The late 19th and early 20th century saw several pioneering works by historians who aimed to shift the spotlight from matters of political and religious history towards a better understanding of the countryside (eg Seebohm 1883; Vinogradoff 1892; Maitland 1897). The work of Gray (1915) built on these early studies by emphasising the considerable evidence of regional variation in landscape character. By the 1950s, interest in the medieval rural landscape, and particularly of the medieval village, was accelerating, with research by Beresford (1954) and W G Hoskins (1955) amongst the most prominent. The emerging knowledge base was now becoming founded on archaeological research and this was increasingly complemented by architectural (eg Long 1938–1941; Faulkner 1958; Currie 1992) and place/field-name studies (Gelling 1954; 1976; Bond 1982; Faith 1998) which added further detail and context to understanding of medieval settlements. Broader appreciation of the wider landscape, in terms of how it was used, organised and perceived by its medieval inhabitants have also been examined from the perspective of the elite (eg Creighton 2009; Langton 2010) and increasingly from the point of view of the peasant (eg Faith 1997; Dyer 2014).

The volume as a whole will cover Caversham, Checkendon, Crowmarsh Gifford, Eye and Dunsden, Goring, Ipsden, Mapledurham, Mongewell, Newnham Murren, North Stoke, Shiplake, and Whitchurch. Maps and illustrations in the final version will differ. ___________________________________________________________________ The twelve ancient parishes covered in this volume lie within a loop of the river Thames in the county’s south-east corner, straddling the Chiltern hills’ south-west end, and all formerly bordering Berkshire.1 Most formed long thin ‘strip’ parishes stretching from the river into the hills, encompassing scattered upland settlement and wood pasture as well as nucleated riverside villages – the site, in most cases, of the parish church. Though long interconnected, the hills and the vale still form distinct landscape zones, albeit now with some denser centres of upland settlement compared with earlier. Neighbouring riverside towns – Wallingford to the north-west, Reading to the south, and Henley-on-Thames to the north-east – exerted important influences from the Middle Ages, as did London some 40–50 miles to the east. The economy was predominantly agricultural until the 20th century, with woodland and woodland crafts playing a significant role, and local industry including small-scale brickmaking and quarrying alongside the usual rural trades. Gentrification gained momentum from the mid 19th century, accelerated by the arrival of the railway from 1840 and especially affecting the area’s attractive riverside villages, which saw extensive new building by wealthy incomers.

    Agenda Item 4 Division(s): N/A TRANSPORT DECISIONS COMMITTEE - 11 FEBRUARY 2010 COUNTY SPEED LIMIT REVIEW Report by Head of Transport Introduction 1. The Department for Transport’s (DfT) advice (Circular 01/06) on the setting of local speed limits has requested that highway authorities review current speed limits on their A and B road network in the light of the advice and implement any changes judged necessary by 2011. 2. The County’s road safety team together with the input of the Speed Reference Group identified draft recommendations for changes to speed limits, both up and down, on the network. 3. The result of informal consultation with the Police, parish councils and neighbouring authorities (where the limit meets the county boundary) were reported to this Committee in October with a recommendation to proceed to formal consultation on schemes listed in Annex 3 to that report. 4. Formal consultation has been carried out on these schemes with the emergency services; town and parish councils, neighbouring local authorities (where appropriate) and stakeholder groups together with a notice in the local newspaper and site notices. 5. Objections to some of the draft speed limit orders have been received. 6. This report details objections received, officer comments and seeks a decision on how to proceed with each speed limit order. Consultation 7. Formal consultation was carried out on some 64 sites where draft speed limit orders were proposed. 8. Objections have been received on some of the sites. These are tabulated in Annex 1 together with officer comments and a recommendation on how to proceed.
