Baffin Island Walrus & Bowheads NEW Arctic mammals, birds and Inuit culture Far north lies the domain of two truly awesome mammals – walrus and bowhead whales. Our search for these remarkable arctic residents takes us to Igloolik and the shores of the Foxe Basin in Nunavut, Canada. Foxe Basin and adjacent Baffin Island are areas rich in wildlife and Inuit have lived here for centuries. Bowhead whales, weighing up to 100 tons, feed along the edge of the sea ice as they wait to move further north. Groups of walruses haul out on pieces of sea ice to bask in the sun. We travel with Inuit guides in search of these massive creatures plus ringed and bearded seals and many birds. The opportunity to learn from our local hosts is a highlight for many. Photography should be superb with 24-hour warm arctic light and a backdrop of gleaming ice. Along the way, we enjoy many arctic birds migrating over the water and nesting on land, including Red Phalarope, Common and King Eiders, Sabine’s Gull, Arctic Tern and many more.
