    /vo I 11,-7 ERICAN LOCAL COLOR IN THE BRITISH ISLES Lawson, Jr. Committee swvn en<b> 525633 -YW . 12/1 il ABSTRACT The reception In various foreign countries of the work of major American writers like Emerson, Whitman, and Twain has been the subject of scholarly inquiry. The present stu­ dy is an extension of this approach to some minor American authors whose work, even among critics, is assumed to be in­ digenous and national. The investigation both makes clear a foreign image of America and helps us to understand what, in their time, the local color writers were. Both the na­ ture of the British reception of these writers and the rea­ sons for it are treated. The approach here has been to examine the contemporary reputations in the British Isles of American local color writers from four broad geographical areas—the Far West, the Midwest, the South, and New England. The particular writers studied include Joaquin Miller, Helen Hunt Jackson, Mary Hallock Foote, Edward Eggleston, John Hay, James Whit­ comb Riley, Will Carleton, Alice French, George Washington Cable, Mary Murfree, Thomas Nelson Page, Joel Chandler Har­ ris, Mary E. Wilkins, and Sarah Orne Jewett. Bret Harte, the subject of this sort of inquiry elsewhere, is also re­ ferred to at times, and reviews of his work appear in the annotated bibliography with which the work concludes. Mostly from English periodicals, the more than three- hundred annotated reviews and articles appearing in the bib­ liography were taken as the indicators of taste for a signi­ ficant segment of the British public.

    Concentric: Literary and Cultural Studies 36.2 Sept. 2010: 33-59 Mark Twain’s Racial Ideologies and His Portrayal of the Chinese Hsin-yun Ou Department of Western Languages and Literature National University of Kaohsiung, Taiwan Abstract Although Mark Twain’s depictions of the Chinese are not always free from contemporary racial stereotypes, they are more sympathetic than what was typically portrayed in the popular media. In “Disgraceful Persecution of a Boy,” Twain unfolds his antipathy towards the discriminatory treatment the Chinese suffered. In “John Chinaman in New York,” the narrator pities the “friendless Mongol,” but finally finds himself only able to understand the Chinese as superficial stereotypes. In “Goldsmith’s Friend Abroad Again,” through the narrator’s initial ironical statements and later sufferings and disillusionment, Twain satirizes American racist attitudes against the Chinese. In Roughing It, Twain characterizes the Chinese with depth and humanity; despite ill treatment from lower-class whites, the Chinese in the portrait Twain paints are hard-working, patient, and benevolent to American society. Ah Sin vindicates the Chinese by presenting a Chinese laundryman who outsmarts most of the white characters. Twain’s anti-racism fueled his powerful anti-imperial writings later in his life, in which his humanitarian sentiments and sense of moral righteousness became more prominent in expressing sympathy for oppressed groups, including the Chinese, and insisting on racial tolerance. As such, when Twain observed the Chinese, he was in fact examining the American character in comparison with his ideal vision of the U.S. as a nation that represented the forces of social justice and liberalism.

    Report to the U.S. Congress for the Year Ending December 31, 2017 Contents September 3, 2018 Dr. Carla Hayden Librarian of Congress Washington, D.C. 20540-1000 Dear Dr. Hayden: In accordance with The Library of Congress Sound Recording and Film Preservation Programs Reauthorization Act of 2016 (P.L. 114-217), I submit to the U.S. Congress 02 Twenty Years of Grant Giving the 2017 Report of the National Film Preservation Foundation. 04 Why Preserve Film? Americans have been making films for more than 120 years, but it is only in the last 30 that we have rallied to save those images. In 1996, Congress created the NFPF to help 06 Expanding Access archives, libraries, and museums to rescue this history and share it with the public. Thanks to federal funding secured through the Library of Congress, entertainment 08 Community of Support industry and foundation support, and the unwavering dedication of preservationists, there is much good news to report. 10 Films Preserved through the NFPF As of 2017, the NFPF programs have preserved more than 2,350 motion pictures— 40 Financial Statements newsreels, actualities, cartoons, silent-era productions, avant-garde films, home movies, and other independent works that might otherwise have faded from public 42 Contributors memory. Tremendous credit is due to the 300 public institutions that have taken part in our programs to save culturally significant motion pictures. Once copied to film 44 Board of Directors & Staff stock and safely archived, the works begin a new life through teaching, exhibition, broadcast, DVD, and most especially these days, the Internet.
