Theological Studies 70 (2009) BOOK REVIEWS AN OLD TESTAMENT THEOLOGY:AN EXEGETICAL,CANONICAL, AND THE- MATIC APPROACH. By Bruce K. Waltke, with Charles Yu. Grand Rapids, Mich.: Zondervan, 2007. Pp. 1040. $44.99. Waltke divides his study into three parts: six introductory chapters on OT theology and method; 21 chapters on salvation history (Genesis and the OT Histories), each chapter focused on what he calls a “gift”; and six chapters on “gifts” from other OT writings (Prophets, Wisdom, Ruth, etc.). Even with his claimed focus on history, W.’s solid and lengthy introduction defines his task as theological rather than histori- cal, framed by his evangelical assumptions about revelation, inspiration, illumination, and a narrow canon. That the Apocrypha are doctrinally false (according to Reformers) is, for W., sufficient to exclude them from his OT theology (38). He critiques liberal and fundamentalist approaches, and claims that traditionalist interpretations (i.e., Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Jewish) “many times nullify the word of God” (76). Only an evangelical approach “stands under the bible” (77), he claims, though without critical defense. He clearly defines his audience as evangelical and not fundamentalist, even though he gives much at- tention to fundamentalist concerns such as whether biblical creation is science (194–203). In parts 2 and 3, W. identifies primary OT themes (gifts), such as the land, warfare, the spirit, and covenant, and often traces a theme through the OT into the New. His use of critical methods, such as narrative criti- cism (plot, point of view, etc.) and poetics (Leitwort, motif, etc.), are well selected and executed, though he expresses some tension: “My conserva- tive understanding of the narrative’s historical credibility stands in opposi- tion to that of historical criticism” (95).

Just before he leaves for Lourdes, Bernard learns that his wife is preg- nant. However, he is not told that this pregnancy could put her life at risk—and that doctors are suggesting an abortion. While researching for his report on Lourdes, Bernard comes across the pages of an old family manuscript. The manuscript was written by his ancestor, Henri Guillaumet, a positivist scientist and non- believer who met Bernadette at Lourdes in 1858, a meeting which profoundly affected Henri and forced him to reconsider the miracles performed following the apparitions of the Madonna of Lourdes. One of the most important miracles Giullaumet had to reconsider was the healing of his wife Claire, who had been on her death bed as a result of tuberculosis, and was completely restored by the miraculous waters of the grotto in which Bernadette saw the Our Lady.

St Thomas More Catholic Parish & School Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time u October 13, 2019 “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Luke 17:17-18 What’s Inside: Seminarian’s Reflection Judaism to Catholicism Retired & Infirm Priests’ Collection SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2019 seminarian’s reflection God still surprises me. After being a seminarian for six years, I wish I could tell you that I fully expect God to be at work everyday in the lives of those he loves. However, I reluctantly admit that it still surprises me when, while busy minding my own business, God dumbfounds me with his action in my life. The most recent instance of this was on the STM Catholic eighth grade school retreat. The surprise came when, after sharing his testimony, Patrick Smith, our assistant principal, had a moment of inspiration. He challenged the students, “Think of one person in this class who you respect but aren’t very close to. What do you respect about them?” After a deliberation-filled pause, he then threw down the gauntlet: “Now tell that person!” Sitting in the back of the room, I instantly recoiled. Thoughts of, “This won’t work!” and “They’ll treat it as a joke!” sprung to my mind. Memories of my painfully self-conscious eighth grade self supported my skepticism. However, what happened next was truly inspiring. Many eighth graders instantly jumped to their feet and went straight to affirm their admiree. Before long, the room was a mob of affirmations, hugs, healing and many tears.

  • Jesus Seemed to Say That He Inspired Me to Read the Book on Purgatory Because I Can See That I Can Help Save Them, Even If Not Now, Later, Through Prayer
1 Heart to Heart is a sequel to Face to Face, excerpts from my spiritual journal that ended with May 10, 2003. I cut off that book because I had reached the turning point of moving from the college I was working at to living fully at the retreat center I had been visiting on long weekends. Let me begin this part of my journal with this quotation from St. Therese of Lisieux: “I think that the Heart of my Spouse is mine alone, just as mine is His alone, and I speak to Him then in the solitude of this delightful heart to heart, while waiting to contemplate Him one day face to face.” [Fr. Bro, St. Therese of Lisieux (San Francisco: Ignatius Press, 2003) p. 79-80] May 18, 2003 A lovely poem by my daughter, Carla: Laudate My trees are huddled tightly in their groups – They’re listening. They wait for the chirroo Of this last sunrise. Every trunk is full But they are not departing. They have roots. The first slight golden drops begin to fall Like floating carpets. When the wrecking ball Smacks thicker waters from this praying sky, This bleeding sky, this cracking sky, then I Will have to lift my feet. Because I can, I cross myself and mumble my amens Just as the egg breaks. I can almost hear The willing barks receive the dawn. “No fear: We’ll follow,” whisper leaves so I might know Their promise to remember when I go. May 20, 2003 Today I had a thirst to just live with Jesus as an anchorite, to stay in my hut as much as possible for the year and not leave except when necessary.
