CHAPTER I PREPARATIONS BEFORE COMING TO CHINA

1 Guidance for New Students toTianjin University 1. VISA APPLICATION (1). Introduction to the Student Visa

Please be sure to apply for student visa (X visa) in order to study in China. The X Visa is classified into X1 and X2 Visa, X1 Visa is a long term convertible visa which must be converted to residence permit within 30 days of entry; X2 Visa is a short term non-convertible visa issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of no more than 180 days and are only entitled to one round trip within the specified period of study. Therefore, if you plan to study in China for a period of more than 180 days, you need to apply for the X1 visa (Residence permit); if you plan to study for a period of no more than 180 days, you need to apply for the X2 visa.

(2). Requirements for Visa Application

Please apply at the Chinese embassy in your home country with the following materials:

a. Original and photocopy of International Passport (please ensure that your International passport is valid for more than 6 months and has a blank visa page);

b. Original and photocopy of the Admission Notice issued by Tianjin University;

c. Original and photocopy of "Visa Application Form for Study in China" (Form JW201 or Form JW202). Form JW201 is for scholarship students and Form JW202 is for self-paid students.

2. WHAT TO BRING (1). Materials Required for Registration

a. Original and photocopy of valid Passport and Visa (X1 or X2);

b. Original and photocopy of the Admission Notice;

c. Original copy of the “Visa Application Form for Study in China” (Form JW201 or JW202);

d. Original and photocopy of highest degree certificate;

e. 10 passport size photos;

f. Registration fee, tuition, medical insurance fee, accommodation fee and other required fees;

g. Original copy of “Foreigners’ Physical Examination Report” and blood test report (for students who plan to study in China for a period of more than 6 months).

In addition to the materials to be submitted for registration, we recommend that you bring some other necessary items when you coming to China, for example:

Electronics and Electrical Appliances: Laptop and accessories, change-over plug, transformer, and mobile power supply etc. (The standard electrical voltage in China is 220V, and the standard socket is as shown in the picture below).

Bedding: Bed sheets, quilt cover, pillow case, blanket.

Toiletries: slippers, bath towel, towel, toothbrush, toothpaste.

Clothing: Spring/Summer (Maximum temperature in summer is 350c): Shirts, Shorts, Skirts, Jackets, Sandals, Sun hats, Sunglasses, etc. Autumn/Winter (Minimum temperature in winter is -100c): Down jacket, overcoat, sweater, cardigan, thick pants, cotton-padded shoes, gloves, scarf, etc.

Medicines: Medicine to treat respiratory and digestive problems, Painkillers, Anti-inflammatory drugs, mosquito repellent, Body lotion, etc. Other electrical appliances and daily necessities can be bought in stores within Tianjin University campus or nearby.

Suggestion: Daily necessities can be bought in Tianjin. If your budget is limited, you can opt for second hand items.

Money: We strongly recommend that you make a budget of about 5000RMB to cover your living expenses (allowance, accommodation, food and transportation) for a month in Tianjin. Even if you are a scholarship student (Chinese Government scholarship, MOFCOM Scholarship, Confucius Institute scholarship, Tianjin Municipal Government Scholarship, Tianjin University Scholarship) and are subsidized by living allowance, we still recommend that you take some money for the first month, as scholarship is usually released after one month.

The official currency of China is Renminbi (¥). The main unit is RMB and auxiliary units are jiao and fen. 1 RMB = 10 jiao, 1 jiao = 10 fen. Presently, the major paper currency in circulation are: 1 jiao, 5 jiao, 1 RMB, 5 RMB, 10 RMB, 20 RMB, 50 RMB, 100 RMB; coins include: 1 jiao, 5 jiao and 1 RMB.

• The following foreign currencies can be directly converted to Renminbi (RMB): British Pound (GBP), American Dollar (USD), Euro (EUR), Japanese Yen (JPY), South Korean Won (KRW), Canadian Dollar (CAD), Australian Dollar (AUD), Swiss Franc (CHF), Singapore Dollar (SGD), Swedish Krona (SEK), Norwegian Krone (NOK), Danish Krone (DKK), Philippine Peso (PHP), and Thai Baht (THB). Other currencies can be converted into dollar first in your home countries prior to coming to China, and then converted to RMB in China.

(3). Withdrawal Limits of Bank Accounts

You need to open an account in any of the banks within China and apply for the bank card. Cash withdrawal in RMB can be made over the counter of the issuing bank or any nearby ATM machines. Please note that the banks have a daily limit on withdrawals made by debit or credit cards. Generally, ATM cash withdrawals are limited to an accumulated sum of RMB 20,000 per day, and credit card overdraft is limited to RMB 2000 per day or 5000RMB per day in some specific banks. You can consult the issuing bank for detailed information.

(4). Wire Transfer Services

Your friends and relatives abroad can remit money to your bank account in Tianjin through wire transfer services. The transfer procedures are as follows: You need to open an account in Bank of China (or other banks) and provide your account name, account number, the English name of issuing bank, and wire transfer routing number to the remitter who will initiate the wire transfer. Once the money is received by your bank in China, it will be directly deposited into your bank account.

4. ACCOMMODATION (1). Check-in Time

Tianjin University Dormitory is open to international students 3 days prior to the date of registration. Therefore, students are advised to arrive on time for the necessary registration procedures.

(2). On-Campus Accommodation

There are dormitories for international students at both campuses of Tianjin University (Weijin Road Campus and Peiyang Park Campus). Accommodation is arranged according to the campus where your Faculty is located (refer to Chapter III 13(2) for details).

(4). Questions and Answers about Accommodation (Q&A)

Q1: Can I check into the school dormitory in advance? A1: You can check in 3 days prior to the date of registration. Q2: What are the standard fees of school accommodation? A2: School accommodation is charged monthly and standard fee is set by Tianjin University. Liuyuan (Double Room) at Weijin Road Campus: RMB1550/ /bed/month; Youyuan (Single room) at Weijin Road Campus: RMB1860 /bed/month; Liuyuan A (Single room), Peiyang Park Campus: RMB1240 /bed/month. Q3: Are students allowed to live off campus? A3: Yes, but students should apply for living off campus after living in dormitory for at least 2 month. a. Airport - Weijin Road Campus

You can take the Inter-city Bus directly from Beijing Airport to Tianjin, with a bus fare of RMB82 / person, and get off at Tianhuan Passenger Station, Tianjin. The trip takes about 2.5 hours. After getting off, take Bus No. 45, 50 or 681 and get off at Tianjin University Dormitory Station. Walk 100 meters and then you will get to Tianjin University (Weijin Road Campus). You can also take a taxi from Tianjin Tianhuan Passenger Station to Weijin Road Campus, which will cost you about RMB10-15.

Tianjin East Railway Station: you can take Bus No. 50, 638 or 650 from Tianjin East Railway Station and get off at Tianjin University Dormitory Station, or take the Subway Line 3 and get off at Xikang Road Station.

Tianjin West Railway Station: You can take the Subway from Tianjin West Railway Station and get off at Yingkou Road Station, then transfer to Subway Line 3 and get off at Xikang Road Station.

Tianjin South Railway Station: You can take the Subway Line 3 from Tianjin South Railway Station and get off at Xikang Road Station. Besides, you can also take a taxi directly from the Railway Stations to Weijin Road Campus.

(2). How to Get to Peiyang Park Campus?

If you want to get to Peiyang Park Campus, you can get to Weijin Road Campus first, and then take Bus No. 615 to get to Peiyang Park Campus directly, with a fare of RMB3-5 /person. The first bus departs at 6:30 am and the last bus departs at 20:30. Bus No. 615 is the bus route specially designed for direct transit between the both campuses. Qilitai Station (near the East Gate of Weijin Road campus), Tianjin University Dormitory Station (near the North Gate of Weijin Road campus) and Nanfeng Road Station (near the West Gate of Weijin Road Campus) are 3 main stations of Bus No. 615 around Weijin Road Campus.

You can also take a taxi directly from the Airport or Railway Stations to Peiyang Park Campus.

6. ARRIVAL AND SETTLEMENT

The registration venue is at Weijin Road Campus (refer to Chapter III 7(1) for details). If you arrive for registration within the stipulated time, then you can directly go to the designated venue to complete your registration. If you are unable to arrive within the specified time, or you arrive off working hours, then you can directly go to the dormitory and check in first, then go to the School of International Education, Tianjin University (No.10 Teaching building, Weijin Road Campus) to complete the registration process.

a. How to Register.

• You are required to complete the registration process within the time specified in the admission notice. If you are unable to register within the stipulated time, you need to seek approval from the school by sending a written application via fax or email 15 days before the registration date to International Admissions office, stating your reasons. Otherwise, it will be considered as a waiver of admission. Contact email: [email protected], Fax: 0086-22-27406147. Meanwhile, you also need to send a written application by email to the Office of International Academic Affairs for asking for a leave. Contact email: [email protected]

• Registration procedures must be completed in person. • Registration fee, tuition, medical insurance and other required fees must be paid before or on the date of registration; otherwise, you will be unable to complete the registration procedures.

• Confirm Personal information: please provide a valid passport and submit a photocopy of the passport;

• Reporting: Please show your admission notice and visa application form;

• Payment: Please pay the tuition fee and registration fee (Chinese Government Scholarship, MOFCOM Scholarship, Confucius Institute Scholarship students should ignore this);

b. Payment Methods

All fees should be paid in full. Tuition and registration fee can be paid in cash or by bank card (only Union Pay card, Visa card, or Master card can be used). Other fees such as medical insurance fee, textbooks fee, etc. can only be paid in cash. Please note that there is a charge on transaction, which should be undertaken by the card holder.

(3). Purchase of Medical Insurance

If you plan to study in China for more than 6 months, you need to buy comprehensive insurance in China. Other insurances will not be accepted for registration or application for residence permit. If you do not buy the comprehensive insurance, you will not be allowed to complete registration.

• Compensation Amount

If you incur expenses on outpatient or emergency treatment, the insurance company will cover 85% of the accumulated payment which is above RMB 650 for scholarship students and RMB 2000 for self-paid students. Daily limit is RMB 600 (daily limit refers to amount incurred on the same day, in same hospital and in the same hospital department), the compensation amount is limited to an accumulated sum of RMB 20000.

a. Physical Examination Instructions

According to the laws and regulations of the Chinese government, students with X2 visa do not need to take physical examination, but students with X1 visas must take. You can take the physical examination in your home country before coming to China and submit the original copy of the “Foreigners’ Physical Examination Report” (Chinese or English) on the date of registration. The report must be verified at the Health Center, Tianjin Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (a 2x2 passport photo is needed). After verification, you will be issued a “Proof of Foreigners’ Physical Examination Report”. However, if the report is disqualified, you will need to take a supplementary examination or take the examination all over again. If you did not take the examination before coming to China, then you need to go to Health Center, Tianjin Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau for examination. Students who study in China for one year (or more) can take physical examination for free by submitting the copy of Admission Notice (or relevant documents) and passport.

As X1 Visa must be converted to residence permit within 30 days from the date of entry, please complete the physical examination as soon as possible (physical examination report is needed to convert X1 Visa to residence permit).

X1 Visas must be converted to residence permit within 30 days from the date of entry. Specific procedures are as follows:

d. Dependent Visa

If you need a family member to accompany you when you study in China, you need to write an invitation letter after registration and also request for “Proof of Study” issued by Office 212, School of International Education. The invitation letter and “Proof of Study” should be mailed to the family member, and be used to apply for private visa in the Chinese embassy in his/her home country. After entry, visa extension will be processed by Tianjin University.

(1). Opening Ceremony and Orientation

After the registration, the opening ceremony and orientation will be organized for non-degree students and degree students respectively. The arrangement is as follows:

(2). Chinese learning

a. How to Apply for Auditing of Chinese Language Courses?

This allows a student to attend the Chinese language course in the university without having to do any of the course work and without receiving credit. Procedures for application are as follows:

• Go to Office 212 or 214 of the School of International Education, collect and fill the “Application Form for Auditing of Chinese Language Courses”(Degree students should get the form at office 214 while non-degree students should get the form at office 212);

• The teacher in charge has to fill the opinion section of the application form;

• The Office of Academic Affairs reviews the form and makes class placement;

• Admission into the Chinese language class for auditing.

b. How to take Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK & HSKK)?

HSK is an international standardized test to assess the ability of non-native Chinese speakers to communicate in Chinese in daily life, academic and working settings.

HSK is comprised of six levels from Level 1 to Level 6.

HSKK assesses the test takers’ ability to express themselves in oral Chinese. It consists of three levels: the beginner level, intermediate level and advanced level. This exam is in the form of recording.

Please go to Office 209, the School of International Education to collect and fill in the “Internet User Application Form”, and then take it to Office 211 for a stamp. Afterward, take the Form with your passport to Office 102, Information and Network Center at Weijin Road Campus (or Office 104, Information and Network Center at Peiyang Park Campus) to apply for the access to campus internet.
