This study investigated the levels of Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in water and whole fish. We sampled 40 juvenile silversides Odontesthes regia and 41 juvenile puye Galaxias maculatus from the Valdivia River estuary, adjacent to the urban area in southern South America (Chile). Samples were analyzed using a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. In water samples, metals except Zn were mostly below the detection limits and all metals were below the maximum levels established by local guidelines in this estuary. In whole fish samples, concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, and Cd were significantly higher in puyes than in silversides. Additionally, Zn, Pb, and Mn were correlated to body length and weight in puyes, whereas Cd was correlated to body length in silversides. The mean concentration of heavy metals in silverside and puyes were higher than those reported in the literature. -

The species were on sandy and rocky beaches, coastal lagoons, estuaries, mangroves, rocky breakwaters of ports, and shallow subtidal areas (14–47 m depth). A total of 78 bivalve species and 82 gastropod species were recorded. Most of these were associated with sandy and rocky beaches and breakwaters of ports. The estuaries host 30 species and the coastal lagoons only two. In the shallow subtidal there were 18 gastropod species and 40 bivalve species representing 36.3% of all. This study adds 24 bivalve species and 29 gastropod species not recorded in previous studies for a total count of 213 species (102 bivalves and 111 gastropods) for Gulf of Tehuantepec. -

Los moluscos marinos y dulceacuícolas se tratan separadamente, y se da información sobre el número de familias, géneros y especies conocidas, su distribución geográfica y estado de su conserva ción y utilización por el hombre. ABSTRACT The present state of knowiedge on the aquatic mollusks of Peru is reviewed herein. Key words: Mollusca, Biodiversity, Utilization and conservation, southeastern Pacifico INTRODUCCiÓN Se estima que, aproximadamente, han sido descritas más de 100000 especies vivientes y El Phylum Mollusca incluye invertebrados se conoce más de 20 000 especies fósiles marinos, dulceacuÍcolas y terrestres, tan dife (Solem, 1974), y on los gasterópodos y los rentes entre sí como los chitones, caracoles, bivalvos los que presentan mayor diversidad babosas, almejas, ostras, mejillones y "conchas con 67 000 y 15 000 especies, respectivamen colmillo", así como los nautilos, calamares y te.
