Yet unexpected celebrity deaths like Philip Seymour Hoffman’s at 46 spark debate and impart lessons. Ditto from James Gandolfini, Amy Winehouse, Heath Ledger, and others. Although Mr. Hoffman had three children with Marianne O’Donnell, they were unmarried. Plus, he mentioned only one child in his will, not three. Amy Winehouse didn’t even have a will, so we don’t know what she would have wanted. Under the law, her parents inherited while her ex-husband got nothing. Heath Ledger’s five year old will gave his parents and 3 sisters his $20M estate, failing to mention Michelle Williams or their child. And after Mr. Gandolfini died at 51, reports said his will clumsily sent $30M of his $70M to the IRS. The stories should make tax advisers go to the mattresses. Key lessons? 1. Keep It Private. Incredibly, Hoffman, Ledger and Gandolfini, all ended up with wills in probate. Probate is public, expensive, time consuming and unnecessary. Like Amy Winehouse, It is worse not to even have a will (after dying without one, singer John Denver’s family spent six years in court). But a will still has to go through the courts. For very little money, a revocable trust disposes of your assets outside court. You still do a simple pour-over will. -

This is just the title slide, something static yet interesting to have on the screen while the audience is waiting. In addition to specifying the date and place (to make it seem tailored for them), I really like the contrast between a “serious” title and a very “un-serious” image (in this case, my own caricature); it’s also a decent place to “hide” your own logo or company name in plain sight, if such is the case for you. I would only ask, as people modify and use this presentation as a template, that they mention its being “Derived from The Serious Business of Graphic Novels by A. David Lewis, courtesy of the NACAE” as some sort of sub-title. It needn’t even be that big and it gives you a bail-out if the audience objects to something or asks a question to which you don’t know the answer. 2. This slide is entirely optional but highly necessary in some fashion if the group to whom you are speaking is unfamiliar with you. That is, if it’s your own class, skip it; they know you, and you already have (hopefully!) a rapport. But, if you’re relatively new to them, then this should be your “credentials slide:” Why should they listen to you about comics? The goal here is “show, don’t tell” -- You’ll explain what your own book covers or university campus photographs or company building means aloud. -

Accordingto the American Bar Association, recent statistical studies show that 55% ofAmericans die without a will or estate plan. These people don’t have up-to-date estate strategies to protectthemselves and their families in the event of illness, accidents, or untimelydeath. Are you one of 55%? Here aresome reasons you need an estate plan. And for those of you with an existingestate plan, reasons to update your plan: You probably will want to considerthe needs of a new child or grandchild in your estate plan. The death of your spouse or anotherbeneficiary can greatly affect your plan. So, too, can the death of your namedexecutor, your children’s guardian, or your trustee. Super Citizen By Reg P. Wydeven May 7, 2011 The other day my son and I were shopping for underwear for him. It took us quite a while to pick some, as he had so many characters to choose from (I’m proud to say he chose ‘Star Wars’). As we shopped, I couldn’t help but think about the Underoos underwear I had when I was my son’s age. Underoos were awesome underwear consisting of an undershirt and briefs that resembled the costumes of popular characters. I had sets to look like Luke Skywalker, Boba Fett and Aquaman. I even had a set of long underwear that looked like Batman’s costume. My favorite pair, however, was easily Superman. While I loved ‘Star Wars,’ there was nothing quite like unbuttoning your shirt after a long day of school to expose that red ‘S.’ After all, what could be cooler to a six-year-old than pretending to be the Man of Steel, who was faster than a speeding bullet, stronger than a locomotive and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound? I would dream about being able to fly and fight “the never ending battle for truth, justice and the American way.” If my son would have settled on the Superman undies, however, he could only pretend to fight the never ending battle for truth and justice. return to updates The Genealogy of Heath Ledger by Miles Mathis Zen koan: imagine the sequel to the film Groundhog Day First published November 21, 2018 I was watching the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus on the internet when I got bored and decided to look up Heathcliff Ledger's ancestry. You will be glad I did. Why? Because it shows he is from the Families, which indicates. yep, he faked his death. Go here for the first good dunking. There, you will notice his mother and maternal grandmother are scrubbed, telling us something big is hidden there. But it must be really big, considering all the other things they are willing to give up on the same page. Six of his eight great grandparents are given, and four are immediate red flags. One is a Campbell, possibly tying Ledger to the top of the Scottish peerage. One is a Jackman, almost certainly linking Heath to fellow Aussie actor Hugh Jackman. One is a Lyons, possibly linking Heath to the Queen, who is a Bowes-Lyon. The other is a Lang, possibly tying us to Andrew Lang, who I mentioned in a recent paper. The next generation before that gives up more, since we also find the names Sumner, Monk, Solomon, Usher, and Mackay. The names Monk and Solomon are definitely Jewish, while Sumner probably links Heath to Gordon Sumner—better known as Sting. The Ledger in this generation is Edson Ledger, which given name may link us to the Edsons/Edisons of Massachusetts, involved in the Salem Witch hoax. The Monk married a Ramshaw, and the Ramshaws were related to the Atkinsons, Hawkins, and Chapmans—which links us to Stephen Hawking, who was also a Hawkins and an Atkinson. -

By DAVID LESER Two years after Heath Ledger scandalised sections of middle America with his near- miraculous performance as a gay cowboy, he would light up the screen with another tour de force, this time as the lovelorn, heroin-soaked poet, Dan, in the Australian cult movie, Candy. Little known outside Australia, this film was based on a loosely autobiographical book of the same name written by Australian author, Luke Davies. In the film Ledger somehow managed to find his way inside the twisted, twilight world of the drug addict. I pull the syringe from her arm and drop it on the table and hold my thumb down over the tiny hole I’ve made. I release the tie with my other hand. Candy looks down at her arm like a child who’s relieved that the innoculation is over. Then she says, mmmm, and her facial muscles relax and she lies back on the bed and says, that is heaps better. Heaps better. Fuck oh God. Fuck fuck fuck. This is the best. Oh God, this is awesome. This was – as the New York Times commented of Ledger’s role – acting of the first order. “Ledger looks and plays the part of the scheming user exceptionally well. He’s deep in the character’s skin right from the start.” Ledger and his co-star, Abbie Cornish – who recently appeared opposite Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Golden Age - had received their tutoring from an expert, a heroin addict belonging to a Sydney group called “Proud Users.” “Abbie and Heath got lots of lessons with a prosthetic arm on how to inject,” the film’s producer, Margaret Fink told Vanity Fair.
