STAR TREK'S GEORGE TAKEI TO HEADLINE "WAR ON THE HOMEFRONT"

Japanese-American actor George Takei will join a stellar cast

of local community leaders this month at a conference on

America's domestic crises entitled "War On The Homefront. 11

Takei will deliver a keynote address, "The Japanese-American

Internment - 50 Years Later," on Wednesday, April 29, at 7 p.m.

in the Hahn University Center at the University of San Diego.

Takei, a native of Southern who is best known for

his role as Mr. Sulu on "Star Trek," spent part of his childhood (__ in World War II camps for Japanese-Americans. His

address will be free and open to the public.

"War On The Homefront" will continue Friday, May 1, at the

Hahn University Center with an 8:30 a.m. keynote address,

"Community-Based Policing: Citizens CAN Make A Difference," by

Norm Stamper, San Diego's Executive Assistant Chief of Police.

Following nine separate workshops, the conference will close

with a 3:00 p.m. wrapup session entitled "Meeting the Challenge."

All elected officials and candidates for elected office in the

San Diego area will be invited to hear ideas for citizen action

aired by conference participants.

Registration for the May 1 sessions (including lunch) is $15.

A brochure listing workshop topics and participants is attached.

Alcala Park, San Diego, California 9211 O 619/260-4682 "War on The Homefront" is co-sponsored by the USD Social

Issues Committee, the USD Asian Pacific American Law Students

Association, United Way of San Diego, San Diego City Schools, the

Ecumenical Council, and the San Diego Police Department. The

conference is funded by The James Irvine Foundation.

The sponsoring organizations together organize a regional

conference each year to focus public attention on pressing social

issues. Last year's conference, "Diversity in the Workplace,"

featured a keynote address by William Jones, former San Diego

City Councilman and founder of "Project I Believe."

"We feel that the theme of this conference is particularly

( relevant in this election year," said conference chair Mary Jo Newborn, a USD Professor of Law. "Our nation 'won' the Cold War

and the Persian Gulf War, but we seem to be losing a domestic war

against crime, violence and on our own homefront.

Citizens in San Diego are concerned about these issues and we

want to provide a forum to stimulate discussion and encourage

solutions."
