The theme of t.-as 51st Annual Meeting of the Association is reflective of ACHE's commitment to lead higher education's response to the learning needs of an increasingly diverse society. Under the direction of Nancy F. Gadbow and the 1989 Program Committee, the development and design of this meeting were guided by the following statement: As we move toward the 21st century, we are becoming more aware of the needs of our changing multicultural society. What we understand as minorities today will become the majority, while poverty and limited education continue to impact the lives of too many in our world. ,t the same time, work and the workplace are being reshaped by ad- vancing technology. If education can unlock human potential and break the cycle of poverty, powerlessness, and despair, then continuing higher education holds the key. It is capable of matching the emerging diversity of human needs and the changing world of work with the resources of the university, where research, teaching, and service can be directed toward reaching persons of all ages and groups. ACHE must adopt a new agenda to make education responsive to a new multicultural age. The College of Charleston was a wonderful host. Abbie F. Smith and her Local Arrangements Committee did a remarkable job of introducing us to the warm, friendly, and hospitable City of Charleston, a city whose spirit could not be broken despite the ravages of Hurricane Hugo. Certainly, we agree that "Charleston is a city of infinite grace and dignity, a living reflection ofa way of life that has all but vanished. A city whose people welcome you with open warmth and pleasure." I wish to extend my personal thanks to those individuals who provided the support for this publication: Peter K. Race, Racism, and Anti-racist action with Children ages 0-8 ABOUT THIS GUIDE At MELA, we believe in Mississippi children’s inherent potential, regardless of race, socio-economic status, family history, physical ability or other distinction. Because continued Racism (and the fear, stress, and anxiety that goes with it) harms so many of our children, their families, and in turn, our whole state, we know we can- not ignore it in our work. Unless we tackle the root causes of it and its effects head on, it will continue to be a major stumbling block to our mission-- to achieve systemic change leading to the holistic development of Mississippi children in their first 8 years of life. It can be difficult for adults to even broach the subject with one another, which is why we’ve scoured our own bookshelves, asked our friends and teachers, and researched what diverse, knowledgeable people on the internet recommend to help parents, teachers, and caregivers talk about this difficult topic with our young children, regardless of their racial background. It is our hope that every family in Mississippi will find resources that apply to them whether they are parents of color working to dismantle implicit racist messages their children may have internalized about their own race, or white families seeking to educate their children and work towards a more equitable, anti-racist Mississippi. Please use this guide to find MELA-approved books, articles, podcasts, videos, and tips for engaging young children around conversations of race.     “Our Quilt of Many Colors”: Exploring our Uniqueness, Similarities and Differences through Stories by Amy Mateer, 2020 CTI Fellow Selwyn Elementary This curriculum unit is recommended for: Kindergarten to 2nd grade General Education Classrooms Keywords: racial identity, self, cultural awareness, acceptance, tolerance, diversity, uniqueness, cultural similarities and differences Teaching Standards: See Appendix 1 for teaching standards addressed in this unit. Synopsis: In this unit, early elementary students begin to have academic conversations with the guidance of their teachers regarding elements of race, identity, cultural awareness and the similarities and differences among their classmates. Through read-aloud books, conversations, activities and a culminating task where students will explore concepts of race, identity, diversity and culture. This unit aligns with the North Carolina Social Studies standards on culture. This unit is composed of four parts to complete over the course of the year in each quarter or periodically throughout the school year. At the end of each part students will complete one square of their individual quilt that explores the concepts being taught throughout the unit. At the end of the unit, students will take their four-block square quilt and add it to their classmates’ quilt to create a classroom quilt that shows the similarities and differences of each person in our classroom. At the end of the unit we will share our individual quilts as well as look at the uniqueness of each square and how when we put all of the pieces together - we have created a unique and beautiful quilt showcasing each one of us in our classroom community.
