They can also become part of our Pendle Elite programme – a unique training programme set up by Nelson and Colne College, to develop students over three years to help them prepare for college, progress to top universities in the country and, ultimately, reach their career aspirations.

10 01282 863970 www.colneprimet.co.uk Community Involvement

At Colne Primet Academy we see ourselves as a learning community at the heart of the wider community and as such we encourage our students to be active citizens in their local community. We have a ‘Community Action Group’ consisting of student volunteers from across the year groups who volunteer their time and talents to serve their local community. For example, some students visit a local care home for the elderly to talk to the residents and join in activities with them as well as invite them to events at our Academy as V.I.Ps.

Building Bridges Local Charities All our students in Years 7 and 9 experience working on a ‘building bridges’ programme that explores the important issues around identity, culture and community and provides them with the opportunity to work as a team on a potentially winning community project. If selected as the winning project it is funded by the Building Bridges programme to run as an actual event with our students leading with their own design. Recently, Colne Primet Academy students won with a project designed to celebrate different cultures by bringing together people from different faiths and backgrounds to celebrate their traditional foods. This was a huge success and well received by the local community.

Students work hard to raise funds to support local charities such as Open Door, Pendle Hospice and Petal Cancer Fund. Celebrations for Primet’s Class of 2020

Colne Primet Academy’s Class of 2020 are celebrating fantastic GCSE results which have enabled them to progress to further education places. A range of A Level and vocational courses await the students at local sixth form colleges. Colne Primet Academy Principal, Dean Lythgoe said: “Proud to be Primet is something our staff and students often say, and after the events of this year, we can most definitely say we are proud of our Class of 2020. “They have handled the difficulties of the past few months incredibly, and shown just what a close knit year group they are with the way they have supported each other throughout the lockdown period. We’re delighted that despite so much uncertainty, they have now been able to progress to college and we wish them all the best as they take the next steps in their education.”

Students rewarded with sport themed day Dedicated and motivated Year 10 and 11 students were rewarded with a fun-filled sport themed end of term day out. The hard working students began their day with an hour’s football on the indoor 3G pitch at Burnley FC in the Community’s Leisure Box before tackling the climbing walls at the centre. Some of the students overcame a fear of heights to brave the leap of faith, cheering each other on and supporting their friends to make the leap. The students then headed to Turf Moor for a ground tour before being surprised with an appearance from defender Charlie Taylor. The students took the opportunity to ask him questions about his career, motivations and how he deals with negativity on social media before posing for selfies with him.

12 01282 863970 www.colneprimet.co.uk Make sure you regularly visit the news page of our website or our Facebook and Twitter pages to keep up to date with what our students have been achieving academically, in extracurricular activities or in the local community. Here’s a recent snapshot…

Alumni deliver careers sessions

Four former students returned to the academy to talk to students in Years 10 and 11 about their career paths so far. Organised by former student Aaron Pares, who is volunteering at the academy while he completes a qualification in working with young people, the academy alumni spoke about their educational and employment journeys since completing their GCSEs. Aaron was joined by Stephanie Burrows, a PCSO who has passed her assessments to become a Police Constable, Ross Whitaker who is in the Royal Navy and about to be deployed for eight months to Bahrain and Ryan Sparks who is a plumber with ambitions of owning his own company.

Student signs his way through lockdown

A Year 7 student used the school closure from March to July to learn a new skill, along with his Mum. Ben Norris and Mum Leanne Sargeant-Thwaite completed British Sign Language’s Introducing British Sign Language course after Primet’s Director of Maths, Mrs Leak told students about the free course. Ben said: “My Mum said it would be a good thing to learn whilst we have more time on our hands and it may come in useful in the future. My Mum has always wanted to learn sign language too because she works in a school and believes it is a great skill to learn to help others feel included if they are deaf or can’t communicate by speaking. “I’m very proud of both me and my Mum for completing the course because it’s something we can say we did together to possibly help others one day whilst we were in lockdown. Both my Mum and I try to use bits of sign language when communicating at random times just to refresh our minds on what we have learnt.”

01282 863970 www.colneprimet.co.uk 13 Where are they now? We are always thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students, and to hear from former students who are pursuing their dream career. Here are some of our success stories.
