Journal of Popular Music Studies, Volume 27, Issue 2, Pages 163–183 Return from Exile: How Extreme Metal Culture Found Its Niche with Dethklok and Postnetwork TV Joe Tompkins Allegheny College In the premiere episode of Metalocalypse, an original animated series entering its fifth season on the Adult Swim channel,1 300, 000 metalheads travel to the Artic Circle to witness Dethklok, “the world’s greatest cultural force,” as they perform a coffee jingle for the Duncan Hills Coffee Corporation. Despite adverse conditions and a mere single song set list, thousands of fans risk life and limb for the chance to witness the legendary death metal band as they perform a raucous musical ode to the virtues of “ultimate flavor.” As one reporter on the scene observes, “Never before have so many people traveled so far for such a short song.” In a further testament to the band’s outstanding popularity and market value, concertgoers eagerly sign “pain waivers” excusing Dethklok from legal liability in the all too likely event they are somehow “burned, lacerated, eaten alive, poisoned, de-boned, crushed, or hammer-smashed” during the show. Meanwhile, the performance launches the international coffee mogul Duncan Hills to monopoly status, “obliterating” the competition. When asked by news reporters if such an act of corporate sponsorship means that Dethklok is “selling out,” frontman Nathan Explosion growlingly rejoins: “We are here to make coffee metal. We will make everything metal. Blacker than the blackest black . times infinity.” Touting “the biggest

  • The Uses of Animation 1
The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape, digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. Cartoons appear all the time on television and the cinema and can be used for entertainment, advertising, 2 Aspects of Animation: Steps to Learn Animated Cartoons presentations and many more applications that are only limited by the imagination of the designer. The most important factor about making cartoons on a computer is reusability and flexibility. The system that will actually do the animation needs to be such that all the actions that are going to be performed can be repeated easily, without much fuss from the side of the animator.

This case involves Viacom’s abuse of its market power over access to commercially critical networks – its highly popular Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, BET, and MTV networks – to force Cablevision to license and distribute over scarce bandwidth some dozen other Viacom networks, which Viacom calls Suite Networks, that many Cablevision subscribers do not watch and for which Cablevision would prefer to substitute competing networks. Viacom strong-armed Cablevision into carrying Suite Networks by threatening to impose a near $ billion penalty if Cablevision licensed only the Viacom networks Cablevision wanted, networks Viacom calls its Core Networks. Stated differently, unless Cablevision agreed to distribute Viacom’s Suite, Cablevision would pay nearly as much for just the Core (which includes commercially critical networks) than for the Core and Suite 1 Case 1:13-cv-01278-LTS Document 9 Filed 03/07/13 Page 2 of 60 combined. Viacom’s diabolical and coercive scheme, which harms competition, consumers, and Cablevision, constitutes tying and block booking in violation of the Sherman Act and New York law.

FTP 2 Packet 5: The End is the Beginning of the End Edition Packet by: Harris Bunker, Trent Koch, Tony Incorvati, Alan Hettinger Please read to players: This packet is slightly harder than the rest so guess accordingly. Tossups: 1. Following a 2006 win over the San Diego Chargers, this man said “I did a lot of preaching this week. I had my sermons ready. The good part is the congregation was listening.” This former cornerback recovered the fumble during the “Miracle at the Meadowlands” and he spent the vast majority of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. During his most famous press conference, this man proclaimed “you don’t quit at sports. You retire.” (*) His team then went seven and two the rest of the season and whooped Manning’s Colts 41-0 in the postseason that year. After this man was canned by the Kansas City Chiefs, he went on to giving boring opinions on ESPN. For 10 points, name this former NFL coach who famously said “You play to win the game. Hello?” during a press conference while he was coaching the New York Jets. ANSWER: Herman “Herm” Edwards 2. Xzibit is featured on a track on this album and proclaims “Until my death, I'm Bangladesh/I suggest you hold yo' breath til ain't none left”. The main artist of this album criticizes people who are mad at him for “being able to afford to provide my family with groceries” in one track. In a music video for a song on this album that features a distinctive piano section, the singers are in cars that keep bouncing on their back two wheels.
