockholm, Sweden b Department of Zoology, University of Stockholm, SE-106 91 Stockholm, Sweden c Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark Received 29 August 2001; received in revised form 17 January 2002 Abstract Based on their highly specialized ‘‘tracheophone’’ syrinx, the avian families Furnariidae (ovenbirds), Dendrocolaptidae (woodcreepers), Formicariidae (ground antbirds), Thamnophilidae (typical antbirds), Rhinocryptidae (tapaculos), and Conop- ophagidae (gnateaters) have long been recognized to constitute a monophyletic group of suboscine passerines. However, the monophyly of these families have been contested and their interrelationships are poorly understood, and this constrains the pos- sibilities for interpreting adaptive tendencies in this very diverse group. In this study we present a higher-level phylogeny and classification for the tracheophone birds based on phylogenetic analyses of sequence data obtained from 32 ingroup taxa. Both mitochondrial (cytochrome b) and nuclear genes (c-myc, RAG-1, and myoglobin) have been sequenced, and more than 3000 bp were subjected to parsimony and maximum-likelihood analyses. The phylogenetic signals in the mitochondrial and nuclear genes were compared and found to be very similar. The results from the analysis of the combined dataset (all genes, but with transitions at third codon positions in the cytochrome b excluded) partly corroborate previous phylogenetic hypotheses, but several novel arrangements were also suggested. -

Estades∙[email protected] Abstract ∙ The Chilean Woodstar (Eulidia yarrellii) is a critically endangered hummingbird of the Atacama desert in northern Chile, with a population estimate of around 320 individuals in 2017. To generate useful information for the design of population-recovery actions, we conducted a study of the nesting ecology of the species between 2006 and 2008. Our specific goals were to provide a quantitative descrip- tion of the species breeding habitat, to describe the basic breeding biology of the species, and to assess the current levels of nesting success. Most of our work was conducted in the valleys of Azapa and Vitor, two of the three last valleys where the species is known to persist. Alt- hough we recorded some juveniles in Azapa, we only observed the species nesting in one site in Chaca (Vitor valley), in a small (1.4 ha) olive grove where 13–20 simultaneous nests were found during the studied breeding seasons. Nesting occurs in September–October, and its tim- ing is apparently synchronized with the flowering of chañar (Geoffroea decorticans). The species has a particularly long breeding period with an average of 48 days (17 d for the egg stage, 31 d for the nestling stage). -

Day 2 Having arrived smoothly courtesy of American Airlines, we immediately set to work in the savannahs surrounding the Viru Viru airport. Here we were delighted to see Greater Rhea, Red-winged Tinamou, Campo Flicker and flocks of Blue-crowned Parakeets. After a fine lunch in Santa Cruz we headed for the Piraí River on the west side of the city, and the Urubó savannahs beyond it. Once we found a sheltered spot out of the wind we had great birding, seeing, among many others, Speckled Chachalaca, Yellow-tufted Woodpecker, Blue-winged Parrotlet, Green-cheeked Parakeet, Golden-collared and Chestnut-fronted Macaws, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Thrush-like Wren, and Greater Thornbird. A pair of Titi Monkeys was also popular here. Day 3 This morning was spent at the Jardín Botánico, ten kilometres east of the city of Santa Cruz. By the roadside we saw White Woodpecker and Red-crested Cardinal and around the pond we found a dozy Brown-throated Three- toed Sloth, Social and Rusty-margined Flycatchers (very thoughtfully perched next to each other for ease of comparison), Blue-crowned Trogon, Blue-crowned Motmot and Narrow-billed Woodcreeper. Highlights in the forest included Rufous Casiornis, White-wedged Piculet, White-crested Tyrannulet, Fawn-breasted Wren, Ferruginous Pygmy-owl and a family of Silvery Marmosets. This afternoon we drove to Los Volcanes where we were greeted by Andean Condor, Military Macaw, Channel-billed Toucan, Red-billed and Turquoise-fronted Parrots and noisy, sky-filling flocks of Mitred Parakeets. -

Althought it has low population density and is remote from big cities, in the past it received well-deserved attention from researchers. This was probably due to the presence of many interesting species, among them some threatened, with taxonomic singularities, and/or endemism. -

The Influence of Agriculture on Avian Communities Near Villavicencio

Rapid attainment of adult foot size likely reflects the importance of the many tasks the foot performs (e.g., perching, climb- ing, feeding). At hatching, bill width was already 49.4% of adult size, although, at day 35, bill width was closer to adult size than length or depth. This was the result of a more rapid development in width before hatching, since the growth rates of all bill dimensions were about the same throughout nestling development. Since bill width was measured at the base of the bill, it is about equivalent to gape width. The rapid increase of gape width in other species (Dunn, Condor 77:431-438, 1975; Holcomb, Nebraska Bird Rev. 36:2232, 1968; Holcomb and Twiest, Ohio J. Sci. 68:277-284, 1968; Royama, Ibis 108:313347, 1966) has been interpreted (OConnor,’ Ibis 119:147-166, 1975) as important in increasing parental feeding efficiency because it allows the young to consume larger food items. Young Monk Parakeets are fed by regurgitation. This material was described as a white, milky fluid (Alexandra 1977). Ac- cordingly, the ability to consume large food items may be of little value to nestlings. Since food is provided by the parents in a rather processed form, there would be little advantage in rapid bill growth for the purpose of processing food items. Fledglings, too, are fed by regurgitation, although they soon begin to do some foraging for themselves. Yet, as Portmann (Proc. 11th Int. Omithol. Congr. 138-151, 1955) has shown, as the brain develops early, the skull must develop similarly to accommodate it. -
