Naramata Bench Sub-Geographic Indication January 2018 Technical Description and Geographic Extent Documentation in support of a formal application to the BC Wine Authority for the creation of a new Sub-GI named Naramata Bench. Scott Smith, Eterrna Consulting Pat Bowen, Summerland Research and Development Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Naramata Bench Sub-Geographic Indication Naramata Bench Sub- Geographic Indication TECHNICAL DESCRIPTIO N AND GEOGRAPHIC EXT ENT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The ‘Naramata Bench’ brand is firmly established in a regional socioeconomic context and particularly within the BC wine and wine tourism industry. The proposed sub-Geographic Indication (sub-GI) covers an area of just under 3,650 ha along the east side of the Okanagan Valley from Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park in the north to Penticton Creek within the City of Penticton in the south. The area includes approximately 250 ha of vineyards and some 50 wineries. The proposed sub-GI is composed of two landscape elements – the glaciolacustrine landscape and the mixed sediments landscape. The glaciolacustrine landscape is characterized by a gullied, gently undulating land surface and is the signature landform of the Naramata Bench. The second landscape element is the mixed deposits that lie above the glaciolacustrine landscape. At higher elevations are common outcrops of coarse grained metamorphic rocks (gneiss) which have been altered through geologic faulting and are termed ‘mylonite’ The soil used extensively for agriculture on the Naramata Bench sub-GI is the Penticton silt loam. This stone-free soil has a well-developed profile with a distinct organic matter-rich topsoil underlain by a highly favourable rooting zone up to 60 cm thick over the unweathered calcareous parent material. -

January 2005 Citation: KVRI Burbot Committee. 2005. Kootenai River/Kootenay Lake Conservation Strategy. Prepared by the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho with assistance from S. P. Cramer and Associates. 77 pp. plus appendices. Conservation strategies delineate reasonable actions that are believed necessary to protect, rehabilitate, and maintain species and populations that have been recognized as imperiled, but not federally listed as threatened or endangered under the US Endangered Species Act. This Strategy resulted from cooperative efforts of U.S. and Canadian Federal, Provincial, and State agencies, Native American Tribes, First Nations, local Elected Officials, Congressional and Governor’s staff, and other important resource stakeholders, including members of the Kootenai Valley Resource Initiative. This Conservation Strategy does not necessarily represent the views or the official positions or approval of all individuals or agencies involved with its formulation. This Conservation Strategy is subject to modification as dictated by new findings, changes in species status, and the completion of conservation tasks. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho would like to thank the Kootenai Valley Resource Initiative (KVRI) and the KVRI Burbot Committee for their contributions to this Burbot Conservation Strategy. OKANAGAN RIVER BASIN Washington, U.S. – British Columbia, Canada INTRODUCTION The transboundary Okanagan River winds Map adapted from through topography most expect to see in Okanagan Nation Alliance Utah or Nevada. Relative to other Canadian climates, it is little wonder that tourists flock to the basin every year from all parts of Canada. The basin’s warm climate offers respite from Canadian winters, and the semi- arid conditions offer farmers in the U.S. a large number of growing days. Unfortunately, the rapid development in Canada and the drive to increase apple yield in the U.S. have discovered the basin’s limiting factor: water. Like many experiences in the Pacific Northwest, the case of the Okanagan River Basin is a story about water and fish. During the 20th century, dozens of anadromous fish populations that spawned and reared in the three large natural lakes along the Okanagan River† were sacrificed in the name of flood control, power, and irrigation benefits. Over time, the region’s values have shifted toward protection of the waning viability of at-risk species, especially Okanagan sockeye. This particular species has a great deal of meaning to the native peoples in the area and persists as the last anadromous salmon stock in the Canadian Okanagan. 1 Existing collaborative infrastructure, such as the 1964 Columbia River Treaty, creates opportunity for the two countries to harmonize efforts to address this problem. ABSTRACT Vertical distribution and onshore movement of maturing kokanee were studied by means of extensive gill net sets in Nicola Lake between 1958 and 1961. In late spring of 1959 maturing kokanee were found largely in the upper 30 feet of the lake but gradually dispersed to occupy all depths to 100 feet by mid-summer. A diel vertical migration occurred in which matur• ing kokanee moved surfaceward during the day and downward at night in 1959. In 1961 the reverse condition was observed wherein kokanee avoided areas of bright illumination during the day but moved surfaceward at night. No effect on vertical distribution of kokanee by extensive and rapid fluctua• tions of the thermocline, initiated by wind induced seiches, was noted in 1959 or 1961. -

Chapter 12 MIDDLE SHUSWAP RIVER WATERSHED Figure 12-1 . Shuswap River above dam site (Couteau Power Company 1912) 1. PROJECT DESCRIPTION 1.1 Facilities The initial plans for a power project at Shuswap Falls had been developed prior to 1912 by the Couteau Power Company based in Vancouver, B.C. The Shuswap Falls generating station, Wilsey Dam and Peers Dam were constructed and owned by West Canadian Hydroelectric Corporation and went into service in 1929. The project consists of impounded storage in Sugar Lake controlled by Peers (Sugar Lake) Dam, and power generation from Wilsey Dam at Shuswap Falls 31 km downstream. The Shuswap Falls project was acquired by the B.C. Power Commission (a predecessor of B.C. Hydro) in 1945.
