SENIOR CLASS NEWS Seniors will be ordering their caps and gowns and graduation announcements on January 10th and 11th outside the cafeteria during periods 5,6,7,8. Information regarding ordering was distributed to seniors in homeroom on December 22nd. The cost of a cap and gown will be $26.00 unless seniors earned it through magazine sales. Even if you earned your cap and gown through magazines sales, you still must fill out and hand in the order form. The Senior Class is in the process of preparing for the Senior Prom to be held on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Horseheads Senior High School from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Dinner will be served. Tickets will be on sale outside the cafeteria during lunch periods on February 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th, 2011. Students who reached quota must pick up their tickets at that time. Students may reserve their table on February 24th and 25th, 2011 outside the cafeteria during lunch periods. If you will be bringing a date who is not a current Horseheads High School student, a guest registration form must be filled out and returned to Mr. Hamula or Mrs. Lenhardt by February 25th for approval by the principal. These forms can be picked up in the Main Office or they can be downloaded on the senior class website. Please note that no person over the age of 20 will be permitted to attend the prom.

THANK YOU FROM THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society would like to thank all those who purchased poinsettias! Our fundraiser was a big success! The money is used for scholarships awarded to seniors in the May ceremony. Also, reminder to the Sophomores and Juniors that the activities sheets for selection into NHS are due February 9th. CORNING COMMUNITY COLLEGE MATH DAY On October 7, 2010 a group of Juniors and Seniors went to Corning Community College Math Day. All students currently taking Pre-Calculus, Calculus 1 or Calculus 2 were given the CCC Math Competition test to take in class. The top 5 scores were submitted as our team score. Horseheads came in second in our school size division and third overall. The top 5 scorers from Horseheads were John Weachock, Shaunak Amin, Danielle Burgess, Matt Eisner, and Whitney Resue. Great Job to all who participated!

BUSINESS STUDENT OF THE MONTH The Business Dept. is pleased to announce Kirsten Dunn and Calvin Woolhiser as “Business Students of the Month” for December. This award is given to a student who exhibits outstanding business qualities including leadership, dedication, determination, innovation, and motivation. This student is punctual, maintains a high grade point average, and has an excellent attendance record. Students must also strive for personal excellence and proficiency in at least three business subjects. Congratulations!

AREA ALL STATE MUSIC FESTIVAL NEWS Several students from the High School bands and orchestra were honored by their acceptance to the Zone 15 Junior and Senior Area All-State Music festivals this fall. Our Zone 15 is made up of 5 counties and approximately 40 different schools. Students accepted at the Junior High Area All-State hosted by Broadway Middle School - Elmira were Emma Stillings - Oboe, Jeffrey Hansen – French Horn, Patrick Leslie - Alto Sax, Claire Preston – Bassoon, Macella Dean – Clarinet, Emily Wagner - Clarinet, Adam Bassler – Trumpet, Jessica Hoffman – Trumpet, Allison Jay, Joshua Tinker -Clarinet and Melissa Feroni- Bass Clarinet in the Band. In the orchestra Shuchi Amin, Emily Grella, Nina Ionta, Nidhi Shah, Madalyn Owen, and Emily Willis were selected from Horseheads Middle School and Emma Leonard, Morgan Stoltzfus, Alyssa Militello, Sophia He, and Alex Stryker we selected from the high school. Students accepted to the Senior High Area All-State hosted by Haverling High School in Bath were Renee Botelho – Flute, Rachel Fivie – Flute, Emily Jacque - Oboe, Kate Nicole Hoffmann - Clarinet, Morgan Mathews - Clarinet, Sara Stuart - Clarinet, Natalie Good - Clarinet, Shuwei Chen - Clarinet, Mike Potter - Bass Clarinet, Andrew Grella - Tenor Sax, Sarah Walker - Bari Sax, Mike Maynard - Trumpet, Sean Bassler - Trumpet, Alex Brown - Trumpet, Emily Jay - Trumpet, Mariah Robbins - French Horn, Cory Sweet - Trombone, Derek Johnson - Trombone, Adam Myers - Trombone, Kirsten Campbell - Trombone, David Walrath - Euphonium, Garrison German - Tuba, Brent Nichols - Tuba, Andrea Gaylord - Tuba, and Patrick Mayville - Mallet Percussion. Students selected for the orchestra are: Corey McCann and Ginelle Edger – Viola, Nicole Wright and Jessica Alexander – cello, and Nors Hexum - String Bass. All students performed solos at the State School Music Association Solo festival the previous Spring to be eligible to apply for membership at these festivals.

MARCHING BAND NEWS The Horseheads High School Blue Raider Marching Band has completed its 2010 Season, Night at the Opera. Music performed was Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, Giocomo Puccini’s Nessun Dorma from Turandot and “Bacchanale” form Camille Saint-Saens’ Samson and Delilah. The band competed at East Syracuse Minoa, Corning East, Vestal, and Norwich. The marching band performed at all home football games including the homecoming game and the game honoring all football, cheerleader, and band seniors. The Blue Raiders performed in exhibition at the Grand Central Plaza Fall Festival and Corning’s Bandtoberfest. The season culminated in their State Championships at the Carrier Dome, placing 3rd in their large School Div. 2 class with a score of 88.85. Field Conductors are Ryan Anderson, Zachary Crowle, and Sarah Walker. This has been Horseheads Marching Band’s 26th year of competition in the New York State Field band Conference. The Blue Raider Marching band will also be performing at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Parade, Studio Recording Experience, and Auxillaration programs this spring at Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida. ACADEMIC CHALLENGE The High School Academic Challenge Team, captained by senior Zach Crowle, won the Twin Tier Quiz League in November. Academic Challenge continued their success at the national Knowledge Master Open contest by placing 7th in the state and 177th nationwide. We’re looking forward to the Spring Semester competition of TC3 and, saving the best for last, the Students v. Teachers Match held annually in May. Excelsior! STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS The Student Council would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to all the students, parents, and community members who supported the High School in the Food Drive this past November. We were able to donate an impressive 3,000 non-perishable food items to our local Food Bank servicing nearly 1,000 local families. We are especially proud of Senora Scott’s Period 1/2 class who collected 602 non-perishable food items! It is truly amazing to see the support of our community and parents as well as how caring and involved our students are at Horseheads! SNOW BALL - The Student Council is excited to invite Horseheads students to the annual Snow Ball Semi-Formal, Friday February 4th in the High School Cafeteria from 8-11pm (please note the time has changed from when the calendar was printed). This year’s theme is Candy Land! Come celebrate winter and the new semester with us! $5 tickets will be sold during lunch February 2nd to February 4th. CANDY GRAMS - The Student Council will be selling Candy Grams during lunches February 9th to the 11th to be delivered on February 14th (Monday) during an additional Homeroom. Students may purchase a Candy Gram for their special someone and friends during lunch or from Mrs. Lane in Room 203 or Ms. Doren in Room 267. Parents may purchase a Candy Gram for their favorite student Wednesday February 9th at Parents Night. This year the Student Council is offering Candy bar Grams and Lollipop Grams for $1. NEW ACE ENGINEERING COURSES The High School Technology Department will offer 2 ACE engineering classes through Corning Community College starting in the 2011-2012 school year. The classes are designed for students who might be interested in a career in engineering. Both classes are limited to students in grades 10 through 12. The class descriptions are as follows: L094 ACE Engineering Orientation: 1 Semester - 1 Credit (HHS); 1 Semester – 2 Credits (CCC); ENG 1010 Engineering Orientation Students will study and learn about the different engineering career opportunities. The course involves statistics, design solutions and problem solving. Many of the projects are real life projects where students will problem solve, design and produce a solution. The focus will be on the big five engineering fields: Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Civil, & Architectural. Fulfills 3rd year Math or Science Requirement L091 ACE Graphics for Engineers (3-d CAD): 1 Semester - 1 Credit (HHS); 1 Semester – 3 Credits (CCC); ENG 1010 Graphics for Engineers Students will use SolidWorks to create 3-d objects. Students will then learn how to layout their 3-d object in orthographic projections and dimension them using current engineering drafting standards. Types of drawings to include: Auxiliary Views, Section Views, Assembly, Detail Drawings and Design Concepts.

Business courses continually evolve to keep pace with current and projected Business practices in order to prepare our students well with 21st century skills. These courses will provide the sound basic Business knowledge that Mr. Trump states high school students need in order to be well prepared to pursue a Business degree in a post-secondary setting.

At Horseheads High School, we proudly offer 17 different Business Courses: ACE Courses (Accelerated College Education) – for college credit at a reasonable price: ACE First Year Experience – Learn personal, academic, and professional success strategies – 3 college credits ACE Web Page Design – Design web pages using Hyper Text Markup Language – 3 college credits ACE Accounting I – (course can also fulfill the 3rd unit of Math) Basic accounting principles – 4 college credits ACE Accounting II – Continuation of course I, advanced accounting principles used in various business settings – 4 college credits

One Credit Courses: Career & Financial Management – Basic Economics, Business Structures, Career Assessment, and Financial Literacy Computer Applications – sound, basic knowledge of business computer uses and assoc. software Dreamweaver – Design web pages to promote business with Adobe Dreamweaver & Photoshop Business Law – Develop basic understanding of laws that will affect you on a daily basis Math for Personal Finance – (course can also fulfill the 3rd unit of Math) Math applicable to taxes, insurance, payroll, banking, budgeting Introduction to Marketing – Basic marketing principles as they apply to our global society Business Math Using Excel – (course can also fulfill the 3rd unit of Math) Practical math learned using Excel, such as checking accounts, sales & income taxes, home and auto purchases Business Ownership & Marketing – All aspects of entrepreneurship, including creation of a business plan to startup, fund, choose a location and market a business.

Half Credit Courses: Sports & Entertainment Marketing – project based learning of how marketing functions are applied to these two multi-billion dollar industries Career Pathways – Sixteen career clusters are explored to determine proper career pursuit Notetaking – Learn strategies to take concise notes for college and professional settings International Business – Learn culture, geography, trade, currencies, international law, and business communications College Computer Concepts – Learn formatting for resumes, letters, reports, spreadsheets and presentations for use in other classes, college and the workplace

Horseheads High School Extra-Curricular Clubs 2010-2011

Academic Challenge – Advisor: Ms. Doren. We are a competitive quiz team competing in local and national competitions throughout the school year. With Jeopardy style buzzers we compete against each other in practice to prepare for our competitions against area schools. You don't have to be a genius in every subject to join our team, just ready to have fun! Academic Challenge meets every Thursday in Room 267.

Book Club – Advisors: Ms. Doren & Mr. Brechner. Book Club is a chance to meet other "book worms" and discuss books of different genres and old and new favorites. We read Vonnegut, Morrison, Verne, to short stories and poetry. If you like to read and discuss favorite characters, favorite parts or how it should've ended. Come join us the last Tuesday of the month in room 161.

National Honor Society - Advisor: Mr. Carichner. National Honor Society is devoted to students who exhibit excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, and character both in school and outside school. Students are selected after an application is completed and they have maintained a 90 and above average. There are three mandatory meetings yearly. Please watch the announcements.

Science Club – Advisors: Ms. Steigerwald, Ms. Anastasio, and Ms. Hunter. Part of Science Club's focus will be environmental issues: working on two electronics drives, raising money to get better recycling bins, cleaning the stream behind the school, and anything else students come up with. We also usually do Science Olympiad in Feb. and Chem Bowl in May. Beyond that, we brainstorm with the students and find out what they are interested in. Watch announcements for meetings twice per month.

Art Club – Advisors: Mrs. Malloy and Mr. Hart. Come and show off your creativity! We meet every Wednesday in room 151 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

Student Council - Advisors: Mrs. Lane and Ms. Doren. Our goal is to promote student spirit by planning and implementing activities throughout the year, including Spirit Week. To foster leadership in our officers...to promote student/community involvement by hosting Blood Drives and Food Drives. Meetings are in room 203 during homeroom.

The Greenroom Players – Advisors: Mr. Hynes, Mr. Milliken, and Mrs. Thompson. This student group presents three major productions each year in the high school auditorium: a fall play or musical, a Variety Show in early January, and a Broadway-style musical in March. Opportunities are available for students in grades 9-12 in acting, singing, dancing, as well as many backstage assignments (lighting, sound, props, makeup, costumes and such). Students will find information on upcoming auditions and backstage opportunities in the school newsletter and through the school's announcement system.

Yearbook Club – Advisors: Ms. Kisloski and Ms. Deiseroth. Wouldn't it be great if you could capture and document all the good times you’ve had in High School? YOU CAN! It’s called Yearbook! Students are responsible for all phases of yearbook publications: planning, design, layout, writing copy, taking pictures, and selling advertisements. There is a job for any student who expresses an interest. Meetings take place every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday in room 170. Please join us for any or all of these days that you’re able!

Freshman Class – Advisor: Mrs. Hurd. Duties of the elected class officers: attend and participate in monthly meetings, volunteer work, participate in and help tally orders for class sale, plan and run the Black Light Dance in the spring (co-planned and co-run with Sophomore Class officers and advisor). Watch announcements for monthly meetings in room 206.

Sophomore Class – Advisor: Mrs. Donaldson. They plan and execute fundraisers and make charitable donations to organizations like the food bank and animal shelter. They have also donated to school improvements like the flags in the auditorium. It is mainly a leadership training and community service group. One popular project is the Black Light Dance Party which is organized in conjunction with the Freshman Class Officers. Sophomore class officers meet weekly Wednesdays at 7:15 and during homeroom.

Junior Class – Advisor: Mr. Hugg. Officers are elected in the Spring of their sophomore year. The major function is the Junior Prom in the spring, for which there is a big fundraising event. Meetings will be announced.

Senior Class – Advisors: Mr. Hamula and Mrs. Lenhardt. The Senior Class takes care of the planning and implementing of various events in a student’s final year in high school. These events include: the magazine sale; the victory dance; the senior trip; the senior prom; the senior banquet; and graduation. The club consists of nine officers, but all students in the class are welcome to participate in the events. Meetings are Monday's after school in room 158.

Interact – Advisors: Ms. Steigerwald, Ms. Anastasio, and Ms. Hunter. Interact is a community service club sponsored by the Horseheads Rotary Club. Students participate in community and school activities that emphasize the value of volunteerism. Leadership opportunities are available and encouraged through committee chair people and club officer positions. Weekly ½ hour organizational and informational meetings are usually held and it is expected that each member will do a minimum of 5 service hours each semester in order to remain in good standing. Students can join early in both the Fall and Spring semesters. We meet the first and last Thursday of the month right after school in the Library.

Marching Band and Colorguard – Advisor: Ms. Matejka. Marching band membership is open to Band instrumentalists grades 9-12 and students interested in Colorguard (spinning flags, and props and dance). We practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8:30pm throughout Sept. and October with competitions and or Football games on Saturday afternoons or evenings. The marching (battery) percussion section, Stationary percussion (Pit/accessory) section and Colorguard have a few practices over the summer on Wednesdays from 6pm to 8pm. The band plays entertaining music of various themes each year. We compete at about four competitions all around the state culminating with Championships in the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University. The marching band also performs in local parades such as the Horseheads Memorial Day Parade and The Big Flats Community Days' Parade. We also perform at the annual Bandtoberfest Show in Corning. The marching band has over one hundred members. Please see Mrs. Matejka in the Music Room if you’re interested.

Varsity H – Advisor: Mr. Hillman. Positions available are: PRESIDENT: Writing announcements, Pep Assembly, writing Thank you notes, communication with advisor, help organize club events, meet with officers on a regular basis to address concerns, Sports Banquet. VICE-PRESIDENT: Decorations, DJ for dances, assist President at any meeting and to lead the meeting in the absence of the President, Sports Banquet. TREASURER: Making deposits, paying bills, liaison with Central Treasurer for Athletics, balancing the monthly ledger. SECRETARY: Bulletin boards, newspaper articles, taking minutes at meetings. SEASON REPS (FALL/WINTER/ SPRING): Responsible for getting information to captains and helping out with concession stands. HISTORIAN: Hanging all photos of teams and newspaper clippings on the bulletin boards, keeping all photos UPDATED! ATTENDANCE IN SCHOOL AS WELL AS ATHLETIC EVENTS IS A REQUIREMENT. All officers are required to: Work concession stands •Use lunch/activity to sell tickets, passes, sign-up for sports teams •Stop by Athletic Office to see if any help is needed •Recruit other Athletes to work concession stands, decorate •Work tournaments •Sell tickets during lunch periods •Help out with the Sports Banquet. Applications are submitted in the spring, and members are selected in June. We meet in the North Gym during homeroom.

Debate Club – Advisor: Mrs. Brice-Hyde. Do you know how to argue? Can you persuade people to believe in your point of view? The Horseheads Debate team needs you! We debate school from all over the world on various hot topics impacting the world today. This year we hope to visit the United Nations in NYC and we may even wind up at National championships in Los Angeles! Join us on Mondays and Wednesday in room 266 right after school.

Mock Trial – Advisor: Mrs. Brice-Hyde. If you are a fan of Law & Order, The Practice, and Boston Legal or aspire to a career in the Criminal justice system, Horseheads Mock Trial team is for you! We have a history of excellence as participants in the New York State Bar Associations Annual Mock Trial Competition. We plan and conduct criminal and civil cases. We prep witnesses’ testimony and plan for convictions and acquittals. Our team is coached by Mrs. Brice-Hyde. Richie Rich and John Brennen from the Public Advocates office, both Horseheads graduates and practicing attorneys at law in our community advise our team. If you want to be a lawyer or an actor, join us every Friday after school in room 266.
