  • Parody As Brand: the Case of [Adult Swim]'S Paracasual Advergames
Article Convergence: The International Journal of Research into Parody as brand: The New Media Technologies 2016, Vol. 22(2) 177–198 ª The Author(s) 2014 case of [adult swim]’s Reprints and permission: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav paracasual advergames DOI: 10.1177/1354856514546097 con.sagepub.com David Gurney Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, USA Matthew Thomas Payne University of Alabama, USA Abstract Advergames – a neologism for video games designed to advertise a product or service – are marketing devices employed to impact consumers’ purchasing decisions and, more frequently, shape their impressions of a promoted brand. The online advergames of the programming block- turned media brand [adult swim] (AS) present a clear case in which the games act as rich signifiers of brand aesthetics even if they are not directly connected to the content of the brand’s television shows, live events, and other assorted merchandise. Although these ‘casual’-style titles have game- play mechanics that are accessible to broad audiences, these advergames often exhibit a critical stance toward other games, which differentiates them from the vast majority of casual games on the market. But rather than being anti-casual, we argue that these games are best understood as being paracasual because they use parody to both trouble prevailing definitions of casual games and advergames, and deploy an aesthetic disposition that further helps define the brand. Further- more, they are an increasingly visible and vital component of a constellation of texts and practices that function as what James Paul Gee calls an ‘affinity space’ for a lucrative audience demographic.

  • Being Dr. Evil: Engaging Students with Humorous Project Premises
AC 2007-801: BEING DR. EVIL: ENGAGING STUDENTS WITH HUMOROUS PROJECT PREMISES Stephen McClain, Baylor University Stephen T. McClain is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from The University of Memphis in 1995, and he received his M.S. (1997) and Ph.D. (2002) degrees in mechanical engineering from Mississippi State University. Dr. McClain has taught classes in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, thermal systems design, convection heat transfer, internal combustion engines, and experimental design and uncertainty analysis. Page 12.303.1 Page © American Society for Engineering Education, 2007 Being Dr. Evil: Engaging Students with Humorous Project Premises Abstract Design projects or open-ended problems are assigned throughout the engineering curriculum at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). In senior design courses, assigning real- world design projects is imperative to prepare the students for the job they may be performing the following year. In the basic engineering science courses, however, finding design projects that engage the students, that demonstrate the real-world applications of the basic engineering science, and that do not seem like “busy-work” to the students requires imagination. Over the past four years, humorous projects, based on the Austin Powers movie trilogy (parodies of the James Bond movie series and other action and espionage movies), have been extremely successful in keeping students engaged in basic engineering-science projects. Three examples of “Dr. Evil” projects are discussed. One of the projects was assigned in a section of ME 242 Thermodynamics II course and involved the design of Rankine-Brayton combined cycle power plant.

This case involves Viacom's abuse of its market power over access to commercially critical networks - its highly popular Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, BET, and MTV networks - to force Cablevision to license and distribute over scarce bandwidth some dozen other Viacom networks, which Viacom calls Suite Networks, that many Cablevision subscribers do not watch and for which Cablevision would prefer to substitute competing networks. Viacom strong-armed Cablevision into carrying Suite Networks by threatening to impose a near SI billion penalty if Cablevision licensed only the Viacom networks Cablevision wanted, networks Viacom calls its Core Networks. Stated differently, unless Cablevision agreed to distribute Viacom's Suite, Cablevision would pay nearly as much for just the Core (which includes commercially critical networks) than for the Core and Suite 1 Case 1:13-cv-01278-LTS Document 25 Filed 07/16/13 Page 2 of 71 combined. Viacom's diabolical and coercive scheme, which harms competition, consumers, and Cablevision, constitutes tying and block booking in violation of the Sherman Act and New York law.
