The laxonomic status of two species of Hftrrvpsytla in Hawaii was clarified after confusion arose because of inadequate identification keys and the collection of mixed popu lations from a common host plant. A third species of llrtrmfisylla was also discovered for the first time in Hawaii (hiring January 1986. Most range tests were conducted with nine leguminous plants, lletemfisylla rubana Crawford, a senior synonym of //. inetia (Sulc), completed its development on leucaena (Ijnuarna UucocephaUt (l.am.) de Wit) and monkeypod (Samanea saman (Jacq.) Mem); //. huasachae Caldwell on koa (Acacia koa Gray), monkeypcxl, and slender mimosa (Desmanlhus virgatus (I.) Willd.); and //. fusca Crawford on klu {Acacia farnesiana (1..) Willcl.). Clarification of the taxonomic status of two HeteropsyUa spp. present in Hawaii was made recently. The close resemblance of the species within this genus, in addition to the collection of mixed populations from a common host plant, led to some early confusion. At that time, the need for revision of the HeteropsyUa group precluded their identifications. Later, with the revision work completed (Brown 1985, Burckhardt 1986, 1987) and with assistance of collaborators R. Brown and I. Hodkinson2, D. Burckhardt3, D. Hollis4, and D. Miller and L. Russell5, the determinations of two HeteropsyUa spp., H. cubana Crawford and H. huasachae Caldwell, were made. A third species, H. fusca Crawford, was later identified by I. Hodkinson, R. Brown, and D. Hollis. A summary of the three psyllids in Hawaii is presented below. -
Site Synopsis
SITE SYNOPSIS SITE NAME: CLOONLOUM MORE BOG NHA SITE CODE: 002307 Cloonloum More Bog NHA is situated approximately 5 km south-west of Tulla, mainly in the townlands of Cloonloum More and Clooncool in Co. Clare. The site comprises a raised bog that includes both areas of high bog and cutover bog. The north-western margin of the site is bounded by a road, while the other margins are bounded by areas of cutover and grassland. The raised bog consists of one crescent-shaped lobe. There is an absence of permanent pools and hummocks/hollows on the high bog and there are large areas of cutover. This raised bog is of particular interest as it is one of the few remaining raised bogs in the county. A small lake, Lough Gara, is included at the south of the site. Much of the high bog vegetation is typical of raised bogs in Ireland, consisting of Ling Heather (Calluna vulgaris), Cross-leaved Heath (Erica tetralix), White Beak- sedge (Rhynchospora alba) and Deergrass (Scirpus cespitosus). Bog-rosemary (Andromeda polifolia) is found on this bog, although not in abundance. The bog moss (Sphagnum spp.) cover is quite variable, with species such as S. capillifolium, S. magellanicum and S. fuscum. The cutover areas surrounding the bog have become dominated by Purple Moor-grass (Molinia caerulea) and Gorse (Ulex europaeus). The lake at the south of the bog is surrounded by the Common Reed (Phragmites australis) and the Bulrush (Typha latifolia). Current landuse on the site consists of peat-cutting around the edge of the high bog, and the drainage associated with this. -

Common Name Koster's curse; it is also known as soapbush. Scientific Name Clidemia hirta. It was known previously as Clidemia elegans, Melastoma elegans. It is a member of the Melastomataceae. Distribution Widespread. Asia, East Africa, South and Southeast Asia, North, South and Central America, the Caribbean, Oceania. It is recorded from Australia, American Samoa, Fiji, Guam, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna. Koster's curse is native to much of tropical America. Invasiveness & Habitat An extremely important invasive weed, and especially a threat to Pacific islands. Koster's curse forms dense thickets that smother plantations, pastures and native vegetation, but it is also found in open grasslands, roadsides, open woodlands, banks of streams and rivers, forest margins and rainforests (Photo 1). The weed invades both disturbed and undisturbed areas, but it is especially problematic after storms, feral pig damage, landslides and fire. -

Under the Act, certain species of invasive plants are listed Australian Government legislation administered by the as ‘restricted’ biosecurity matter. Australian Department of Agriculture also applies to the import of all plants into Australia. Cornwall is under threat from agricultural improvement, abandonment and inappropriate management In the last fifty years 87% of the original area has been lost. Funher loss may be prevented by ~ examination of the factors that influence the plant community and how they may be manipulated by management. Thus the research described in this thesis addressed the soil conditions and the plant communities, with particular reference to phosphorus cycling. In 1992 a preliminary characterisation of soil nutrient and water conditions, and species composition was conducted on a pristine Culm grassland, an improved grassland and a formerly abandoned Culm grassland. -

These include: Antigonon leptopus Hooker & Arnott, Bidens pilosa L., Chromolaena odorata (L.) King and Robinson, Clidemia hirta (L.) D. Don, Coccinia grandis (L.) Voigt, Cuscuta sp., Eichhornia crassipes (Martius) Solms-Laubach, Imperata conferta (Presl) Ohwi, Ipomea spp., Lantana camara L., Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) deWit, Mikania scandens (L.) Willd., Mimosa (invisa) diplotricha C. Wright ex Suavalle, Miscanthus floridulus (Labill.) Warburg ex Schum. & Lauterb., Momordica charantia L., Panicum maximum Jacquin, Passiflora foetida L., Pennisetum polystachyon (L.) Schultes, Piper auritum Kunth, Pistia stratiotes L., Raphidophora aurea (Linden ex Andre), Spathodea campanulata P. de Beauvois, and Wedelia trilobata (L.) Hitche. The natural enemies introduced to suppress some of these species will be discussed. The accidental or intentional introductions for ornamental and other pur- poses of many herbs, shrubs, vines and trees have had a profound effect on the environment in Micronesia. These plants have become dominant in the ecosys- tem because of the absence of their natural enemies that normally keep them in check. Lee (1974) stated that invading plants originating in the New World out- number those from the Old World in Guam. He found the invading species of plants were 3.4% in limestone forest, 9.4% in ravine forest, 13.3% in savanna, 17.3% in strand and 32.4% in wetlands ecosystems. -

Nouvelle Caledonie, BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF THE LEUCAENA PSYLLlD HETEROPSYILA CUBANA IN NEW CALEDONIA Heteropsylla cubana Crawford (Hemiptera, Psyllidae) is native in tropical America and the Caribbean. It invaded the tropical Pacific islands, Australasia, and South-East Asia between 1984 and 1988. The lack of effective natural enemies of the psyllid in infested areas resulted in severe defoliation or death of the main host plant Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit and subsequent heavy economic losses. The parasite was detected in October, 1985 in New Caledonia, where leucaena is used extensively for cattle fodder and is appreciated for its role in soil conservation. Heavy impact on the host plant was soon observed. The coccinellid Olla v-nigrum Mulsant (Coleoptera) was introduced from Tahiti to control the psyllid. Few adults were released before the species became established: 282 adults from the first and second generations, between January and March, 1987 in Noumea and Paita areas. Olla has been found in these areas since May, 1987. The predator was present in most parts of New Caledonia in July, 1989. O. v-nigrum is known to feed on many different preys and to colonize various biotopes. At 25:rC the duration of the life cycle was 16.8 days (Egg 2.7; L1 2.1; L2 1.6; L3 1.9; lA 4.8; Ny 3.8). The rate of egg hatching was 0.76 for wild females; during the establishment of a life table based on 29 females, hatch rate was observed to decrease to 0.05 at the end of the oviposition period. -

D. Don, the anatomical study of the leaves and young stem and the phytochemical screening of the powder of the leaves. The leaves were collected monthly at Bosque Auguste de Saint-Hilaire, Conservation Unit on Campus II of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), Goiânia, Goiás, for 12 months. The specie was identified and a voucher specime deposited in the Herbarium of UFG (66 872- UFG). Morphoanatomical analysis was performed according to conventional techniques.
