Ferrocarriles en el Perú: ¿Qué tan importantes fueron? Luis Felipe Zegarra* Abstract This paper analyzes the evolution and main features of the railway system of Peru in the 19th and early 20th centuries. From mid-19th century railroads were considered a promise for achieving progress. Several railroads were then built in Peru, especially in 1850-75 and in 1910-30. With the construction of railroads, Peruvians saved time in travelling and carrying freight. The faster service of railroads did not necessarily come at the cost of higher passenger fares and freight rates. Fares and rates were lower for railroads than for mules, especially for long distances. However, for some routes (especially for short distances with many curves), the traditional system of llamas remained as the lowest pecuniary cost (but also slowest) mode of transportation. Key words: Transportation, railroads, Peru, Latin America. JEL classification: N70, N76, R40. * Luis Felipe Zegarra is PhD in Economics of University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

Forms and Functions of Negation in Huaraz Quechua (Ancash, Peru): Analyzing the Interplay of Common Knowledge and Sociocultural Settings Dissertation zur Erlangung des Grades eines Doktors der Philosophie am Fachbereich Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaften der Freien Universität Berlin vorgelegt von Cristina Villari aus Verona (Italien) Berlin 2017 1. Gutachter: Prof. Dr. Michael Dürr 2. Gutachterin: Prof. Dr. Ingrid Kummels Tag der Disputation: 18.07.2017 To Ani and Leonel III Acknowledgements I wish to thank my teachers, colleagues and friends who have provided guidance, comments and encouragement through this process. I gratefully acknowledge the support received for this project from the Stiftung Lateinamerikanische Literatur. Many thanks go to my first supervisor Prof. Michael Dürr for his constructive comments and suggestions at every stage of this work. Many of his questions led to findings presented here. I am indebted to him for his precious counsel and detailed review of my drafts. Many thanks also go to my second supervisor Prof. Ingrid Kummels. She introduced me to the world of cultural anthropology during the doctoral colloquium at the Latin American Institute at the Free University of Berlin. The feedback she and my colleagues provided was instrumental in composing the sociolinguistic part of this work. I owe enormous gratitude to Leonel Menacho López and Anita Julca de Menacho. In fact, this project would not have been possible without their invaluable advice. During these years of research they have been more than consultants; Quechua teachers, comrades, guides and friends. With Leonel I have discussed most of the examples presented in this dissertation. It is only thanks to his contributions that I was able to explain nuances of meanings and the cultural background of the different expressions presented.

  • In Search of the Great Wall of Peru
IN SEARCH OF THE GREAT WALL OF PERU Donald A. Proulx Professor of Anthropology, Emeritus University of Massachusetts Introduction and Summary of the Expedition In 1934, while undergraduate students at Yale and Harvard Universities respectively, Richard James Cross (1915-2003) and his friend Cornelius Van Schaak Roosevelt, (1915-1991) made a trip together to Peru. Their junket seems to have been motivated by Roosevelt’s reading an article about the Shippee-Johnson Peruvian Expedition of 1931 during which an ancient stone wall was discovered in the Santa Valley while taking aerial photographs of the Peruvian coast (Shippee 1932). Once in Peru Roosevelt and Cross contacted the eminent Peruvian archaeologist Julio C. Tello, who was planning a trip to the north coast and the Callejon de Huaylas in the mountains (Fig. 1). He generously invited the two young men to accompany him as his photographers. The team traveled from Lima up the coast stopping first at Huacho [in the Huaura Valley] and on to Paramonga, Fortaleza, and then Huarmay where they photographed a newly excavated ancient drum. Stopping in the Casma valley, they visited the ruins of Chanquillo (which Tello had visited but not photographed) and the adjacent 13 structures. It appears that they may also have photographed the Chimú administrative center of Manchan (see Roosevelt 1935: Fig. 6). They continued on to the Santa Valley where they investigated the “great wall” and traced its beginnings near to the coast. In Santa they also investigated several cemeteries, an ancient irrigation system and various ruins including a “fortress.” After spending several days in the Santa Valley, they took the train from Chimbote up the Santa Valley to its terminus at Huallanca and then by truck to Caraz where they photographed some monoliths in 1 private collections.

  • Peru: an Andean Country with Significant Disaster and Emergency Management Challenges
Peru: An Andean Country with Significant Disaster and Emergency Management Challenges Heriberto Urby, Jr., J.D., Ph.D.1 David A. McEntire, Ph.D.2 Ekong J. Peters3 Introduction Peru is a poor, developing country in South America. Like so many other countries in the world, Peru has experienced its share of increasing and more intense disasters. Its emergency management system, while making progress in the past few years, remains weak in certain respects and in need of more proactive measures. In particular, the government and the emergency managers in this country need to continue to develop more effective approaches to implementation of the phases of emergency management (e.g., mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery). This paper discusses Peru‘s disaster context; embarks on a short discussion of the vulnerability in this country; delineates the extreme past disasters experienced by her people; notes Peru‘s emergency management organization and laws, challenges and successes; and elaborates upon the lessons that have been learned as a result of studying Peru‘s emergency management system. The Peruvian Context Peru is located in South America and borders Chili to the south, Ecuador to the north, and Colombia, Brazil and Bolivia to the east. Its geography, climate, and people are diverse and somewhat unique. Peru‘s terrain includes relatively flat coastal areas, steep mountains in the central part of the country (rising to 5,000 meters or 16,400 feet in height in some cases), and rain forests in the east. The coastal areas are considered to be desert (particularly in the southern portion of the nation), while the central and eastern parts receive large amounts of rainfall.
