Handout 1: The history of the English language Cold climate: they had a word for snow: *sneigwh- (cf. Latin nix, Greek Seminar English Historical Linguistics and Dialectology, Andrew McIntyre niphos, Gothic snaiws, Gaelic sneachta). Words for beech, birch, elm, ash, oak, apple, cherry; bee, bear, beaver, eagle. 1. Proto-Indo-European (roughly 3500-2500 BC) Original location is also deduced from subsequent spread of IE languages. I would like to mention that after uncovering an error in the set- up of the atmosphere-only configuration of UKESM1, the piClim simulations of UKESM1-0-LL were redone and uploaded on ESGF (O'Connor, 2019a,b). Hence all ensemble calculations and Figures were redone using the new UKESM1-0-LL simulations. Furthermore, a new co-author (Konstantinos Tsigaridis), who has contributed in the simulations of GISS-E2-1-G used in this work, was added in the manuscript. Husserl's Phenomenological Reduction Revisited
HUSSERL’S PHENOMENOLOGICAL REDUCTION REVISITED: AN ATTEMPT OF A RENEWED ACCOUNT SEBASTIAN L UFT This essay attempts a renewed, critical exposition of Husserl’s theory of the phenomenological reduction, incorporating manuscript material that has been published since the defining essays of the first generation of Husserl research. The discussion focuses on points that remain especially crucial, i. e. the concept of the natural attitude, the ways into the reduction, and the question of the “meaning of the reduction”. The reading attempted here leads to two, not necessarily related, focal points: a Cartesian and a Life-world tendency. In following these two paths, Husserl was consistent in pursuing two evident leads in his philosophical enterprise; however, he was at the same time unable to systematically unify these two strands. Thus, I am offering an interpretation which might be called a modified “departure from Cartesianism” reading that Landgrebe proposed in his famous essay from the nineteen-fifties (a reading that is still valid in many contemporary expositions of Husserl’s thought). This discussion should make apparent that Husserl’s theory of the phenome- nological reduction deserves a renewed look in light of material that has since appeared in the Husserliana and by incorporating the most important results of recent tendencies in Husserl research INTRODUCTION An author attempting an account of Husserl’s method of the phenomenological reduction finds himself in an ungratified position. Bibliography………………………………………………………40 CEU eTD Collection 3 Abstract Ι will attempt to shed some light on the troubling matter of the obscure particulars ― treated by Aristotle in Meteorology ― (τῶν ἀφανῶν τῇ αἰσθήσει), that is, phenomena which are not apparent to the senses in their full extent (Meteorology 344a5). In the framework of the present paper, the aim is to highlight the use of κατά τόν λόγον which appears in the first lines of chapter I.7 of Aristotle’s Meteorology, by focusing on two philosophical questions: one ontological (what is the ontological status of obscure phenomena?) and one epistemological (can we come to the knowledge of such phenomena, and if so, in which way?). Aristotle proposes two answers to these questions in the text, respectively: The meteora (and therefore the comets discussed in chapter I.7 of Meteorology) are natural entities. -

ABSTRACT The frontal concept, as developed by the Norwegian Meteorologists, is the foundation of modern synoptic mete- orology. The Norwegian theory, when presented, was rapidly accepted by the world's meteorologists, even though its several precursors had been rejected or Ignored. -

Haley Cica 14 September 2009 Willard Clark Intro into Integrated Science Nicholas Scaturo Paper 1 The History of Weather Prediction The article “ The origins of computer weather prediction and climate modeling” by Peter Lynch is about all of the different people who made possible the current understanding of the world weather and the ability to predict it by making giant leaps in both mathematics, hydrodynamics, and computer technology. No one man could have made this possible; it took the life’s work of many different men to make weather prediction and understanding a reality. It all started with the development of thermodynamics and hydrodynamics. Then came three men who might be considered the founding fathers of weather prediction, these men were Cleveland Abbe, Vilhelm Bjerknes, and Lewis Fry Richardson. In 1901 Cleveland Abbe wrote a paper titled “ The physical basis of long-range weather forecasting” which proposed using mathematics to predict weather. Not long after, Vilhelm Bjerknes, a Norwegian scientist introduced a plan to predict weather which included two steps: To observe the atmosphere, then calculate movement using the laws of motion. In 1922, while working at the Meteorological Office in, Lewis Fry Richardson wrote a book titled “ Weather Prediction by Numerical Process” where he criticized the then current practice of using an “ Index of Weather Maps” to predict weather by finding a previous map that resembled your current map and deducing that the weather will act in a similar manner. This method was of course highly inaccurate as Richardson points out. He then laid out a forecasting scheme which was based on Bjerknes’ program and involved an unimaginable volume of numerical computation which he realized would be practically impossible without computers. -

GLOSSARY Chapter 1 Aerosols Tiny suspended solid particles (dust, smoke, etc.) or liquid droplets that enter the atmosphere from either natural or human (anthropogenic) sources, such as the burning of fossil fuels. Sulfur-containing fossil fuels, such as coal, produce sulfate aerosols. Air density The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume occupied by it. Air density is usually expressed as g/cm3 or kg/m3. Also See Density. Air pressure The pressure exerted by the mass of air above a given point, usually expressed in millibars (mb), inches of (atmospheric mercury (Hg) or in hectopascals (hPa). pressure) Atmosphere The envelope of gases that surround a planet and are held to it by the planet's gravitational attraction. The earth's atmosphere is mainly nitrogen and oxygen. Carbon dioxide (CO2) A colorless, odorless gas whose concentration is about 0.039 percent (390 ppm) in a volume of air near sea level. It is a selective absorber of infrared radiation and, consequently, it is important in the earth's atmospheric greenhouse effect. Solid CO2 is called dry ice. Climate The accumulation of daily and seasonal weather events over a long period of time. Front The transition zone between two distinct air masses. Hurricane A tropical cyclone having winds in excess of 64 knots (74 mi/hr). Ionosphere An electrified region of the upper atmosphere where fairly large concentrations of ions and free electrons exist. Lapse rate The rate at which an atmospheric variable (usually temperature) decreases with height. (See Environmental lapse rate.) Mesosphere The atmospheric layer between the stratosphere and the thermosphere.
