A History of Giving AFE's Awarded Educational Grants for 2020 2020 • ISSUE FOUR QUARTERLY NEWS FOR ENDOWMENT SUPPORTERS AFE’s Awarded Educational Why Support AFE – A History of Giving Grants for 2020 Read About Lee Phillip Bell and Be Inspired When William and Lee Phillip Bell created their popular daytime drama, “The Bold and the Beautiful,” presumably they sought a name that would lure potential viewers. Unintentionally they selected one that perfectly describes Ms. Bell. A woman of striking beauty, she and her husband took a bold step and created, co-produced and launched their first daytime drama, “The Young and the Restless” in 1973. Her ties to the floral industry stem from her parents who founded “Phillip’s Flowers,” a very successful re- tail florist in Chicago. The business continues to be owned and operated by second, third and fourth generation family mem- bers. When establishing the grant, Ms. Bell noted, “It’s a joy to honor James and Helen Phillip by helping people prepare to earn a livelihood in the flower business, which has meant so much to our family.” To simply focus on Ms. Bell’s obvious wealth would miss who she truly was. Warm and gracious with an easy smile, she made visitors feel comfortable and glad to be in her presence. This certainly was the case in 2007 when her nephew, Jim Phillip, and I visited her to discuss a possible gift to AFE. Yes, she was “warm and gracious,” but only a fool would take Lee Bell for granted and she did not suffer fools lightly. One does not acquire such wealth without the savvy to steward it wisely. So, when we approached her about a gift to honor her parents, she asked numerous questions: How much money does AFE currently invest? Who invests the funds and how? How much is distributed for charitable purposes annually? How does AFE If you have an old life insurance policy you no longer need, identify scholarship recipients? Major construction on both campuses is the most visible result, but the campaign funded more than new facilities. An even larger share of campaign contributions support something less visible but no less permanent — the University’s endowment. At the start of the campaign in 1998, Northwestern’s endowment was $2.02 billion. When the campaign ended on August 31, 2003, contributions and investment earnings had boosted the endowment to $3.16 billion, a 56 percent increase. What does the increase mean in real terms? Among other things: • Thirty-seven new named endowed professorships. Northwestern now is better positioned to compete for renowned scholars and artists and to retain the ones already on our faculty. • One hundred and one new undergraduate scholarships, 33 new graduate fellowships, and 52 new pro- fessional school scholarships. Greater numbers of excellent students will now say yes to Northwestern because we can meet their financial aid needs.

The Ounce of Prevention Fund is a public-private partnership committed to program and policy innovation on behalf of young children in poverty. Throughout our 25-year history, we have developed, implemented, and expanded research-based programs that help children from birth to age five develop the foundations for long-term success in school and in life. 2 Change comes slowly; but over 25 years, the Ounce of Prevention Fund has helped create paths to education reform in Illinois and throughout the nation. In 2007, the Ounce marked its 25th year. Since our founding, we have pursued 3 a single vision: to help our most vulnerable children develop strong foundations from which they can grow into healthy, capable young people who are able to succeed in school and life. We have always focused on promoting the well-being of the whole child: her physical, emotional, and intellectual development—in the context of the relationships that are most important to her. All of our work in program development, training, advocacy, and research grows out of this vision. This year, some of our long-term efforts have come to fruition: evidence from our doula program that investing in a child’s development even before birth yields real changes in teen parents’ behavior; increased funding for programs supporting children’s and mothers’ mental health; preliminary results from our Educare program that we are narrowing the achievement gap before kindergarten; and a growing network of like-minded change agents who have built Educare Centers in five states around the country, with five more centers in active planning.
