We hope and wish that the publication will be a function of information and better coordination of activities between the ATRC and other non-governmental organizations in Kosovo. THE ADVOCATE Faqe4 ATRC and PILPG organize the conference “Justice and the People” On June 30, 2011 the first conference was organized within the jointcampaign by ATRC and PILPG called "Justice and the People: Strengthening the rule of law in Kosovo" and aimed to bring together NGOs, civil society groups, and grassroots leaders interested in greater access to jus- tice and to reform aspects of the justice system. Participants included experts from various segments of society in Kosovo, and some of the main purposes of the discus- sion were: to generate insights and recommendations for improving the current legal system, an examination of ways to en- courage citizens of Kosovo to take initiative for improving the justice system, to advo- cate for needed reforms, to analyze the general perceptions of the justice system, and to identi- fy ways to empower citizens and civil soci- ety. Inputs provided by participants of the roundtable provided an overview of the important problems in the fields of justice system reform, access to justice, etc.. This conference represents only the first of many future events that are de- signed to promote this campaign. ATRC train the staff

ERMOLIN Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) Russian Academy of Sciences Summary The paper is devoted to studying current strategies in the transformation of cultural landscape in postwar Kosovo. I regard cultural landscape, i.e. a piece of Earth’s surface deliberately shaped by man, as an extension of the so-called socially constructed reality (Berger and Luckmann, 1966). In some cases this symbolization is a strategic part of a nation-building project, or just a way to declare one’s own presence, identity, or affiliation. The creation of new heroes is one of the initial steps within the strategies of a nation-building process, as it forms an essential prerequisite for the feeling of a common and shared history. This article analyses the spectrum of personalities symbolically wel- comed in Kosovo since the 1990s. The Republic of Kosovo is de jure a multi- ethnic society consisting of Albanian, Serbian, and other communities, and is presented as such to the international community. However, the current strate- gies of symbolic nation-building deeply contradict the declared aspirations to build a common state and national identity among all of the peoples living in Kosovo. My aim is to negotiate the strategies of memorialization in postwar Kosovo with a focus on this balancing between civic (as desired) and ethnic (as de facto realized) models of nation-building.

At the time Kosova was part of the Yugoslav Kingdom, therefore the new invading forces occupied Kosova and later divided the territory into three demarcation zones: the German, the Italian and the Bulgarian zone. The paper analyses the beginning of the conflict among various occupying forces and their collaborators against the partisan units, and those who fought for the liberation of Kosova and for a solution to the Albanian case. The most prominent event of this period is arguably the Conference of Bujan, held on December 31st 1943 until January 2nd 1944, where the Albanian people expressed their will for Kosova to unify with Albania proper after the war. I lived in Peja until ’99, right, until the bombings took place. I don’t know what to say about my childhood. I finished elementary and high school in Peja. I went to high school exactly at the time, I mean, during the war, so we didn’t quite go to school in the last semester, but… But, besides this, all that I remember is only the apartment in which we lived. We had lived in another apartment before that, but I don’t remember it because it was when I was very little. I remember the apartment on the Muharrem Bekteshi Street, I don’t know how the street is called today but I know that it is located near Ramiz Sadiku School. This is how it was called before I left, then it was renamed after Desanka Maksimović.
