FAREWELL TEA-PARTY FOR It seems a little sad to see the summer months as simply a hiatus from the normal routine, and yet the DR ANGELA ROWE pleasure of having morning coffee in the garden or a barbecue in the evening are, in our climate, fleeting pleasures. Please join us for a farewell tea party for The harvest and winter festivals of Christmas were in part designed to lighten the darker days and give us Dr Angela Rowe an opportunity to celebrate. But we’re not quite there To be held in the Pavilion, yet. Let’s hang on to the joy of summer a little longer Woodcote Village Hall on if we can. Foreward by the editor: And now David Sutton returns with another inimitable piece; this time, he gives us food for thought as he ponders modern day ‘democracy’.

TWO CHEERS FOR DEMOCRACY! Today in the House, the Chancellor stood up to deliver his autumn statement. He was very sorry, he said, but he had made a complete pig’s breakfast of the economy and the country was now bankrupt. He blamed the zeroes. You know how it is: you do your sums to see how much you’ve got to spend, and it doesn’t seem enough, so you stick a nought or two on the end thinking well, they’re only zeroes, what difference can they make, and suddenly the sums look so much better and it means that every home can have superfast broadband and its own policeman, and Boris, who had said ‘don’t worry, he knew where there

was a Magic Money-Tree’, was going to be really pleased with him… At this point he broke down in uncontrollable sobbing.

The Shadow Chancellor stood up to comfort him. ‘There, there, he mustn’t take on so. Being Chancellor was a jolly difficult job’, he said, and he wasn’t at all sure that he could have done any better himself. His own party had had trouble with those pesky zeroes, slippery little b’s. In fact after his lot had been kicked out last time round, it had been necessary to leave a note saying ‘There’s no money!’. But he would now give way to the Leader of the Opposition, who would also like to say a few words.

Mr C. said that he wholeheartedly concurred with the

sentiments of the previous Honourable Member. This was no time for recriminations. In this national crisis we must set aside party differences and stand together. Accordingly he would be calling for a vote of confidence in the Government and giving an assurance that his party would be honouring its election pledge by doing all it could to help the Government deliver Brexit.

At this point voices were heard from his own side. ‘No, no, Jeremy, that was last week. We’re Remainers now’. ‘Well, I do think someone might have told me. OK, better make that a vote of no confidence. Oh dear, does that mean a General Election? Gosh, I do hope we don’t win. The last thing I want to have to do is sort out this mess…’ Democracy. And it’s still better than all the other systems that have been tried… BONNER LOCKSMITHS David Sutton

HARVEST TIME (BEE-STYLE)!

Every beekeeper enjoys this time of year, as it’s time for the honey harvest. We have had another busy year collecting swarms and building up our colonies after losing them all after a double dose of the Beast from the East last year. However, it’s all worth it when the honey starts to flow from the extractor! The bees have worked hard again, with the queen laying over a thousand eggs a day.

The workers (all girls) collect nectar and evaporate off the water to make the honey we love, and the drones (boys) laze about or fly off to chase a queen in the afternoons. The beekeepers of course have to take care not to be greedy and must leave enough honey for the bees to survive the winter.

The South Chilterns Beekeepers’ Association (SCBKA), currently has members in an area of the South Chilterns bounded by the Thames to the South and AUTUMN GIFT FAIR the M40 to the North. We In aid of Newbury Riding for the Disabled are a well-established group of beekeepers who are interested in the THURSDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER 2019 promotion of good bee keeping and the 9.30am - 4.00pm preservation of the honey bee.
