Story of the Alfa Romeo Factory and Plants : Part 1 the Early Portello
Story of the Alfa Romeo factory and plants: Part 1 The early Portello Factory Patrick Italiano Special thanks go to Karl Schnelle, Indianapolis, USA, for his patient proofreading and editing of the English version of this text Over the last few years, we have had to deal with large changes in Alfa Romeo-related places and buildings, as we witnessed the destruction of the old Portello factory, step by step in the late 80s, and also the de-commissioning of the much more modern Arese plant. Sad tales and silly pictures of places and people once full of pride in manufacturing the most spirited cars in the world. As reported by historians, it has long been – and still is for few – a source of pride to belong to this “workers aristocracy” at A.L.F.A.. Places recently destroyed to make place for concrete buildings now containing commercial centres or anonymous offices, places where our beloved cars were once designed, developed and built. It’s often a mix of curiosity and thrill to have the chance to look behind the scenes and see into the sanctuary. Back in 1987, when the first part of Portello was being torn down, Ben Hendricks took us on a visit to the Portello plant in Het Klaverblaadje #40. That was, as Jos Hugense coined the title 15 years later, the “beginning of the end”. Today, one can see Alfas running on the Fiat assembly lines along with Fiat Stilos and at best Lancia Thesis. These Fiat plants are no longer the places where distinguished and passionate brains try to anticipate technical trends five years into the future, thus ensuring that the new generation of Alfas keep such high company standards, as Ing. -
ARTE:GESTI=VITA:ATTIMI Di Alessandro Ciffo a Cura Di Serena Mormino
Classic Trader Zeitzeichen: Giuseppe „Nino“ Farina
In Focus: Milan, Italy the View on the City’S Tourism Industry Before and After Expo 2015
DECEMBER 2014 | PRICE €400 IN FOCUS: MILAN, ITALY THE VIEW ON THE CITY’S TOURISM INDUSTRY BEFORE AND AFTER EXPO 2015 Ezio Poinelli Director Paolo Buffa Senior Consultant www.hvs.com HVS MILAN | c/o Hemera Ventures, Blend Tower, Piazza 4 Novembre, 7, 20124 Milan, ITALY This article focuses on the Milan hospitality and tourism industry and the effect the hosting of the 2015 World Exposition is expected to have on the industry. Forecasts and impacts of the event are quite debated in the hospitality community and numbers mainly hypothetical until they will materialize, especially in the context of Italy’s complicate economic and social environment (persistent crisis, delays and scandals on the assignments of the works for Expo, etc). Despite the situation, various new hotel projects will be materializing in the next months and coming years in the greater area of Milan, aiming to leverage on Expo positive heritage and the expected possible recovery of the economy. Besides the Expo, it is very important to look at the fundamentals of the market, in order to assess how it will evolve and possibly benefit from the 6 months of global exposure, and finally how many rooms the market will be able to absorb. In writing this article, we utilise the expertise of HVS in each market to the full extent by combining our in- house data and research, interviews with opinion leaders, together with published information regarding the examined destination. City Overview Milan is Italy’s second largest city, the country’s business and financial centre, and a leader in technological and scientific research. -

MARCO ZANUSO and RICHARD SAPPER: SELECTIONS FRON the DESIGN COLLECTION August 19 - November 9, 1993
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release August 1993 MARCO ZANUSO AND RICHARD SAPPER: SELECTIONS FRON THE DESIGN COLLECTION August 19 - November 9, 1993 An exhibition of twenty objects designed by Marco Zanuso and Richard Sapper opens at The Museum of Modern Art on August 19, 1993. Organized by Anne Dixon, study center supervisor, Department of Architecture and Design, NARCO ZANUSO AND RICHARD SAPPER: SELECTIONS FRON THE DESIGN COLLECTION includes televisions, appliances, chairs, and a variety of other objects designed by Zanuso and Sapper, working both individually and in collaboration, from 1959 to 1978. The exhibition highlights the ways in which Zanuso's and Sapper's designs manifest an understanding of the relationship of user to object, embodying what Zanuso has called the "metaphoric quality which objects have for those who use them." It is the exploitation of this metaphoric quality that endows their products with a level of emotional and intellectual meaning usually outside the realm of product design. The range of meanings evoked by the designs is broad. The "Grillo" telephone, for instance, is a pleasing, shell-like object which affirms the intimacy of conversation. The "Doney 14" television, with minimal casing around the picture tube, is an object in which simple design establishes a straightforward dialogue with the viewer, while the "Black 201" television is a solid black cube that reveals the screen behind its translucent face only when turned on.
