Night of the Museums in Tampere on Saturday 18.5. 1 NIGHT OF THE MUSEUMS IN TAMPERE ON SATURDAY 18.5. Tickets: Entrance fee (wristband) 10€, group ticket 25€ (max. 5 persons/group), children under 7 years: no entry fee. Tampere regional transport has three buses driving the Night of the Museums-line - marked with a orange line on the map - from 6pm to 11.30pm. The first bus starts from the Museum Centre Vapriikki at 6pm, departures approximately every 10 minutes. With the Night of the Museums entrance wristband you can travel by the bus between our attractions. With the bus 40B you can get to the Automobile and road museum Mobilia in Kangasala by showing your entrance wristband. Buses 2, 6, 9, 15, 40A and 40B take you to the Moomin museum. If need be, inform the driver and the buses will also stop on the regular bus stops on the route. 1. Käppi performs in the exhibition of Taru Mäntynen. 17. Their music consists of different saxophones, flutes and other wooden wind instruments, contrabass, drums and different percussion instruments. The upcoming exhibition, on loan from the world’s only Moomin Museum located in Tampere, Finland, showcases the universal values of the Moomins, such as equality, inclusion and respect for nature. The exhibition, Moomin Animations – Thrills and Cuddles, which is brought to the United States by the Embassy of Finland in Washington D.C., will open at National Children’s Museum on September 3, 2021, and will be on display inside the Visiting Exhibit Hall until January 9, 2022. This is the first time this exhibition travels abroad. It highlights the rich history of Moomin animations, which are based on the Moomin books and comic strips created by the renowned Finnish artist and author Tove Jansson (1914–2001). The Moomins are white and roundish fantastical characters with large snouts. The Moomin family and their friends live an adventurous life in the idyllic and peaceful Moominvalley. “The Moomins always treat nature with respect and live in harmony with the environment.     153 Stories of a Place in Time Moomin Museum in Tampere, Finland Diana Rimniceanu In the 2017 spring term, the professional design studio of Public Building at Tampere University of Technology in Finland set a design task for a build- ing that not only occupies and strengthens an urban place in Tampere but also presents imagined spaces: a museum for the stories, characters and places of the Moomin graphic novels by Finnish illustrator Tove Jansson. These graphic novels form the cultural and literary heart of many Finnish childhoods. For the design of such a cultural building, questions of place, landscape, the experience of spatial and material qualities are crucial. The beauty arises from the unexpected. And suddenly it was silence. The factory’s interior courtyard has its own sound of silence. Beyond the brick walls the fuss of the city life does not enter, nor the sound of the rapids, nor the wind. It is a place out of time, out of space; it gives me shelter. The project by Diana Rimniceanu begins with a museum in search of a place of its own in the city of Tampere. But it is no ordinary building . and 154 thus . no ordinary place. The intervention aspires to provide the frame- work for the imagined spaces created by Jansson. And the place? Old bare brick factory walls and a river, right in the heart of Tampere; each with its own story, building a strong and lively identity. The museum extension aspires to express the Moomin stories through an architecture that is specific and autonomous, capable of preserving the richness and uniqueness of the place while revealing the unexpected land- scapes that it hides; an architecture that grows gradually, scene by scene, creating encounters between the Moomin creatures, the historic industrial buildings and the new visitors.

The growth of the cotton industry would fuel the development of capitalism across Europe and, indeed, the rest of the world as the century advanced. 1 Kristine Bruland2 has argued, with particular reference to Norway between 1840 and 1870, that the spread of the industry across Europe was greatly influenced by the technological advances and organizational practices developed, and exported, from Great Britain. As well as Norway, Belgium, Germany, the Russia Empire, and Sweden all benefitted from British expertise. The cotton industry in Finland developed rather later than in many other European countries, not helped by the country’s location on the North Eastern shores of the Baltic which froze for large parts of the year, cutting off supply routes and making international travel very challenging. As in other North European countries, in its early days the Finnish industry drew many of its industrialists and skilled workers from Britain. Later on, these were followed by a new social group that had emerged in Britain between the skilled workers and the mill owners: the cotton masters, technical specialists. 3 In Britain, this stratification was common in such industrial areas as Lancashire.

Her younger brothers also pursued careers in the arts, Per Olov becoming a photographer, and Lars a writer and comic-strip artist. The family lived in Helsinski, where Tove Marika Jansson was born on August 9, 1914. They were, however, ethnically Swedish and part of the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland. This, combined with growing up in a rather bohemian family and eventually recognizing her lesbianism, gave Jansson a sense and appreciation of otherness; nevertheless, the closeness of her family and her deep understanding of a sense of place grounded her both in belonging to her social unit and her larger culture, a dichotomy that would inform her writing. The Jansson family spent their summers at a cottage on an island in the Gulf of Finland, a place that delighted and inspired her. In later years, she stated, "Had it not been for my very happy childhood, I might never have started writing . I never wrote entirely for children at all--maybe it was just for myself, to find a way back to the lost world of adventures with happy endings, to the confidence, the constant curiosity, and the boundless possibilities, never questioned, .
