ABSTRACT The term "Pre-Raphaelite" should not be restricted to the seven members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood or to their works. It should be widened to include those whose works were directly influ­ enced by the Brotherhood. And it may also be used legitimately to designate those whose works reflect the characteristics of Pre- Raphaelitism. For example, the original seven members of the Broth­ erhood directly influenced Christina Rossetti and William Morris, a- mong others. Their work may be called Pre-Raphaelite. Such disparate figures as Gerard Manley Hopkins, William Butler Yeats, and George Bernard Shaw never came into direct contact with the Brethren, but their work nevertheless reveals the influence of Pre-Raphaelitism. Thus it too may be called Pre-Raphaelite. The Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic is difficult to define, partly because the Brethren were individualists, not theorists. They did not restrict the meaning of Pre-Raphaelitism; they expanded it. Thus Pre-Raphaelitism is best known by its works— the characteristics and qualities of the art and poetry its members produced. The chief char­ acteristics are fidelity to nature, particularity of detail, sensuous­ ness and sensuality, religious feeling, medievalism, and pictorial and poetic qualities. Hopkins was born into a family both literary and artistic. These formative influences made him receptive to Pre-Raphaelitism. As a schoolboy he wrote prize-winning poems which revealed the influence of Tennyson and Keats— poets whose work anticipated Pre-Raphaelitism and Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. who were admired by the Brethren. At Oxford University he developed an interest in the Brotherhood and in Christina Rossetti. He met her and Holman Hunt and was encouraged to work seriously in both poetry and painting. His artwork reveals the specific influence of John Rus- kin, a close associate of the Pre-Raphaelites, as well as the influ­ ence of John Everett Millais, a member of the original Brotherhood. Hopkins transcribed a number of poems by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, a founding member of the Brotherhood, and also by his sister, Christina Rossetti. Hopkins' letters and diaries reveal admiration for other Pre-Raphaelite associates, notably William Morris, who founded the Ox­ ford Brotherhood after the model of the original group. But at Oxford Hopkins became a Roman Catholic convert on October 21, 1866. The fol­ lowing year he determined to follow a religious vocation, and on May 11, 1868, he burned his early poems, believing them in conflict with his intention to become a priest. Between then and December 1875 he wrote only two or three religious poems as called for by the occa­ sion. But in later life he began friendships with Coventry Patmore, a close associate of the original Brotherhood, and with Richard Wat­ son Dixon, a peripheral member of the Oxford Brotherhood. Thus he confirmed his lifelong interest in Pre-Raphaelitism. Hopkins' early poetry— written from 1860 to 1875— contains

This lends an ethical tendency to Realism while focusing on common actions and minor catastrophes of middle class society. Realism aims to interpret the actualities of any aspect of life, free from subjective prejudice, idealism, or romantic color. It is in direct opposition to concerns of the unusual, the basis of Romanticism. Stresses the real over the fantastic. Seeks to treat the commonplace truthfully and used characters from everyday life. This emphasis was brought on by societal changes such as the aftermath of the Civil War in the United States and the emergence of Darwin's Theory of Evolution and its effect upon biblical interpretation.

Introduction The past one hundred years have proven a hostile environment for questions of beauty and aesthetics. Philosophy has gone from a time when major figures in philosophy, including Hume, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche, devoted a considerable amount of attention to questions of aesthetics, to a discipline in which a few philosophers discuss a fragmented set of issues and questions grouped under the broad label of the philosophy of art.     Copyright © 2016 Institute for Faith and Learning at Baylor University 67 Hard Patience BY MELINDA CREECH In one of his so-called “terrible sonnets” or “sonnets of desolation,” Gerard Manley Hopkins confronts how very hard it is to ask for patience and to see the world from God’s perspective. Yet patience draws us ever closer to God and to his “delicious kindness.” uring his Long Retreat of November-December 1881-1882, Gerard Manley Hopkins copied into his spiritual writings notebook this Deighth “Rule for the Discernment of Spirits” from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola: “Let him who is in desolation strive to remain in patience, which is the virtue contrary to the troubles which harass him; and let him think that he will shortly be consoled, making diligent effort against the desolation.”1 Patience was to become a focus for Hopkins during the last eight years of his life, strained slowly out of the experiences of life and distilled from his attentive study of creation, other people, and spiritual writings. As Ignatius counseled, it was to be patience in the midst of desola- tion, and Hopkins knew a fair bit of desolation in his short forty-four years. Growing up in a well-to-do religiously pious Anglican family, Hopkins excelled at Highgate School, London, and attended Balliol College, Oxford, receiving highest honors in both his final exams, Greats and Moderns. He converted to Catholicism during his last year at Balliol and later he entered the Jesuit order. During these early years he struggled with conflicts he per- ceived between his identities as priest, professor, and poet.

    1 • Of course, their patrons, largely the middle-class themselves form different groups and each member of the PRB appealed to different types of buyers but together they created a stronger brand. In fact, they differed from a boy band as they created works that were bought independently. As well as their overall PRB brand each created an individual brand (sub-cognitive branding) that convinced the buyer they were making a wise investment. • Millais could be trusted as he was a born artist, an honest Englishman and made an ARA in 1853 and later RA (and President just before he died). • Hunt could be trusted as an investment as he was serious, had religious convictions and worked hard at everything he did. • Rossetti was a typical unreliable Romantic image of the artist so buying one of his paintings was a wise investment as you were buying the work of a ‘real artist’. 2 • The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB) had only seven members but influenced many other artists. • Those most closely associated with the PRB were Ford Madox Brown (who was seven years older), Elizabeth Siddal (who died in 1862) and Walter Deverell (who died in 1854). • Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris were about five years younger. They met at Oxford and were influenced by Rossetti.
