(I Thess 5: 11, 13). On our pilgrimage through Greece, we will follow the footsteps of Paul to discover firsthand the sights, sounds, and feelings that he may have had as he established the Church in this enchanting, ancient land. As we behold the timeless holy places and contemplate the exemplary life of Paul who came not in word only, and not in affliction only, but also in power and with much assurance and great joy to admonish those he served, to join them in giving thanks to God and to remember without ceasing… great works of faith, labours of love and patience of hope in Jesus Christ (I Thess 1), we will renew our commitment to the roots of our Catholic faith. The masses and meditations we celebrate along the way will draw us together as a community, and will remind us of our blessings and the call to stewardship as followers of Jesus Christ.

The Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven, in- formally known as the Assumption, according to the be- liefs of the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, and parts of Anglicanism, was the bodily tak- ing up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. The Catholic Church teaches as dogma that the Vir- gin Mary “having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory”.[1] This doctrine was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950, in the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus by exercising papal infallibility.[2] While the Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church believe in the Dormition of the Theotokos, which is the same as the Assumption,[3] the alleged physical death of Mary has not been dogmatically defined. In Munificentissimus Deus (item 39) Pope Pius XII pointed to the Book of Genesis (3:15) as scriptural sup- port for the dogma in terms of Mary’s victory over sin and death as also reflected in 1 Corinthians 15:54: “then shall come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory”.[4][5][6] In the churches that observe it, the Assumption is a major feast day, commonly celebrated on August 15.

Jesuits^ Huguenots^ and the Apocalypse: The Origins of America ï First French Book EVAN HAEFELI AND OWEN STANWOOD N MAY 1690 a Boston printer published the first Erench- language book in North America. The book, which ap- I peared in spite of the fact that there were few Erench speak- ers on hand to read it, was pubhshed under the auspices of no less a personage than Cotton Mather (1663-1728). He wrote a pref- ace endorsing the work written by the Huguenot minister Eze- chiel Carré (c.i66o-after 1697). The tract itself. Echantillon de la Doctrine que les Jésuites enségnent aus Sauvages du Nouveau Monde ['A Sample of the Doctrine that the Jesuits teach to the Savages of the New World'], is something of an anomaly in colonial print history.' An exposé of the techniques used by Jesuits in New Erance to convert Native Americans to Christianity, it denounced what the author saw as underhanded methods of spreading a false religion. Scholars have long been aware of its existence, but they have given little notice to it or to other foreign language books I. The tract was published by Samuel Green in Boston. The only surviving copy is at the American Antiquarian Society. The book was in the personal collection of the Soci- ety's founder, the nineteenth-century printer Isaiah Thomas. EVAN HAEFELI and OWEN STANWOOD are assistant professors of history: Haefeli at Columbia University and Stanwood at the Catholic University of America. They would like to thank Allan Greer, David Silverman, Caroline Sloat, and an anonymous reviewer for their helpful comments and criticisms.

Pilgrimage Guide to Italy March 24-April 4, 2015 For John & Mary Smith By: Bret Thoman, OFS St. Francis Pilgrimages www.stfrancispilgrimages.com Pilgrimage, not tourism… 10-12 days: Rome, San Giovanni Rotondo, Mont Sant’Angelo, Lanciano, Loreto, Manopello, Siena, Ovieto, and Cascia Suggested itinerary: March 24: depart New York March 25: arrive Rome; afternoon- visit NAC; overnight Rome March 26: morning: papal Audience; afternoon: basilicas; overnight Rome March 27: morning: Rome-SGR; afternoon: visit SGR; overnight SGR March 28: morning: Monte Sant’Angelo; afternoon: SGR; overnight SGR March 29: morning: depart: Lanciano; afternoon: Manoppello, Loreto; overnight Loreto March 30: morning: Loreto; afternoon: depart for Assisi; overnight Assisi March 31: full day: Assisi; overnight Assisi April 1: full day: Siena; overnight Assisi April 2: full day: Cascia/Norcia; overnight Assisi April 3: Orvieto/overnight in Rome near Fiumicino April 4: return home Notes: Daily Mass: there will be ample opportunities in any of the churches along your itinerary; however, the Masses will all be in Italian. The only exception might be in Assisi where you could possibly join an English group at the Basilica of St. Francis; or in Rome, at the NAC. I know you didn’t have Assisi on your list of places and is not critical on your itinerary, since you’ve been there before; however, it is a great central location to make day trips; plus, the drivers we use live there, so you wouldn’t have to pay their overnight expenses. I verified the opening times at the church of Manoppello to be: 6.00am-12.30pm; 3.00pm-6.30pm Suggested Pilgrimage Itinerary March 24-April 4, 2014 Monday, March 24, 2014 Depart New York-Rome In Rome March 25-27: Before going to Rome, I recommend purchasing a Catholic guidebook on the main Christian churches while you are there.
