De Simone 2012 Abstract In the mid-seventeenth century Nikon, Patriarch of Moscow, introduced a number of reforms to bring the Russian Orthodox Church into ritualistic and liturgical conformity with the Greek Orthodox Church. However, Nikon‘s reforms met staunch resistance from a number of clergy, led by figures such as the archpriest Avvakum and Bishop Pavel of Kolomna, as well as large portions of the general Russian population. Nikon‘s critics rejected the reforms on two key principles: that conformity with the Greek Church corrupted Russian Orthodoxy‘s spiritual purity and negated Russia‘s historical and Christian destiny as the Third Rome – the final capital of all Christendom before the End Times. Developed in the early sixteenth century, what became the Third Rome Doctrine proclaimed that Muscovite Russia inherited the political and spiritual legacy of the Roman Empire as passed from Constantinople. In the mind of Nikon‘s critics, the Doctrine proclaimed that Constantinople fell in 1453 due to God‘s displeasure with the Greeks. Therefore, to Nikon‘s critics introducing Greek rituals and liturgical reform was to invite the same heresies that led to the Greeks‘ downfall. -

Are Texans Being DENIED ACCESS to a VITAL MEDICINE? A Scientific Assessment of Marijuana This booklet may be reproduced in total for free distribution. PDF files are available at http://www.DPFT.org Introduction The goal of the Drug Policy Forum of Texas (DPFT) is to minimize the damage done to society by both drug abuse and poorly conceived drug laws. To that end we provide scientific information and expert opinion while promoting discussion of what might be more effective alternatives to our current drug policies. Members may differ on the best answers. We hold the traditional view that unrestricted debate and a well informed public are essential elements of democracy. DPFT does not advocate or encourage the recreational use of illegal or legal drugs. Our members are simply concerned citizens from no particular political or social group, but we’re fortunate to include many experts among our leaders and advisors. Executive Director, Dr. G. Alan Robison, is a National Academy of Sciences award winning pharmacologist, Dr. Fred Murad recently won the Nobel prize for medicine and Dr. Susan Robbins teaches a national award-winning TV course on “Drugs and Society.” We work closely with many other experts here and around the world. We welcome you to join us. This booklet addresses one element of drug policy, the use of marijuana as medicine. Federal policy seems oddly schizophrenic in that since 1978 the federal government has grown, and mailed some 300 marijuana cigarettes a month to a handful of patients who had to prove to the satisfaction of three government agencies (DEA, FDA and NIDA) that marijuana was an essential element in their treatment, yet has closed the program to new entrants since 1992. -

Durrill Abstract Rehearsal for Redemption: The Politics of Post-Emancipation Violence in Kentucky’s Bluegrass Region By James Michael Rhyne In the late antebellum period, changing economic and social realities fostered conflicts among Kentuckians as tension built over a number of issues, especially the future of slavery. Local clashes matured into widespread, violent confrontations during the Civil War, as an ugly guerrilla war raged through much of the state. Additionally, African Americans engaged in a wartime contest over the meaning of freedom. Nowhere were these interconnected conflicts more clearly evidenced than in the Bluegrass Region. Though Kentucky had never seceded, the Freedmen’s Bureau established a branch in the Commonwealth after the war. -

I-B-4 HUNTER COLLEGE Naming of “The Peggy” Dance Studio RESOLVED, That the Board of Trustees of The City University of New York approve the naming of the dance studio on the 6th floor of Thomas Hunter Hall at Hunter College “The Peggy” in tribute to Peggy Tirschwell, for her exceptionally distinguished service to Hunter College and CUNY. EXPLANATION: Richard Gilder has pledged $500,000 for expenses relating to the renovation of a dance studio on the 6th floor of Thomas Hunter Hall at Hunter College. The renovated dance studio would be known thereafter as “The Peggy” after his sister Peggy Tirschwell, who has been an exceptionally valued and beloved member of the Provost’s Office at Hunter College since September 2002, specializing in curriculum development, support and accreditation. In April 2016, Ms. Tirschwell will celebrate 51 years with The City University of New York. Mr. Gilder founded his own firm, now known as Gilder Gagnon Howe & Co. LLC. In 1994, with long-time friend, Lewis E. Lehrman, he created the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, a leading non-profit provider of K-12 educational programs and materials in American history. They also co-founded The Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance and Abolition at Yale, and are co-founders and sponsors of the Lincoln Prize, the Frederick Douglass Book Award and the George Washington Book Prize. Mr. Gilder is a founding and continuing trustee of the Central Park Conservancy, a trustee of the American Museum of Natural History and New-York Historical Society, and an honorary trustee of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation. -

The Senior Class is in the process of preparing for the Senior Prom to be held on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Horseheads Senior High School from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Dinner will be served. Tickets will be on sale outside the cafeteria during lunch periods on February 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th, 2011. Students who reached quota must pick up their tickets at that time. Students may reserve their table on February 24th and 25th, 2011 outside the cafeteria during lunch periods.
