World's Largest Hotel Chain Marriott International Arrives in Finland World’s largest hotel chain Marriott International arrives in Finland At the end of 2019, the Marriott International hotel chain will open its first hotel in Finland in connection with Tampere Hall. The hotel to be built in Tampere is part of the Courtyard by Marriott hotel brand, which is directed at modern business travellers and families. In the Tampere Courtyard by Marriott hotel, there will be 11 aboveground floors and 229 hotel rooms. Reservations for rooms can be made starting 6 months before the hotel opens. The hotel project is expected to have a great impact on Finland’s attractiveness and the international recognition of the entire country ‘It is important for Marriott International to establish a larger presence in the Nordic Countries and particularly in Finland. Tampere is one of the central cities in the country. It is a growing and vibrant city whose multiple development projects promise an interesting future for it. We expect our hotel to attract visitors and events to Tampere from across the world’, describes Tuomas Laakso, the development manager of Marriott International in Central and Northern Europe. Lauri Lyly, the mayor of Tampere, is pleased with the fact that of all the cities in Finland, Tampere is the place where the first Marriot hotel will be opened: ‘The hotel will give a nice internationality boost to our city, and it will make a great addition to our event, culture, and travel offering. The Marriot hotel chain has over 100 million loyal customers around the world, and now they will have a good reason to come to Tampere’, says Lyly. The CEO of Tampere Hall, Paulina Ahokas, stresses the fact that the hotel will further improve the already comprehensive service selection provided for conference and congress visitors and increase the attractiveness of the largest culture and congress centre in the Nordic Countries: ‘Tampere Hall, the Moomin Museum, and the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra annually attract hundreds of thousands of visitors, and now that the world’s largest hotel chain is arriving in Tampere to complete this ensemble, it feels like we have hit the veritable jackpot. From now on, we will be able to host, for instance, major international conferences in a whole new way.’ A connecting corridor will be built between the entrance hall of Tampere Hall and the Tampere Courtyard by Marriott hotel, and the conference and congress services will remain in Tampere Hall. In addition, Yliopistokiinteistöt, Tampere Hall, and the City of Tampere are currently investigating the possibility of building a tunnel connection from the hotel to the campus of the University of Tampere, which is located on the other side of the Kalevantie road. ‘A direct connection from the hotel to the main building of the university 1 Tampere-talo Oy Yliopistonkatu 55 / PL16, 33101 Tampere puh. 03 243 4111 Y-Tunnus 0706363-7 / ALV rek. would also increase the appeal of the new university of Tampere in a tangible way’, comments Liisa Laakso, the Rector of the University of Tampere. A total of 226 hotel rooms and restaurant and gym services have been outlined for the Tampere Marriot hotel. Keva, the Finnish public sector pensions institution, will purchase the site for the hotel from the City of Tampere at fair market value. The construction of the hotel will commence immediately after the construction licence has been granted. The estimated construction time for the project is 18 months. The architecture firm ALA Architects will be responsible for designing the hotel. The investment will be made by Marriott International with Odyssey Hotel Group as its commercial partner. SRV Rakennus Oy will be responsible for the construction work. The hotel project began already in 2013, but it has been delayed from its original schedule due to the rapid expansion of Marriott International and related major development projects. Tampere Hall • Completed in 1990, the new extension was taken into use in 2016. • 371,000 visitors (2016), 7.5 million individual visitors during the 26 years of operation. • The Main Auditorium of Tampere Hall is the largest concert hall in Finland. • Has been selected as the best place to arrange conferences, congresses, and events in Finland 7 times in a row (Innolink 2015, TSN Gallup 2003-2013). The world’s only Moomin Museum was opened in Tampere Hall in June 2017. This is the first time this exhibition travels abroad. It highlights the rich history of Moomin animations, which are based on the Moomin books and comic strips created by the renowned Finnish artist and author Tove Jansson (1914–2001). The Moomins are white and roundish fantastical characters with large snouts. The Moomin family and their friends live an adventurous life in the idyllic and peaceful Moominvalley. “The Moomins always treat nature with respect and live in harmony with the environment.     153 Stories of a Place in Time Moomin Museum in Tampere, Finland Diana Rimniceanu In the 2017 spring term, the professional design studio of Public Building at Tampere University of Technology in Finland set a design task for a build- ing that not only occupies and strengthens an urban place in Tampere but also presents imagined spaces: a museum for the stories, characters and places of the Moomin graphic novels by Finnish illustrator Tove Jansson. These graphic novels form the cultural and literary heart of many Finnish childhoods. For the design of such a cultural building, questions of place, landscape, the experience of spatial and material qualities are crucial. The beauty arises from the unexpected. And suddenly it was silence. The factory’s interior courtyard has its own sound of silence. Beyond the brick walls the fuss of the city life does not enter, nor the sound of the rapids, nor the wind. It is a place out of time, out of space; it gives me shelter. The project by Diana Rimniceanu begins with a museum in search of a place of its own in the city of Tampere. But it is no ordinary building . and 154 thus . no ordinary place. The intervention aspires to provide the frame- work for the imagined spaces created by Jansson. And the place? Old bare brick factory walls and a river, right in the heart of Tampere; each with its own story, building a strong and lively identity. The museum extension aspires to express the Moomin stories through an architecture that is specific and autonomous, capable of preserving the richness and uniqueness of the place while revealing the unexpected land- scapes that it hides; an architecture that grows gradually, scene by scene, creating encounters between the Moomin creatures, the historic industrial buildings and the new visitors.

The Jansson family spent their summers at a cottage on an island in the Gulf of Finland, a place that delighted and inspired her.
