It was only after my co-composer Sam Dixon and I wrapped our session, that I retreated to a cottage in the Cotswolds for 3 weeks to wrestle with the song’s lyrics. ‘A Love Like That’ continues a narrative that is across the new album. And in the context of love - it is about having the courage to speak openly and freely.” “The highlight for me was recording the orchestra in Tbilisi with Katie,” recalls producer Leo Abrahams. “The arrangement is written to convey the protagonist’s changing state of mind throughout the song: from turbulent to calm, sentimental to defiant. Technically this was probably the simplest arrangement on the record but we had to do almost 20 takes of the tremolando introduction to get the right amount of aggression but with an elegant resolution. The players seemed to enjoy it!” Katie Melua is one of Britain's most successful musical artists, having received over 56 platinum awards. The 35-year old is originally from Tbilisi, Georgia and moved to the UK aged 8. Her voice carries extraordinary qualities of clarity, emotional depth, and richness of tone that have been her trademarks since she released her debut album Call Off The Search when she was only 19 years old. Melua has released 7 top 10 studio albums – Call Off The Search, Piece By Piece, Pictures, The House, Secret Symphony, Ketevan and, most recently, 2016’s self- produced, critically acclaimed In Winter (she and Kate Bush remain the only two British female artists in history to achieve this). An accomplished songwriter, composer, and arranger some of Melua's most well-known hits include ‘Nine Million Bicycles’, ‘The Closest Thing to Crazy’, ‘Perfect World’, and her now infamous cover of ‘Wonderful Life’. A constantly in- demand touring artist, Melua enchants her audiences worldwide with her uniquely powerful and captivating voice, flawless performances, and charming personality. Melua’s 8th studio album will be released in the autumn of 2020. Leo Abrahams is an English musician, composer and producer. He has collaborated and produced records with a multitude of musicians including Jon Hopkins, Regina Spektor, Frightened Rabbit, Ghostpoet and Pulp. He has co-written film soundtracks including Peter Jackson's 'The Lovely Bones' (with Brain Eno) and Steve McQueen's award-winning ‘Hunger' (with David Holmes). Abrahams has also released five solo albums in styles ranging from folk to experimental, and in November undertook a 16-date solo tour of Siberia to develop a free- improvisation ambient guitar project. .

As the title suggests, Dark Days & Canapés is a record that siphons the sense of unease hanging in the air throughout the time of its creation and uses it as a fuel source. It’s also a record that dramatically fore- grounds the continuing evolution of twice- Mercury nominated Obaro as one of our most perspicacious and original songwriters. In the wake of 2015’s universally acclaimed Shedding Skin – an album which found him moving away from the beats-driven arrangements of the first two records – Dark Days & Canapés completes the transition to a fuller band sound. Integral to that transition was Obaro’s choice of producer for the record. “On previous records, the production side of things has run along 50:50 lines,” he explains, “But this time around, I wanted to see what would happen if I relaxed that a little.” Early in the process, he hooked up with producer/writer/ guitarist Leo Abrahams, perhaps best known for his work with Brian Eno and Jon Hopkins (Small Craft On A Milk Sea) and Wild Beasts (Present Tense) as well as his own feted solo albums. The two clicked immediately. “I went to his studio in East London,” recalls Obaro, “And the thing that struck me about him was that he was impossible to faze. I was de- scribing the mood I was after in quite fanciful, surreal terms, and yet he knew exactly how to translate !that into music.” The results of those early sessions - which saw guitarist Joe Newman assisting, fleshing out guitar parts on the early demos -quickly established the momentum of what followed.

    IP/05/83 Brussels, 24 January 2005 “Border Breakers”: the second year of awards for European debut albums with the highest sales in other EU countries in 2004 On Sunday, 23 January at MIDEM (International Music Market) in Cannes, European Border Breakers Awards (EBBA) were handed out for the second year. These awards go to artists whose debut albums have achieved the highest sales in the European Union outside their country of origin over the year. The awards were created at the initiative of the European Commission in cooperation with professionals from the world of European music1 and the Billboard Information Group. “These awards are a testimony to the diversity of European music and the potential of the single market” said Ján Figel’, the Member of the European Commission responsible for education, training, culture and multilingualism, at the opening ceremony. "They unite professionals from the world of music, writers, composers, performers and leading or independent producers in helping to improve the dissemination of European music across the European Union”. On 23 January, EBBA were awarded for the second year to European artists or groups and their record companies, authors and publishers who had achieved the highest sales of a debut album in 2004 in the European Union outside its country of production. Winners were selected on the basis of statistics provided by the Billboard Group in accordance with the following criteria: - original debut album of artists or groups from an EU Member State; - sales in EU Member states outside the country of production - sales between 01/09/2003 and 31/08/2004.
