OR CONSIDER USING OFFERTORY ENVELOPES

Why should I use offertory envelopes? Because in a very materialistic world, followers of Jesus get distracted, so we need reminders. Envelopes help us organize and carefully think out our manner of giving to the Lord. Without envelopes, we tend to reach into our pockets at the last minute to pull out left-overs, what we do not really need. Thus, we easily end up giving to a waiter at a restaurant (the 15 to 20% tip), more than we give to the Lord each week.

When something is special and important, we usually wrap the gift up. Using envelopes helps us “wrap up” our gift for Jesus each week, making it more beautiful and meaningful. Call the Parish Office to get set up to receive offertory envelopes. PARISH/DIOCESAN ANNOUNCEMENTS

CEMETERY NOTES from the Pastor — 2nd notice

With more and more projects completed, I now have the me to turn to the cemetery and look at how it is run and kept up and organized. I remind you of a policy that was put in place even before my arrival: Benches set up by gravesites are not allowed. This is not to be mean-spirited but it makes cung the grass in the cemetery more difficult. It is a huge expense to keep the ceme- tery dy and eliminang unnecessary hurdles will help to keep the cost down. If your family has a bench by a gravesite, it must be removed by July 30th. Second, if graves are painted, they must be painted white only. No other color is allowed. The ceme- tery is a solemn and sacred place for prayer and meditaon and we have to insist that the ambient reflects this purpose. Finally, there are sll several crypts available in the mausoleum which must be sold. I can speak from the experience of burying both par- ents that having such “spots” already established upon the death of a loved one makes the funeral preparaon experience much less stressful. Call the Parish Office for details and assistance. PARISH ORGANIZATIONS PRAYER APOSTOLATES

HOW THE BLACK PLAGUE CHANGED THE “” PRAYER

Christians added “pray for us now and at the hour of our death” in the midst of the Black Plague.

The “Hail Mary” prayer that Christians have been praying for centuries is composed of two main parts. The first part of the prayer is derived from the Annunciation, when the angel Ga- briel greeted Mary by saying, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” (Luke 1:28) The next part of the prayer is taken from the Visitation, when Elizabeth greeted Mary with the words, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” (Luke 1:42)

At first the prayer was known as the “Salutation of the Blessed Virgin,” and only consisted of the two verses joined together. However, during the Black Plague (also known as the “Black Death”) the prayer was further developed and a second part was added to it. This second part (“Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death”) is believed by many to have been added during the plague to ask for the Blessed Mother’s protection from the fatal disease.

Venerable Fulton J. Sheen explains this origin in his book The World’s First Love. Since it seizes upon the two decisive moments of life: “now” and “at the hour of our death,” it suggests the spontaneous outcry of people in a great calamity. The Black Death, which rav- aged all Europe and wiped out one-third of its population, prompted the faithful to cry out to the Mother of Our Lord to protect them at a time when the present moment and death were al- most one.

An expert in Marian devotion, Fr. Donald H. Calloway, confirms this conclusion in his book Champions of the Rosary and explains how, “After the Black Death, the second half of the Hail Mary began to appear in the breviaries of religious communities, especially those of the Mercedarians, Camaldolese, and Franciscans … the people of the 14th century greatly needed the ‘hope-filled’ dimension of the second half of the Hail Mary prayer.” The prayer took various forms during this bleak period in Europe, but was officially recog- nized after the publication of the Catechism of the Council of Trent and the full prayer was then included in the Roman Breviary of 1568.

PRAYER AGAINST THE CORONAVIRUS

Lord Jesus Christ, our Divine Physician, we ask you to guard and protect us from Cornavirus COVID –19 and all serious illness. For all that have died from it, have mercy; for those that are ill now, bring healing. For those searching for a remedy, enlighten them; for medical caregivers helping the sick, strengthen and shield them. For those working to contain the spread, grant them success; for those afraid, grant peace. May your precious blood be our defense and salvation. By your grace, may you turn the evil of disease into moments of consolation and hope. May we always fear the contagion of sin more than any illness. We abandon ourselves to your infinite mercy. AMEN. FROM THE HEART OF THE PASTOR Keeping you informed

A new face in the sacristy on weekends: Several weeks ago Mrs. Jeanette Broussard, a long time St. Anne sacristan, expressed to me that she felt the time was ripe for her to terminate her sacristan duties. Ms. Jeanette has been of invalu- able assistance to me and her dedication to St. Anne for so many years has been exemplary. After a little discussion, Ms. Jeanette agreed that she would continue to assist at the weekday Masses, for which I am very grateful. Thus, be- ginning next weekend, we will have a new sacristan for weekend duties, weddings and funerals. Mr. Brad Thomassee will now serve in this capacity while also taking over some cleaning duties in the Parish Hall. I worked with Brad dur- ing my time at Fatima and know him to be a very religious and dedicated man. I am happy that he is now going to wor- ship at St. Anne which is certainly appropriate as this is his territorial Church Parish. I’m sure you will see him fre- quently and will welcome him to the St. Anne staff. His presence, particularly at funerals and weddings, will now al- low me to have a server at these respective liturgies.

With this announcement it seems appropriate for me to comment on the presence of several Fatima families now at St. Anne. Most of these same families actually live in the territorial parish of St. Anne; Brad lives only five minutes away. For one reason or another, they did not feel called to worship at St. Anne in the past, now they do. Every new member of our Parish has something unique and special to contribute to the building up of the Kingdom of God. So, again, wel- come to Brad and to all new parishioners who have recently joined St. Anne Parish. You are now part of a wonderful group of long- standing parishioners who, I have no doubt, will capture your heart as they have captured mine.

An attempt at sanctuary/sacristy curtains: As the saying goes, “A+ for effort.” My attempt to mimic the look that is often found in the Churches of Europe did not go as planned. The return air flow makes hanging curtains in front of the doors leading to/from the sanctuary and sacristy practically impossible. My plan was to hang curtains to allow us to keep the sanctuary/sacristy doors open during the prep time before Masses. Having to close them each time we enter the sanctuary gets noisy and complicated. But all is not lost; the curtains will still be hung. They will hang in a different manner than I had planned but will certainly add some color and formality to the sanctuary area.

Prayerful sympathy: Last week, on June 17th, Fr. Jude Halphen, who has regularly celebrated Masses here on Thurs- day evenings, lost his father, Mr. Dewey Halphen. Mr. Halphen was 93 years old. The funeral was last Saturday; our Saturday morning confessions prevented me from attending the funeral. Let us remember the Halphen family in prayer and in a particular way let us remember Fr. Jude. He is a huge help here at St. Anne and I am thankful to have his help.

A diocesan announcement: At the time of this writing you will soon hear that Deacon Ed Boustany will be officially assigned to St. Anne Church. He has been present to us for several months but it will soon become official. Similarly, Deacon Cody Miller will be assigned to St. Anne Church. Deacon Cody lives near-by and has asked to be assigned here. His work as a deacon primarily involves the Apostolate, traveling throughout the Country evange- lizing. Every deacon, however, must be connected to a Church Parish and thus Deacon Cody will be connected to ours. You will probably see him in a very limited capacity due to his Legion of Mary work, likely once a month at one of the weekend Masses. Of course, we also have the service of Deacon Douglas Hebert who is retired. None of our deacons are in paid positions. They give with serving hearts, for which we should all be grateful. And let’s not forget to pray for the two men from our Parish in the diaconate formation program — Grant Broussard and Craig Levet.

An announcement about our future: I will soon make a few important announcements regarding our future and how various maintenance issues will be addressed. I’m sure you are aware that there are numerous problems, not only in the Church but also in the rectory. I have been regularly meeting with someone helping me to come up with an orderly plan to fix the litany of issues in the most economical and efficient way. In my on-going attempt to be as transparent as possible, I’ll have details for you very soon.

One year anniversary with you: This Wednesday, July 1st, will mark the completion of one year with you. It has been a rewarding year, addressing several challenges and seeing them to fruition. I’ve met some wonderful people along the way, have a great and cooperative staff, and my heart is at peace. Change is not easy, for a parish or a new pastor, but I can see a huge difference just in the manner in which we pray. Others repeatedly tell me the same. (Daily Mass attendance is inspirational.) There is beauty and reverence and a greater sensitivity to the sacred. This is no small ac- complishment, and YOU have made it happen; for this, I thank you! As I reminded you last weekend in my homily, “It’s all good!” God love you and have a safe and happy 4th of July!

CONFESSIONS for the time being

Social distancing restrictions prevent confession times just before Masses. Thanks for your understanding.

SATURDAY MORNINGS: 10am to 11am in Church.

CONFESSION PROCEDURE TO BETTER ENSURE THE SAFETY AND HEALTH OF ALL

FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW:

1. When entering the confession line, follow the directions of the designated coordinator who will line up penitents according to norms of social distancing.

2. When it is your time to enter the confessional, the coordinator will open the door to the confessional for you. Please DO NOT TOUCH the door knob or handle.

3. When entering the confessional you will note a YELLOW LINE on the carpet behind the confession- al screen. STAND ON THAT LINE to confess your sins. Do not cross the line. There is no kneeler or face to face option.

4. When you complete your confession, Fr. will give you counsel (if needed) and will ask that you pray the Act of Contrition. You may pray an Act of Contrition you are familiar with or you may pray the following:

LORD HAVE MERCY ON ME, A SINNER. I RESOLVE TO SIN NO MORE.

5. When you have completed your confession, wait for the coordinator to open the door for you to exit. Again, do not touch the door knob. The coordinator will know to open the door by noting a return to the green light outside of the confessional door.

Thank you for understanding these directives and for your cooperation.

FACIAL COVERING AT ST. ANNE MASSES

In an attempt to be pastorally sensitive to those who favor the wearing of facial covering because they feel more comfortable and safer in such a setting, while at the same time trying to be sensitive to those who strug- gle with facial covering (for various reasons), St. Anne now upholds the following policy, which began Janu- ary 8th.

The Saturday 4pm Mass and the Sunday 8am Mass are Masses in which facial covering is manda- tory.

The Sunday 11am Mass and the Sunday 5pm Mass are Masses in which facial covering is strongly encouraged but not mandatory.

WHAT ABOUT WEEKDAYS? Facial covering for weekday Masses is also optional particularly since the crowd numbers are fewer, thus social distancing can be more vigilantly carried out. However, the wearing of facial covering remains strongly encouraged during weekday Masses.

POPE ADDS THREE NEW TITLES TO MARY IN THE LITANY OF LORETO

Comfort of Migrants and Mother of Mercy will take their place among the other titles of devotion given to Jesus’ Mother.

The ancient Litany of Loreto, featuring a list of devotional titles of the Virgin Mary, will now have three new invocations, as Francis has decided to include: “Mother of Mercy,” “Mother of Hope,” and “Comfort of Migrants.”

While some spiritual writers claim that the litany can be traced back to St. Gregory the Great or even to the Apostles, most historians believe that the Litany of Loreto was composed in the late 15th to early 16th century. The new titles were announced in a letter June 20 from Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, to the bishops’ conferences around the world. The letter includes the placement in the litany for the three new titles: “Mater misericordiae” (Mother of mercy) should be placed after “Mater Ecclesi- ae” (Mother of the Church) “Mater spei” (Mother of hope) should follow “Mater divinae gratiae” (Mother of divine grace) “Solacium migrantium” (Comfort of migrants) should follow “Refugium pecca- torum” (Refuge of sinners)

It is believed that the litany was initially adopted at the miraculous in Loreto, It- aly, where tradition claims the original house of the Virgin Mary was transported. And from there, it spread around the world.

THE LITANY OF LORETO is prayed here at St. Anne at the end of the Ro- sary for wayward loved ones following the First Saturday 8:30am Mass.

Our Lady said: “...I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy communion, recite five dec- ades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on fifteen mysteries of the Ro- sary, with the intention of making reparation to me.”

The observance of the Five First Saturdays in honor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is intended to make rep- aration for the sins of humanity. This devotion was revealed by the Blessed Virgin to the Three Shepherd Children of Fatima, Lucia dos Santos and her two cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto— to whom she ap- peared at Fatima, Portugal in 1917, from May through October. On June 13, 1917, Our Lady specifically stat- ed in speaking to Lucia: “Jesus wants to make use of you to make me known and loved. He wants to estab- lish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart.”

Our Lady repeated this in the July 13th apparition when, after showing the children a vision of hell, she said: “You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace.”

THE HISTORY OF THE PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION PASSED THIS WEEKEND

In 1871, Pope Pius IX formalized the practice of lay members of the Church and "other persons of good will" – providing financial support directly to the Papal Treasury. Normally, contributions go to the local parish or diocese, who then provide contributions to support higher level offices. Collec- tions for Peter's Pence, however, go directly to Rome. Pius IX approved this practice in the encycli- cal Saepe venerabilis, issued on 5 August 1871. The money collected is today used by the pope for his charities throughout the world.

The collection is taken each year on the Sunday closest to 29 June, the Solemnity of the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul in the liturgical calendar.
