News Journalism Across the Media: Summative Activities LESSON PLAN Level: Grades 7 to 10 About the Author: This unit was adapted from lessons created by Rosalind Ross, David Halliday and John Crocker of the Durham Board of Education in The AML Anthology (1990), produced by the Association for Media Literacy News Journalism Across the Media: Summative Activities Overview This is the final lesson in a unit that explores news journalism across the media. In this lesson, students complete a final project where they construct, present and analyze information about news journalism from a variety of mediums: newspapers, radio and television. Students will also participate in a unit test that measures their understanding of the key concepts that have been emphasized during the course of this unit. Learning Outcomes Students will demonstrate: an understanding of how news journalism operates in a variety of mediums an ability to conduct research and synthesize information from a variety of sources into a coherent whole - using written, oral and visual skills an understanding of how the key concepts for media literacy apply to news journalism in newspapers, television and radio Preparation and Materials News Unit Test Procedure Final Project The final evaluation for the unit will be a project that consolidates the various materials that have been presented throughout the previous lessons. The project should provide for a variety of activities and difficulty. Students should be given class time to research, develop and present their projects. Suggested topics include: Compare the presentation of a news story in all three of the media studied. (2-3 students) Create an 8-minute radio news program, with commercials, based on news in the school or community. (4-5 students) Research a news story as it develops over time. (1-2 students) Stage a debate in which you consider the relative virtues of two media, e.g., radio and television (5 students) Compare the differences in format between newspapers and news magazines. (1-2 students) Select one major newspaper and analyze its editorial and advertising content. List percentages of space allotted to international, national, and local events, sports, etc., and explain the focus of the paper (1 or 2 students) Read a series of editorials from a paper and analyze the political stance of the editor. Write a paper explaining this position. (1 student) Visit a radio/television station and write a report on the development of a news program. (1 student) Visit a newspaper office and write a report on the production of the paper. (1 student) The Internet shares elements of both print-based and broadcast journalism, yet is a distinct medium in its own right. Students could: Compare how news sources on the Internet treat selected news stories, compared to television or newspapers. Compare the format of supporting Web pages for a radio or television news program, or for a newspaper, to the original medium. (In particular, note how the Web enhances or develops stories from the original medium.) Compare mainstream sources of news on the Internet to alternative online news sources. Evaluation There should be two components to the evaluation. One of the components is to be a written submission and the other is to be an oral report or performance.     International Journal of Communication 10(2016), 4239–4257 1932–8036/20160005 Doing “Authentic” News: Voices, Forms, and Strategies in Presenting Television News DEBING FENG1 Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, China Unlike print news that is static and mainly composed of written text, television news is dynamic and needs to be delivered with diversified presentational modes and forms. Drawing upon Bakhtin’s heteroglossia and Goffman’s production format of talk, this article examined the presentational forms and strategies deployed in BBC News at Ten and CCTV’s News Simulcast. It showed that the employment of different presentational elements and forms in the two programs reflects two contrasting types of news discourse. The discourse of BBC News tends to present different, and even confrontational, voices with diversified presentational forms, such as direct mode of address and “fresh talk,” thus likely to accentuate the authenticity of the news. The other type of discourse (i.e., CCTV News) seems to prefer monologic news presentation and prioritize studio-based, scripted news reading, such as on-camera address or voice- overs, and it thus creates a single authoritative voice that is likely to undermine the truth of the news. So far, we have only talked about these duties in the abstract sense. It is now time to take a closer look at the step-by-step process of putting a show together. Story Ideas and News Value A newscast starts with a series of story ideas, which are nothing more than potential ideas that could eventually end up in the show. Story ideas come from a variety of sources, and the good producer will often come to work with several story ideas already formulated. These may come from other media, be follow-ups from stories done the previous day, or be a consequence of personal observation (see Table 3.1 for examples). Producers like their reporters to come to work with story ideas, and reporters should have some concrete suggestions for stories, even if these ideas never pan out. Too many reporters show up with the expectation that producers will have a story already assigned to them. This can waste a lot of precious news time as reporters scramble to try and set up a story or contact news sources. Producers and reporters will suggest their story ideas at the editorial meeting, where they and the news director will discuss events going on in the area. The purpose of the meeting is to consider all possible story ideas and narrow them down to a list of stories that will go in the newscast.

Usage of Newsroom Computer Systems as Indicator of Media Organization and Production Trends: Speed, Control and Centralization Mato Brautović* SUMMARY A convergent work method within the 24/7 deadline environment has created a need for digitalization and process automation. In order to realize that work method, an increasing number of media uses newsroom computer systems. Those systems are useful for the entire process of news production. Basic characteristics are enabling news gathering, article and scenario writing, communication, video viewing and editing, program length measurement, material archiving, broadcast control, dissemination of finished material and information program planning. The implementation of newsroom computer systems causes changes in the news production workflow, processes and in newsroom organization. Starting with the theory of technological determinism, this article is based on influences of the digitalization process on work rou- tines, newsroom organization and the journalist-management relationship on the Croatian public broadcaster Hrvatska radiotelevizija (HRT). Research used includes the ethnographic method of semi-structured interviews with handpicked personnel, as well as the company’s internal document analysis. It has been established that the television news production process has acceler- ated and become more efficient. Editor’s tasks have been directed towards in- formation, and the possibility of journalist control has been introduced.     21 Types Of News In the fIrst several chapters, we saw media systems in flux. Fewer newspaper journalists but more websites, more hours of local TV news but fewer reporters, more “news/talk” radio but less local news radio, national cable news thriving, local cable news stalled. But what matters most is not the health of a particular sector but how these changes net out, and how the pieces fit together. Here we will consider the health of the news media based on the region of coverage, whether neigh- borhood, city, state, country, or world. Hyperlocal The term “hyperlocal” commonly refers to news coverage on a neighborhood or even block-by-block level. The tradi- tional media models, even in their fattest, happiest days could not field enough reporters to cover every neighborhood on a granular level. As in all areas, there are elements of progress and retreat. On one hand, metropolitan newspapers have cut back on regional editions, which in all likelihood means less coverage of neighborhoods in those regions. But the Internet has revolutionized the provision of hyperlocal information. The first wave of technology— LISTSERV® and other email groups—made it far easier for citizens to inform one another of what was happening with the neighborhood crime watch or the new grocery store or the death of citizens can now snap a beloved senior who lived on the block for 40 years. More recently, social media tools have enabled citizens to self-organize, and connect in ever more picture of potholes and dynamic ways. Citizens can now snap pictures of potholes and send them to send to city hall, or share city hall, or share with each other via Facebook, Twitter or email.

Murrow Original album Fred Friendly Capturing moments in time, capturing history, is something people have long sought to do—in writing, in photographs, and in sound. In 1948, legendary newsmen Edward R. Murrow and soon-to-be legendary news producer Fred Friendly gave to the record-buying public the chance to capture history, own it, and to relive it via the great and important radio news reports of an era just gone by. Fred Friendly (nee Ferdinand Friendly Wachenheimer) was one of the most important, influential journalists of the 20th century. Born in New York City in 1915, Friendly showed an early interest in and aptitude for radio. In his youth, he and his father built a radio receiver in order to listen to boxing matches being broadcast over KDKA in Pittsburgh. While in high school, in the 1930s, Friendly began to make his first radio appearances on radio by being an actor on various radio shows broadcast over WJAR in Providence, Rhode Island. By 1936, after graduation, Friendly went to work at Rhode Island’s WEAN, a NBC Blue affiliate. At WEAN, Friendly worked as an announcer, conducted man-on-the-street interviews, and produced a daily five-minute biography series titled “Footprints in the Sands of Time.” Some years later, long after the “Footprints” installments were packed away into mothballs and Friendly was eking out a career at various radio outlets including Armed Forces Radio, Friendly was approached by the Decca label to put “Footprints” out in record form.

    MAPPING DIGITAL MEDIA: GLOBAL FINDINGS DIGITAL JOURNALISM: MAKING NEWS, BREAKING NEWS Mapping Digital Media is a project of the Open Society Program on Independent Journalism and the Open Society Information Program Th e project assesses the global opportunities and risks that are created for media by the switch- over from analog broadcasting to digital broadcasting; the growth of new media platforms as sources of news; and the convergence of traditional broadcasting with telecommunications. Th ese changes redefi ne the ways that media can operate sustainably while staying true to values of pluralism and diversity, transparency and accountability, editorial independence, freedom of expression and information, public service, and high professional standards. Th e project, which examines the changes in-depth, builds bridges between researchers and policymakers, activists, academics and standard-setters. It also builds policy capacity in countries where this is less developed, encouraging stakeholders to participate in and infl uence change. At the same time, this research creates a knowledge base, laying foundations for advocacy work, building capacity and enhancing debate. Covering 56 countries, the project examines how these changes aff ect the core democratic service that any media system should provide—news about political, economic and social aff airs. Th e MDM Country Reports are produced by local researchers and partner organizations in each country. Cumulatively, these reports provide a unique resource on the democratic role of digital media. In addition to the country reports, research papers on a range of topics related to digital media have been published as the MDM Reference Series.
