Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL) is dedicated to meeting the evolving needs of our patrons, while bridging the digital and print divide. Each of the eight library branches provides access to information, programming and events, as well as offering diverse print and digital collections.

The library system has experienced substantive growth in WiFi and computer usage, virtual branch visits and the number of adult programs—many of them led by the library’s valuable community partners. FCPL also has enjoyed growth in total circulation, the number of library visits and overall attendance in our meeting rooms. Additionally, our Summer Reading Program, aimed at curbing summer slide, showed a sharp increase in the number of participants who completed the challenge. This ensures our kids are prepared to go back to school.

Frederick is a dynamic and lively community that is an attractive place to live and raise a family, even as the population numbers increase. The library reflects this pattern of growth with its innovative collections and high standard of customer service.

The accompanying annual report provides a snapshot of our services and activities. Frederick County Public Libraries is thriving, due to your loyal and continued support. On behalf of the FCPL staff and Board of Trustees, thank you for helping FCPL position your public libraries as a trusted gathering place and informational resource.

On My Nightstand

LEIGH ADAMS Program Manager for Ausherman Family Foundation Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard by Chip and Dan Heath is actually the inspiration for the upcoming 2016 Nonprofit Summit to be held here in Frederick. The authors are brothers who write about what trips most people up when they’re trying to make a change in their personal or professional lives. The book is geared toward people who would like to become community activists. The second book is called Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. I had previously read Gone Girl by this author and loved it, so I wanted to give this one a try. The story is a little dark; it’s a mix of a mystery, along with being a psychological thriller, which keeps you guessing at ‘who did it.’ The author does such a great job of developing the characters, so all I can say for now is, ‘so far so good!’

SHEILA MCDUFF Associate Director, Frederick County Public Libraries I like to balance my reading time between books that are purely entertainment and those that inspire me at work and in my daily life. I’m a huge fan of “chick lit,” and I’ll try just about any author in this genre. I recently discovered Liane Moriarty through her newest book, Big Little Lies. Moriarty makes me laugh out loud! Right now I am reading Jenny Lawson’s newest title, Furiously Happy: A Funny Book about Horrible Things. Jenny really has a gift for comedy and I love laughing my way through her work. She’s also a vocal supporter of public libraries, which only makes me love her more! Currently, I’m rereading Simon Sinek’s, Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action. I heard Simon speak at the Public Library Association Conference in 2014, and he was amazing. This book focuses on the qualities of successful leaders, and why they are able to influence others by starting with why their company/organization exists in the first place.

REBECCA MATTHEWS MOZINGO Plexus Ambassador & Community Volunteer/Supporter I pulled Rick Warren’s 2002 book, The Purpose Driven Life back out recently, after seeing the movie Captive. It’s the story of when Ashley Smith was taken hostage in her own apartment by Brian Nichols. He’s the man that went on a shooting spree in an Atlanta courtroom in March of 2005. During part of the seven long hours they spent together, Smith read to Nichols from this book. One of the most impactful quotes that Ashley read was, “The greatest tragedy is not death, but life without purpose.” Life experiences can define us and give us hope, as defined in the following quote; “Experience is not what happens to you; it is what you do with what happens to you. Don’t waste your pain; use it to help others.” Helping others, brings me to the second book that I’ve been reading and rereading for months. It’s Eric Worre’s, Go Pro. It’s an amazing piece of writing directed toward ‘network marketing,’ but it can apply to all walks of life. The references to creating connections, developing relationships and building a team are so much more than ‘business.’ Both books are inspiring, uplifting and very meaningful and may help you find more purpose.
