    Introduction In their thirty years together, the Grateful Dead forever altered the way in which popular music is performed, recorded, heard, marketed, and shared. Founding members Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and Bob Weir took the name Grateful Dead in 1965, after incarnations as Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions and The Warlocks. Despite significant changes in the band’s lineup, including the addition of Mickey Hart and the death of Ron McKernan, the band played together until Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995. From the beginning, the Grateful Dead distinguished themselves by their preference for live performance, musical and business creativity, and an unprecedented dedication to their fans. Working musicians rather than rock stars, the Dead developed a distinctive sound while performing as latter-day American troubadours, bringing audio precision to their live performances and the spontaneity of live performances to their studio work. Side-stepping the established rules of the recording industry, the Dead took control of the production and distribution of their music. With a similar business savvy, they introduced strategic marketing innovations that strengthened the bond with their fans. This exhibition, the first extensive presentation of materials from the Grateful Dead Archive housed at the University of California, Santa Cruz, testifies to the enduring impact of the Grateful Dead and provides a glimpse into the social upheavals and awakenings of the late twentieth century—a transformative period that profoundly shaped our present cultural landscape. Allen (guest post)* Concert poster Jerry Garcia On the afternoon of May 8, 1977, a sunny 60-degree Sunday, the Grateful Dead were in town-- Ithaca, New York, a bohemian college enclave on the southern tip of Cayuga Lake in the central part of the state--to perform at Cornell University. The campus was abuzz, an excitement that had been brewing since last semester when Mike McEvoy, a Cornell Concert Commission member who would later work for rock promoter Bill Graham, booked the Dead. “It took a lot of arm-twisting over many months,” McEvoy remembers. A handful of Cornell students wearing red-and-white Concert Commission jerseys, ancillary security for tonight's show inside Barton Hall, the school's archaic athletic facility opened in 1915, merrily strode across the bustling campus commons on their way to the gym, dodging Frisbees being tossed by sun-loving classmates wearing shorts and sandals. The warm weather soon gave way to blustery conditions, with temperatures plummeting into the low 40s and sleet and rain falling. Inexplicably, the doors to Barton Hall (capacity 5,000) remained closed, forcing fans to wait outside in the cold. When only one gym door was finally opened, frustrated concert-goers shoved forward. Like clay being forced through the opening of a Play Dough toy, the lava-like flow of bodies was funneled into a tiny, rectangular opening, with fans dangerously pressed against the door frames and the glass panels in the gym's closed doors.

The first disc picks up the second set from Providence three songs in, featuring a short jam that leads into what many E have labeled the most extraordinary live version of “China Cat Sunflower” ever recorded, complete with a sublime transition D (“Mud Love Buddy Jam” a.k.a. “Mind Left Body Jam”) into “I Know You Rider.” The T revelatory moments continue throughout the Providence set, highlighted by a dazzling, 15-minute “Spanish Jam.” But the second set of the Boston show—which appears here complete, beginning on CD two after a superb encore performance of “Eyes of the World” from Providence—is the one that has passed into legend among Dead fans (that it begins A with a rare performance of Phil Lesh and Ned Lagin’s electronic music piece “Seastones” gives you an idea of what an adventurous night this was).

Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, he graduated from Carleton University with a BA in history, going on to earn a BFA in film studies from Concordia University and an MA in film archiving from the University of East Anglia. He first went to work for the Grateful Dead in 1999, working under Vault Archivist Dick Latvala to catalog the band’s video holdings; when Latvala died that year, Lemieux was hired to be his successor. Lemieux has overseen and produced dozens of archival releases by the Grateful Dead and several by Jerry Garcia; the Dead’s newest archival release series, Dave’s Picks, honors his work. In addition to his duties for the band, Lemieux hosts a daily radio show, Today in Grateful Dead History, broadcast on Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio, and serves as editor of the newsletter of the Association of Moving Image Archivists.
