An Unvarnished Look At The “Little House” Author. By Jeff Pfeiffer Laura Ingalls Wilder has become known and beloved — especially to a base of fans who call themselves “Bonnetheads” — through the autobiographical fiction of her bestselling Little House series of novels in which she transformed her frontier childhood into an enduring legend beginning with Little House in the Big Woods in 1932. Many people’s ideas and images of Wilder and her family — and of the 19th-century American frontier itself — also come from the equally enduring 1974-83 TV series that was named after the third of the author’s Little House novels, 1935’s Little House on the Prairie. Yet, despite how Wilder depicted her life in her books, and how she was depicted via the series, there is still much to learn about the woman who, before she even published her first book at age 65, did more than just live as a pioneer as a child. She later in life did everything from writing a column for a farm journal to being a chicken farmer herself. “Laura Ingalls Wilder,” the latest installment of PBS’ terrific biographical documentary series American Masters, looks beyond the books and the TV show to discover the actual person who has become a pioneer legend sort of in her own making, with her books tending to omit the grimmer sides of frontier life in general, and certain elements of her own life in particular. “I am constantly amazed how much more there is for me to learn,” says Melissa Gilbert, who famously portrayed young Wilder on the TV series and offers insights throughout this special, “because I have had the opportunity to come at the Little House stories in so many different angles in so many different ways. “As a 9-year-old child I had read Little House in the Big Woods, and then I got the show, and then my focus was the scripts and where we were going with that for 10 years. THE MASKED DANCER Cha-Cha In Costumes Celebrities Battle It Out On The Dance Floor. By Taylor Neumann If you’re one of the millions of people addicted to The Masked Craig Singer, FOX has another show for you this December. Now there’s Robinson The Masked Dancer, eerily similar to its predecessor except for one crucial detail — the dancing! Celebrities will hit the dance floor to show off their fancy footwork, clad head to toe in elaborate costumes and masks. They’ll perform in front of a panel — this iteration has a familiar face in Ken Jeong, as well as Beverly Hills, 90210’s Brian Austin Green, Paula Abdul and High School Musical’s Ashley Tisdale. And, every episode, based on a combination of panelist votes and at-home studio audience votes, someone will be unmasked. If the idea sounds familiar, it might be because it’s based on a popular segment from The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The show is hosted by comedian Craig Robinson, who knew he wanted to be a part of the series after a visit to the mother ship. “I loved the idea, and then I actually went to see The Masked Singer,” he said. “I went to one of their tapings, and then it just made perfect The sense.
