  • Anna Pauline Is a Jazz Vocalist and Songwriter Who Sings Straight from the Heart
Anna Pauline is a jazz vocalist and songwriter who sings straight from the heart. Born in Kalmar but raised in Höganäs, she grew up in a musical family, with a father who is a well-known trumpet player and a Danish mother familiar with the wealth of Denmark’s rich musical tradition. Anna Pauline’s multicultural identity has enriched her artistry, and her linguistic abilities have made her something of a world citizen in the jazz sphere. As a vocalist, Anna Pauline’s early inspiration came from the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O’Day, Peggy Lee, Doris Day and Marilyn Monroe, as well as from singer/songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris. Her debut as a singer came at the tender age of four, and she went on to perform in a number of amateur musicals and reviews. Anna lived and studied for a time in Copenhagen, and in 2012 she completed her master’s degree at the Malmö Conservatory. Anna sees it as her mission not only to preserve the rich heritage of vocal jazz, but to contribute to it with her own compositions and lyrics, a process she began during an extended stay in France in 1996. Her debut album, “Meant to Be”, was recorded live at Dunker’s Auditorium in Helsingborg in 2011, followed by a series of concerts in Scandinavia, as well as the US. The album was nominated that same year for the prestigious Golden Record award by Orkester Journalen, and became the readers’ choice. Anna Pauline has performed with a number of artists over the years including Peps Persson, Viktoria Tolstoy, Nils Landgren, Siw Malmqvist, Gösta Linderholm, John Pohlman, Papa Bue’s Viking Jazzband, Jesper Thilo, Gunhild Carling, Jazzin’ Jacks, Peter Asplund, Magnus Lindgren, Claes Jansson, Andreas Öberg and Anders Bergcrantz, among others.

Her artistic triumphs encompass chart-topping hits, platinum albums, and successful forays into several genres of popular music. Through her multi-faceted solo career and her legacy as an original vocalist in the group Sister Sledge, which included her lead vocals on worldwide anthems like "We Are Family" and "He's the Greatest Dancer," she's inspired millions of listeners across all generations. Kathy is currently traversing new terrain with her critically acclaimed show The Brighter Side of Day: A Tribute to Billie Holiday plus studio projects that span elements of R&B, rock, and EDM. Indeed, Kathy's reached a fascinating juncture in her journey. That journey began in Philadelphia. The youngest of five daughters born to Edwin and Florez Sledge, Kathy possessed a prodigious musical talent. Her grandmother was an opera singer who taught her harmonies while her father was one-half of Fred & Sledge, the tapping duo who broke racial barriers on Broadway. "I learned the art of music from my father and my grandmother. The business part of music was instilled through my mother," she says. Schooled on an eclectic array of artists like Nancy Wilson and Mongo Santamaría, Kathy and her sisters honed their act around Philadelphia and signed a recording contract with Atco Records.

  • Discography of the Mainstream Label
Discography of the Mainstream Label Mainstream was founded in 1964 by Bob Shad, and in its early history reissued material from Commodore Records and Time Records in addition to some new jazz material. The label released Big Brother & the Holding Company's first material in 1967, as well as The Amboy Dukes' first albums, whose guitarist, Ted Nugent, would become a successful solo artist in the 1970s. Shad died in 1985, and his daughter, Tamara Shad, licensed its back catalogue for reissues. In 1991 it was resurrected in order to reissue much of its holdings on compact disc, and in 1993, it was purchased by Sony subsidiary Legacy Records. 56000/6000 Series 56000 mono, S 6000 stereo - The Commodore Recordings 1939, 1944 - Billy Holiday [1964] Strange Fruit/She’s Funny That Way/Fine and Mellow/Embraceable You/I’ll Get By//Lover Come Back to Me/I Cover the Waterfront/Yesterdays/I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues/I’ll Be Seeing You 56001 mono, S 6001 stereo - Begin the Beguine - Eddie Heywood [1964] Begin the Beguine/Downtown Cafe Boogie/I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me/Carry Me Back to Old Virginny/Uptown Cafe Boogie/Love Me Or Leave Me/Lover Man/Save Your Sorrow 56002 mono, S 6002 stereo - Influence of Five - Hawkins, Young & Others [1964] Smack/My Ideal/Indiana/These Foolish Things/Memories Of You/I Got Rhythm/Way Down Yonder In New Orleans/Stardust/Sittin' In/Just A Riff 56003 mono, S 6003 stereo - Dixieland-New Orleans - Teagarden, Davison & Others [1964] That’s A- Plenty/Panama/Ugly Chile/Riverboat Shuffle/Royal Garden Blues/Clarinet

  • STEVE INSKEEP, Host: Our Series 50 Great Voices Continues Today With
STEVE INSKEEP, host: Our series 50 Great Voices continues today with one of the most distinctive voices of all time. (Soundbite of song, "All of Me") Ms. BILLIE HOLIDAY (Musician): (Singing) All of me, why not take all of me? Can't... INSKEEP: Billie Holiday's very personal style continues to inspire singers some five decades after her death. And in the same way, Holiday was herself inspired by great musicians she heard growing up. Tom Vitale reports from New York. TOM VITALE: Billie Holiday became famous after she recorded a 1939 protest song about lynchings of African-Americans. It was called "Strange Fruit." (Soundbite of song, "Strange Fruit") Ms. HOLIDAY: (Singing) Southern trees bear a strange fruit, blood on the leaves and blood at the root. Black bodies swinging in the Southern breeze, strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees. VITALE: The haunting vocal offers a stark illustration of Billie Holiday's greatest gift: the ability to convey emotion. Phil Schaap is curator of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Mr. PHIL SCHAAP (Curator of Jazz, Lincoln Center): She speaks to your heart. She catches your ear. She reaches your mind, and she does this with an emotional power that, of course, is genius and is beyond words. (Soundbite of song, "God Bless the Child") Ms. HOLIDAY: (Singing) Mamma may have. Papa may have. But God bless the child that's got his own, that's got his own. VITALE: The emotional power of Billie Holiday's vocals comes from the way she sings the melodies. It's about rhythm and phrasing that Holiday learned from listening to the best.
