Would you like to introduce yourself? Joanne: Hello, everyone. I am a new guest! Hooray! (laughs) Rachel: Yeah! Joanne: So, I am the Technical Services Librarian here at the Oak Creek Library. My name is Joanne. I graduated from Carroll University with a degree in music, which was super helpful for libraries. Not so much. Rachel: (laughs) Joanne: And then went to UW-Milwaukee to get my masters in library science, and I’ve been working in public libraries ever since. I’ve always had a love of music since I've been in a child. My mom is actually a church organist, and so I think that’s where I get it from. Rachel: Wow, yeah. Joanne: I used to play piano—I did about 10 years and then quit. (laughs) So, I might be able to read some sheet music but probably not very well.

Her research focuses on the U.S. media industries in the 1980s and 1990s. Her recent and forthcoming publications include: a chapter on Macaulay Culkin’s career as a child star, a monograph focusing on the work of John Hughes and a co- authored journal article on Hulk Hogan’s family films. Acknowledgements: The author would like to thank Frank Krutnik and Kathleen Loock for their invaluable feedback on this article and Daniel Chard for assistance with proofreading. 1 ‘Give people what they expect’: John Hughes’ Family Films and Seriality in 1990s Hollywood Keywords: seriality, Hollywood, comedy, family film Abstract: This article explores serial production strategies and textual seriality in Hollywood cinema during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Focusing on John Hughes’ ‘high concept’ family comedies, it examines how Hughes exploited the commercial opportunities offered by serial approaches to both production and film narrative. First, I consider why Hughes’ production set-up enabled him to standardize his movies and respond quickly to audience demand. My analysis then explores how the Home Alone films (1990-1997), Dennis the Menace (1993) and Baby’s Day Out (1994) balanced demands for textual repetition and novelty. Article: Described by the New York Times as ‘the most prolific independent filmmaker in Hollywood history’, John Hughes created and oversaw a vast number of movies in the 1980s and 1990s.1 In a period of roughly fourteen years, from the release of National Lampoon’s Vacation (Ramis, 1983) to the release of Home Alone 3 (Gosnell, 1997), Hughes received screenwriting credits on twenty-seven screenplays, of which he produced eighteen, directed eight and executive produced two.

Academy members can ' t be forced to vote for the film they like best. Their biases and political calculations can ' t be dissected. To subject the Academy to such scrutiny would be impossible and unfair. It ' s the Academy ' s awards, not ours.

    THE FACE OF AN ANGEL SYNOPSIS The brutal murder of a Bri1sh student in Tuscany leads to the trial and convic1on of her American flatmate and Italian boyfriend in controversial circumstances. The media feeding frenzy around the case aracts once successful, but now struggling filmmaker Thomas, to be commissioned to write a film - 'The Face of an Angel', based on a book by Simone Ford an American journalist who covered the case. From Rome they head to Siena to research the film. Thomas has recently separated from his wife in a bi=er divorce and leI his 9-year-old daughter in Los Angeles. This unravelling of his own life, and the dark mediaeval atmosphere surrounding the case, begins to drag him down into his own personal hell. Like Dante journeying through the Inferno in the Divine Comedy, with Simone as his guide to the tragedy of the murder, Thomas starts a relaonship with a student Melanie.     TRANSCRIPT A PINEWOOD DIALOGUE WITH KENNETH BRANAGH AND MICHAEL CAINE The prolific and legendary actor Michael Caine starred in both the 2007 film version of Sleuth (opposite Jude Law) and the 1972 version (opposite Laurence Olivier). In the new version, an actors’ tour de force directed by Kenneth Branagh and adapted by playwright Harold Pinter, Caine took the role originally played by Olivier. A riveting tale of deception and deadly games, this thriller about an aging crime novelist and a young actor in love with the same woman is essentially about the mysteries of acting and writing.
