Just before he leaves for Lourdes, Bernard learns that his wife is preg- nant. However, he is not told that this pregnancy could put her life at risk—and that doctors are suggesting an abortion. While researching for his report on Lourdes, Bernard comes across the pages of an old family manuscript. The manuscript was written by his ancestor, Henri Guillaumet, a positivist scientist and non- believer who met Bernadette at Lourdes in 1858, a meeting which profoundly affected Henri and forced him to reconsider the miracles performed following the apparitions of the Madonna of Lourdes. One of the most important miracles Giullaumet had to reconsider was the healing of his wife Claire, who had been on her death bed as a result of tuberculosis, and was completely restored by the miraculous waters of the grotto in which Bernadette saw the Our Lady. This intriguing film uses the pages of the manuscript to trace the stories of three lives— Bernadette, Henry and Bernard, three characters whose lives intertwine as they pursue parallel journeys according to the designs of Providence. Directed by Lodovico Gasparini (St. John Bosco, Don Matteo), stars Alessandro Gassman, Angele Osinski, and Sydne Rome, and written by Vittorio Messori (The Ratzinger Report). Aurora was hoping to see her before she died. She gath- ers her children around the picture of Bakhita and tells them of the incredible life of the woman that had raised her as her nanny. Born in a village in Sudan, kidnapped by sla- vers, often beaten and abused, and later sold to Federico Marin, a Venetian merchant, Bakhita then came to Italy and became the nanny servant of Federico’s daughter, Aurora, who had lost her mother at birth. She is treated as an outcast by the peasants and the other servants due to her black skin and African background, but Bakhita is kind and generous to others. Bakhita gradual- ly comes closer to God with the help of the kind village priest, and embraces the Catholic faith. She requests to join the order of Canossian sisters, but Marin doesn’t want to give her up as his servant, treating her almost as his property. This leads to a moving court case that raised an uproar which impacts Bakhita’s freedom and ultimate decision to become a nun. Pope John Paul II declared her a saint in the year 2000. Directed by Giacamo Campiotti (St. Giuseppe Moscati, Doctor Zhivago) and stars Fatou Kine Boye, Stefania Rocca, Fabio Sartor, Ettore Bassi, SPECIAL FEATURES and Francesco Salvi. The Empire perse- cuted the Christians and was eventually con- verted. The Barbarians sacked Rome, but were converted too. How did the religion of Love manage to sur- vive against paganism and barbarianism? How did the first Christians live? Who were their most terrible enemies: idols, lions, Jews... or her- etics? How did they defend their faith? How did they propagate it? The blood of the martyrs was the seed for new Christians. But after the persecutions of the Romans and the barbarian invasions came another grave danger for the new religion: here- sies… They would not be lethal. On the contrary, they provided the opportunity to define the essential truths of Christian faith, consolidating the roots of a millennial Church. This in-depth new film series produced in Europe explores this amazing story of the witness of the early Christians and the spread of Christianity. In English and Spanish languages. The monastery, found- ed in 1878, is home to the nuns of the Discalced Order of Carmelites, who lead a cloistered life dedicated to prayer, work and contemplation, rarely leaving the monastery except to visit a doctor or dentist. Silence is maintained through- out the day with the exception of two periods of recreation. A highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning documentary, No Greater Love follows in the wake of the great success of a similar film, Into Great Silence, as it gives a unique insight into this closed world of these nuns where the modern world’s materialism is rejected; they have no television, radio or newspapers. The film inter- weaves a year in the life of the monastery with the daily rhythms of Divine Office and work. Centered on Holy Week, it follows a year in which a novice is professed and one of the older nuns dies. Though mainly a meditational film, there are several interviews with the nuns, which offer insights into their lives, faith, moments of doubt and their belief in the power of prayer in SPECIAL FEATURES the heart of the community. For 40 years, Brother André Bessette of the Congregation of Holy Cross welcomed peo- ple at the door and became known as a miraculous healer. God’s Doorkeeper looks at the heart and legacy of Brother André —as a man of prayer, of hospitality, and of compas- sion; a man who draws people in to experience a God who is love. On October 17, 2010, Brother André became the first male Canadian-born saint and the first saint for the Congregation of Holy Cross. He is living proof that “it is with the smallest brushes that the divine artist paints the most beautiful pictures.” The film features interviews from Montreal, Rome, and the United States—with people who knew him and others who continue Brother André’s work today. It also includes footage of the Beatification and Canonization ceremonies in Rome and the celebrations in Canada, with footage of the unforgettable events of Brother André’s road to sainthood. Tom’s reflection The Nun The Story of a Carmelite Vocation his is an award-winning documentary that tells the beautiful story Tof Marta, a young Catholic woman in Sweden and her counter- cultural choice to follow a calling to become a cloistered Carmelite nun, and to live her life for God alone. Documentary filmmaker Maud Nycander followed Marta and her family for ten years to tell the story of her vocation, and the Carmelite convent made a unique exception to its strict regulations by allowing the filmmaker to meet with and interview Marta both before and after her five-year postulant period. The Carmelite convent in Glumslöv in the south of Sweden is normally closed to outsiders. Marta comes from a large Catholic family, one of nine children, a close-knit family who live on a farm in Sweden. Marta lived a very happy family life, and had an active social life with many friends in school, but yet felt the call to leave all that for the challenging life of a cloistered contemplative Carmelite nun.

For Use February 6-7, 5th Sunday Ordinary time (B) Stewardship by the Book Like St. Paul in the second reading, the good steward can say, AI do all that I do for the sake of the gospel in the hope of having a share in it=s blessings.@ Vocation View The afflicted Job in the Old Testament thinks that his life is like dust in the wind - - there is nothing to it. Sorrow and sadness strike many people; only those who have been afflicted, who know sorrow themselves, are poor enough to minister to others. Stewardship Reflections “Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed…He told them, ‘Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.’” - MARK 1:35, 38 In today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to do all that God wishes - healing the sick and preaching. But before He begins, Jesus makes time to be alone with God in prayer. It is through prayer, spending time with God, that we find the strength to do what He wishes us to do. Be sure to find time every day to be with God. Family Perspective In today’s gospel Jesus went to the “house of Andrew and Simon” to relax but discovered that “Simon’s mother-in-law was very ill. Like Jesus we come home to relax but are confronted with problems. Take a tip from Andrew and Simon who “told Jesus about it at once.” Prayers for Priests Saint of the Week- Saint Josephine Bakhita-Feast Day February 8 St.

Remembering St. Josephine Bakhita and all Victims of Human Trafficking “Human Trafficking is a crime against humanity. We must unite our efforts to free victims and stop this crime that’s become even more aggressive, that threatens not just individuals, but the foundational values of society, international security and laws, the economy, families and communities.” — Pope Francis Each person forced into slavery has a personal story … a story of struggles, hopes and dreams. Below is the story of St. Josephine Bakhita, a survivor of human trafficking. St. Josephine Bakhita was born in southern Sudan in 1869. As a young girl, she was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Sold and resold in the markets of El Obeid and Karthoum, she was treated brutally by her captors. She did not remember the name she was given by her parents. Bakhita, which means “fortunate one,” was the name given to her by her kidnappers. In 1883, she was bought by an Italian diplomat who sent her to Italy to work as a maid for the daughter of a family friend studying with the Canossian Daughters of Charity. It was there that Bakhita came to know the God whom she had experienced in her heart without knowing. In 1890, she was baptized and received the name Josephine. Later, the Italian family came to take their “property” back to Africa. Josephine expressed her desire to stay. When the family insisted she go, she remained firm, later writing: “I am sure the Lord gave me strength at that moment.” With the support of the superior of the Canossian Sisters and the Cardinal of Venice, she won her freedom and later entered the novitiate.

On our pilgrimage through Greece, we will follow the footsteps of Paul to discover firsthand the sights, sounds, and feelings that he may have had as he established the Church in this enchanting, ancient land. As we behold the timeless holy places and contemplate the exemplary life of Paul who came not in word only, and not in affliction only, but also in power and with much assurance and great joy to admonish those he served, to join them in giving thanks to God and to remember without ceasing… great works of faith, labours of love and patience of hope in Jesus Christ (I Thess 1), we will renew our commitment to the roots of our Catholic faith. The masses and meditations we celebrate along the way will draw us together as a community, and will remind us of our blessings and the call to stewardship as followers of Jesus Christ.

  • THE QUEER FEET G. K. Chesterton If You Meet a Member of That Select
THE QUEER FEET G. K. Chesterton If you meet a member of that select club, "The Twelve True Fishermen," entering the Vernon Hotel for the annual club dinner, you will observe, as he takes off his overcoat, that his evening coat is green and not black. If (supposing that you have the star-defying audacity to address such a being) you ask him why, he will probably answer that he does it to avoid being mistaken for a waiter. You will then retire crushed. But you will leave behind you a mystery as yet unsolved and a tale worth telling. If (to pursue the same vein of improbable conjecture) you were to meet a mild, hard-working little priest, named Father Brown, and were to ask him what he thought was the most singular luck of his life, he would probably reply that upon the whole his best stroke was at the Vernon Hotel, where he had averted a crime and, perhaps, saved a soul, merely by listening to a few footsteps in a passage. He is perhaps a little proud of this wild and wonderful guess of his, and it is possible that he might refer to it. But since it is immeasurably unlikely that you will ever rise high enough in the social world to find "The Twelve True Fishermen," or that you will ever sink low enough among slums and criminals to find Father Brown, I fear you will never hear the story at all unless you hear it from me. The Vernon Hotel at which The Twelve True Fishermen held their annual dinners was an institution such as can only exist in an oligarchical society which has almost gone mad on good manners.
