For Bloggers Seeking Name Recognition, Nothing Beats a Good Scandal - New York Ti... Page 1 of 2 October 31, 2005 For Bloggers Seeking Name Recognition, Nothing Beats a Good Scandal By TOM ZELLER Jr. It's a fair bet that, given a political scandal of a certain scale, the usual blogs - DailyKos, AmericaBlog, Instapundit and Wonkette - will draw traffic and links. Make it a media scandal, like Dan Rather's "60 Minutes" fiasco or Jayson Blair's fabrications at The New York Times, and other sites might bubble to the top: Romenesko or perhaps Gawker for a snideways view of things. And why not? As in any other medium, branding matters, and these sites have proven their mettle in scandals past. But the blogosphere is expanding at a rate of 70,000 sites a day, according to Technorati, the blog search portal, which now tracks activity on more than 20 million blogs in real time - and the right bit of news can always catapult new sites into the limelight. Ariana Huffington's relentless drubbing of Judith Miller, the New York Times reporter, drove the relatively new HuffingtonPost.com high into Technorati's rankings. Her site's popularity continued right through Friday's indictment of I. Lewis Libby, the White House staff member accused of making false statements during an investigation into the leak of a Central Intelligence Agency operative's name. At day's end, roughly 20 new links per hour were being made to HuffingtonPost.com. "I would say that's a pretty significant blogometric pressure," said David L.

  • FANAC Fan History Project UPDATE 12
FANAC Fan History Project UPDATE 12 April 17, 2020 Greetings and felicitations. I hope this update finds you all well – we are in living in surreal and frightening times. For us, wallowing in fan history is not only a passion but a good way to focus on something other than the pandemic news. Apparently, others feel the same way. We’ve had a number of scans from new contributors, as well as our stalwarts. In particular, new material has been provided by Rich Lynch, Sheryl Birkhead, Joe Patrizio, Mike Saler, Syd Weinstein and Tom Whitmore. CoNZealand Retro Hugo Awards nominations: We’ve completed our work on the Retro Hugos for 2020. Final nominees were announced recently by CoNZealand, and we’ve assembled a page of links for the fannish material nominated in the categories of Best Related Work, Best Fanzine and Best Fan Writer. Our webmaster, Edie Stern, combed through all the 1944 fan publications available on the net to make the list as complete as possible. We want to thank CoNZealand, Steve Davidson (Amazing Stories), Mike Glyer (File 770), Dave Langford (Ansible), Andrew Porter (news lists) and Locus for promoting and linking to our effort. You can access the material at http://fanac.org/fanzines/Retro_Hugos.html . FANAC by the Numbers. We have passed what feel to us like some significant milestones in our archiving - over 10,000 fanzine issues and over 150,000 pages scanned. That’s not counting pages in some of our largest runs like Opuntia, MT Void and TNFF. It does include over 3,000 newszines.

Pulp-related books and periodicals available from Mike Chomko for May and June 2019 Dianne and I had a wonderful time in Chicago, attending the Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention in April. It’s a fine show that you should try to attend. Upcoming conventions include Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas on June 7 – 8, and the Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship, planned for the weekend of June 13 – 15. It will take place in Oakbrook, Illinois. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there will be a spring edition of Ray Walsh’s Classicon. Currently, William Patrick Maynard and I are writing about the programming that will be featured at PulpFest 2019. We’ll be posting about the panels and presentations through June 10. On June 17, we’ll write about this year’s author signings, something new we’re planning for the convention. Check things out at www.pulpfest.com. Laurie Powers biography of LOVE STORY MAGAZINE editor Daisy Bacon is currently scheduled for release around the end of 2019. I will be carrying this book. It’s entitled QUEEN OF THE PULPS. Please reserve your copy today. Recently, I was contacted about carrying the Armchair Fiction line of books. I’ve contacted the publisher and will certainly be able to stock their books. Founded in 2011, they are dedicated to the restoration of classic genre fiction. Their forté is early science fiction, but they also publish mystery, horror, and westerns. They have a strong line of lost race novels. Their books are illustrated with art from the pulps and such.

I’m sure you have already discovered, as I have, that this event is truly a unique amalgamation of all the things that made Star Trek a phenomenon. My own small contribution to this legendary story has continued to be a source of great pride to me during my career, and although I have been fortunate enough to have many other projects to satisfy the artist in me, I have nevertheless always felt a deep and visceral connection to the show. But there are reasons why this never- ending story has endured. I have always believed that this special connection to Star Trek we all enjoy comes from the positive picture the stories consistently envision.

  • Trekonderoga 2018
Special Guests Karl Urban Original Star Trek series fan and New Zealand-born actor Karl Urban actively pursued and won the role of Dr. Leonard McCoy on 2009’s motion picture named, appropriately enough, Star Trek. In his portrayal, Karl evoked many of the subtle mannerisms and vocalisms made famous by one DeForest Kelley of an earlier era – one could consider his performance as an ultimate fan tribute. Karl was interested in acting from a very early age, debuting at age 8 in the New Zealand television series Pioneer Woman. Internationally he appeared in both Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and its spin-off Xena: Warrior Princess, playing recurring roles in both American/New Zealand series. He eventually started working on Hollywood productions and in relatively no time was in big productions such as The Lord of the Rings, The Bourne Supremacy, The Chronicles of Riddick, and Doom. Hollywood press has speculated that he could have landed the role of “James Bond” had not previous film commitments gotten in the way (the role went to Daniel Craig). Other films he appeared in include Red, Dredd, The Loft, Pete’s Dragon, while Karl most recently appeared as “Skurge” in 2016’s Thor: Ragnarok. Karl is active on the convention circuit and makes his first bombshell appearance at this year’s edition of Trekonderoga! Be sure not to miss your opportunity to meet Karl onboard the original Enterprise – where else but in Sickbay, naturally – in a time-defying trip back to the original series sets with today’s Dr. McCoy! Appears Saturday & Sunday only Gates McFadden Not many Enterprise-D characters could call their Captain by his first name, but Doctor Beverly Crusher, memorably played by Gates McFadden, certainly could – and did.
