When we play cards or board games like checkers or cards do we need to wear special clothes or shoes? Take two answers. Note : Use age appropriate games as examples.

No, we don’t need special clothes or shoes for card games or board games. Are there any games you can think of where we need special clothes, shoes or other things? Take answers.

You thought of some of the same ones I was thinking of. What do we need to play ? (Special field, baseball, bat, baseball , ) Discuss two or three sports that are popular in your area.

When we play certain games, like or hockey, there is a lot of contact. People that play these sports need to have special pads to protect their body from injury. Pads protect their chests, knees and hips and protect their face and head.

There is one more area that needs protection and that is the mouth. When we take a hard hit, we can damage our teeth.

Show the mouth side of the magnet board.

This is what a healthy mouth and teeth look like, and we want to keep them this way. We can protect our teeth and mouth by using a mouthguard. A mouthguard covers and protects our teeth.

Take a moment to place the missing tooth magnet in place and then put the mouthguard over

the top as shown. Please do this in such a way that the audience cannot see that you have layered the two magnets.

If we should fall or accidently get hit with an elbow or while we are playing a sport then we won’t knock out our teeth. All professional players wear mouthguards when practicing and playing their sport.

Without a mouthguard, many players suffer injuries to their mouth like this.

Mouth Safety: Mouthguards ! ! Remove the mouthguard magnet.

This image shows how one blow to the mouth in a sport can destroy the teeth and . Point to the areas on the magnet as you discuss them.

• One tooth has been knocked out. • One tooth is broken and one tooth has been moved out of position. • The gums have been injured as well.

It will be very expensive and time consuming to fix this injury. We only get one set of permanent teeth and we need to take care of them!

Pass out the ToothFairy 101© Oral Injuries handout. Take time to discuss the pictures with the children.

There is more than one type of mouthguard. A mouthguard is a plastic mouthpiece that covers all of the surfaces of the teeth. It is designed to protect your teeth, lips, cheeks, tongue, and tissues of the mouth.

There are three types of mouthguards: • Stock: A stock mouthguard is rather large and usually comes in one size. It is inexpensive and may be uncomfortable. It offers less protection because it is not fitted to your mouth. Due to its size, it may make it more difficult to breathe.

• Boil & Bite: A boil & bite mouthguard is one that you heat in hot water until it is slightly soft. While it is soft, you place it in your mouth and bite down. You hold this position until the mouthguard has cooled. It provides a better fit and protection than a stock mouthguard, but can also be slightly large and uncomfortable.

• Custom: A custom mouthguard is made by a dentist. It has a snug fit, providing the best protection and comfort since it is designed specifically for your mouth.

Do you need to clean a mouthguard?

Yes, mouthguards should be cleaned after wearing. Use warm water and a soft bristled toothbrush to gently scrub the mouthguard until it is clean.

Let’s review what we have learned today.

When playing games where there is contact, like , football, or baseball, you can injure your teeth and mouth. You should ALWAYS wear a mouthguard.

Mouth Safety: Mouthguards ! !

Mouthguards can be custom made by your dentist or found at stores that sell .

It is a good idea to wear a mouthguard when: • there is a possibility that you might fall. • be hit or make contact with others. • be hit by sporting equipment. • accidently hit yourself (trying to catch a ball, make a or block a shot).

Some places where an injury might happen are: List any sport that is popular in your area.

• trampoline parks • bike races • kickball • soccer • karate • ice skating • roller skating • • baseball • football (rugby) •

I am sure you can think of even more places or activities where you might use a mouthguard.

Distribute the ToothFairy 101© “Mouth Safety: Mouthguards” worksheet and complete as a group.
