  • The Serious Business of Graphic Novels Guide by A
The Serious Business of Graphic Novels Guide by A. David Lewis (11/10/06) Prepared for the NACAE 1. This is just the title slide, something static yet interesting to have on the screen while the audience is waiting. In addition to specifying the date and place (to make it seem tailored for them), I really like the contrast between a “serious” title and a very “un-serious” image (in this case, my own caricature); it’s also a decent place to “hide” your own logo or company name in plain sight, if such is the case for you. I would only ask, as people modify and use this presentation as a template, that they mention its being “Derived from The Serious Business of Graphic Novels by A. David Lewis, courtesy of the NACAE” as some sort of sub-title. It needn’t even be that big and it gives you a bail-out if the audience objects to something or asks a question to which you don’t know the answer. 2. This slide is entirely optional but highly necessary in some fashion if the group to whom you are speaking is unfamiliar with you. That is, if it’s your own class, skip it; they know you, and you already have (hopefully!) a rapport. But, if you’re relatively new to them, then this should be your “credentials slide:” Why should they listen to you about comics? The goal here is “show, don’t tell” -- You’ll explain what your own book covers or university campus photographs or company building means aloud.

  • Super Citizen by Reg P. Wydeven May 7, 2011
Super Citizen By Reg P. Wydeven May 7, 2011 The other day my son and I were shopping for underwear for him. It took us quite a while to pick some, as he had so many characters to choose from (I’m proud to say he chose ‘Star Wars’). As we shopped, I couldn’t help but think about the Underoos underwear I had when I was my son’s age. Underoos were awesome underwear consisting of an undershirt and briefs that resembled the costumes of popular characters. I had sets to look like Luke Skywalker, Boba Fett and Aquaman. I even had a set of long underwear that looked like Batman’s costume. My favorite pair, however, was easily Superman. While I loved ‘Star Wars,’ there was nothing quite like unbuttoning your shirt after a long day of school to expose that red ‘S.’ After all, what could be cooler to a six-year-old than pretending to be the Man of Steel, who was faster than a speeding bullet, stronger than a locomotive and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound? I would dream about being able to fly and fight “the never ending battle for truth, justice and the American way.” If my son would have settled on the Superman undies, however, he could only pretend to fight the never ending battle for truth and justice. Apparently the American way has gone up, up and away. In issue 900, the latest release of DC’s ‘Action Comics,’ Superman announces his intention to renounce his U.S.

Peter Parker is an average, tech-loving high school student in Queens. Or, at least he was until he mysteriously gained spider-like powers, granting him the ability to stick to walls, a precognitive awareness of danger called spider- sense, and the proportionate strength of a spider. After developing his own super-strong webbing (and a makeshift costume), Peter has adopted the identity of Spider-Man to try to help people in his neighborhood. An internet video of Spider-Man in action caught the attention of Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, who recognized the potential in this budding young super hero. As a civil war erupts between Captain America and Iron Man, who disagree on the Sokovia accordsʼ mandate that the Avengers register as a government-controlled organization, Tony pays a surprise visit to Peter with an offer: a full upgrade and the chance to join Iron Man and his team! i WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY BRAND? THE MODERATING EFFECT OF BRAND NOSTALGIA ON CONSUMER RESPONSES TO CHANGED BRANDS A dissertation submitted to the Kent State University College of Business in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Alison B. Shields April 2012 ii iii Abstract Marketers often make changes to brands to make the brand seem current or exciting. Some updates are successful while others are spectacular failures. This dissertation establishes a connection between consumer acceptance or rejection of updated brands and the consumer’s reported brand nostalgia. In this dissertation, I refine the current marketing definitions of nostalgia to develop a more specific construct of brand nostalgia, develop a scale to measure the construct of brand nostalgia, examine the differences between schemas for nostalgic brands and non-nostalgic brands, and show that consumers’ affective and attitudinal responses to changes in a brand are moderated by brand nostalgia. Nostalgia has been defined as “a positively toned evocation of a lived past” (Davis 1979), and “a fondness for possessions and activities associated with days of yore” (Holbrook 1993). Consumers have been observed to engage in nostalgic behaviors, from re-watching favorite old movies (Holbrook, 1993) to reminiscing about favorite cars from their youth (Brown, Kozinets and Sherry 2003) to consuming specific foods as a way to reconnect with the past (Loveland, Smeesters and Mandel, 2010). Consumers have also reported nostalgic feelings for particular brands or items (Holbrook and Schindler 2003). When individuals recall nostalgic memories, they recall affect and brand information stored in their schema for the target brand (Collins and Loftus 1975).

    15. Space Bitches, Witches, and Kick-Ass Princesses Star Wars and Popular Feminism Megen de Bruin-Molé Since its acquisition by Disney in 2012, the Star Wars franchise has been widely praised for its feminism. New heroes such as Jyn Erso and Rey have been hailed as feminist triumphs for Star Wars and mainstream entertain- ment more broadly. New characters aimed at a new generation of fans, like Rebels’s pink-clad fighter-cum-artist Sabine Wren, and new novels devoted to characters like Leia Organa and Ahsoka Tano (from The Clone Wars),1 are often cited as part of a growing commitment to female characters and to feminism by association. Likewise, the marketing force of Star Wars can now be felt strongly in female-targeted sectors (makeup, fashion, dolls).2 Does all of this mean, as one reviewer put it, that Star Wars “finally awakens to a feminist world”?3 Such assertions have rubbed some fans the wrong way—after all, women have made up a significant and vocal portion of the Star Wars fanbase from the beginning.4As one fan commented, “I’m sure that people went ‘Wow!’ when they saw the first female Jedi in the prequels. The fanfic of the 1970s had women Jedi all the time and women smugglers. Nothing new there for the older fans.”5 Will Brooker has also argued that the original female fans made the franchise their own through grassroots community-building, 1 Claudia Gray, Bloodline (London: Random House, 2016); E. K. Johnston, Ahsoka (Glendale, CA: Disney Book Group, 2016). 2 Lisa Richwine, “Disney’s ‘Star Wars’ Marketing Force Reaches for Female Fans,” Reuters, December 15, 2015, http://uk.reuters.com/article/us-film-starwars-women -analysis-idUKKBN0TX1J720151215.
