We experience this dramatic Arctic landscape when the sun never sets and wildlife is returning to this very rich area of the Arctic. There are northern birds in abundance, including Thick-billed Murre, Black- legged Kittiwake, and King and Common Eiders. Other highlights include Sabine’s Gulls, Red-throated Loon and with luck, the much sought-after Ivory Gull! The mixing of ocean currents from Baffin Bay and Lancaster Sound results in very rich marine life! Sea ice is melting back and marine mammals are traveling north along the ice floe edge where food is concentrated. We encounter a diverse array of birds and mammals, from King Eiders to Pacific Loons, Snowy Owls to Northern Saw-whet and Great Gray Owls, Long-tailed Jaegers to Sabine’s Gulls, and muskox to arctic foxes. Our first location is the boreal forest of Riding Mountain National Park. Here we explore the park in search of forest birds plus mammals including black bear, moose, elk, red fox, and beaver. A variety of warblers along with a diverse suite of other birds can be found in the varied habitat of this park. We fly north to Churchill in search of belugas and other arctic wildlife. Every year, tremendous numbers of beluga whales gather in the waters of the Churchill river. We take two boat trips to observe the whales and hear their vocalizations via hydrophone. Exploring the tundra, we also have a chance to find arctic fox and hare and with luck, even a polar bear! This is also prime time for arctic breeding birds. Loons, eiders, shorebirds, longspurs and much more will all be making the most of the arctic summer.
