DOSSIER Race and Immigration in Interwar France THE STRANGENESS OF FOREIGNERS Policing Migration and Nation in Interwar Marseille1 Mary Dewhurst Lewis Harvard University A man has all his moral value, according to us, only in the middle of his fellow cit- izens, in the city where he has always lived under the eyes of those citizens, watched, judged, and appreciated by them … but in general the displaced person, whom we call a vagabond, no longer has his moral value. – Adolphe Thiers2 In April 1924, Stefan X., a young man born in Marseille to Italian immigrants, was imprisoned for failing to honor an expulsion order dating from 1920.3 Protesting his imprisonment, Stefan invoked the French nationality law of 1889, which held that children born in France to foreign parents became French nationals upon reaching adulthood, provided that they remained res- idents of France at that time and did not repudiate their right to French nationality before a justice of the peace. Stefan, who had just passed his twenty-first birthday, argued that he was a citizen and that, as such, he could not be expelled from the country.4 Local officials argued quite the contrary. They pointed out that the origi- nal expulsion order, which had been triggered by Stefan’s theft of charcoal bri- quettes from a barge, was issued when Stefan was still a minor and could not French Politics, Culture & Society, Vol. 20, No. 3, Fall 2002 66 Mary Dewhurst Lewis yet exercise his birthright citizenship. Since he was supposed to have left France three years earlier, they argued, he could hardly claim to have legal res- idency there upon turning age twenty-one.

5.2.2002EN Official Journal of the European Communities C 32/21 COMMISSION OPINION of 30 January 2002 concerning the plan for the disposal of radioactive waste from the modification of the Trillo I Nuclear Power Station in Spain, in accordance with Article 37 of the Euratom Treaty (2002/C 32/10) (only the Spanish text is authentic) On 10 April 2001, the European Commission received from the Government of Spain, in accordance with Article 37 of the Euratom Treaty, general data relating to the plan for the disposal of radioactive waste from the modification of the Trillo I Nuclear Power plant. On the basis of these data and additional information subsequently provided by the Spanish Government, the Commission has considered that the plan concerned a modification to an existing plan on which an opinion had already been given. The Commission has further taken into consideration that the inter- mediate storage facility for irradiated fuel resulting from that modification could remain in operation after decommissioning and dismantling of the existing plant. Following consultation with the group of experts, the Commission has drawn up the following opinion: (a) The planned modification requires no changes to the existing authorised limits for gaseous and liquid discharges. (b) The planned modification has no consequences in relation to the solid radioactive waste arising from the operation of the existing plant. (c) The planned modification has no consequences in relation to the unplanned discharges of radioactive substances, which may follow an accident of the type and magnitude considered in the general data of the existing plan.

  • Mesozoic Salt Tectonics in the Toulon Belt, Eastern Provence : Inversion of a Salt-Rich Fault Zone
EGU21-3233 https://doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-egu21-3233 EGU General Assembly 2021 © Author(s) 2021. This work is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License. Mesozoic salt tectonics in the Toulon Belt, Eastern Provence : Inversion of a salt-rich fault zone Vincent Wicker and Mary Ford CRPG, University of Lorraine, Nancy, France Detailed structural and stratigraphic field mapping is used to reconstruct the Jurassic to Late Cretaceous diapiric and tectonic evolution of the Toulon Fault Zone, eastern Beausset Syncline and Toulon Belt, southern France, which represents the easternmost vestige of the Pyrenean orogen in Provence. This complex salt-rich area records a complete history from Jurassic-early Cretaceous subsidence and Aptian-Albian oblique rifting to Late Cretaceous Pyrenean-Provençal shortening. Halokinetic sequences and geometries were preserved principally on the northern flank of the Mont Caume salt diapir sourced from the Upper Triassic Keuper unit. Our field observations are best explained by a model where halokinetic activity interacted with regional deviatoric stresses from early-Jurassic to Santonian/Campanian times. Halokinetic wedges of Jurassic and Early Cretaceous carbonates thin toward the diapir, recording early salt mobilisation. Inverted relics of Apto-Albian rift depocenters are aligned along the northern margin of the Toulon Belt and the adjacent Bandol belt that lies to the west. The Turonian-Coniacian Revest depocenter developed due to localized strong asymmetrical growth of the Mont Caume diapir. The three-dimensional form and growth of the diapir controlled lateral migration of the Revest depocenter, thickness variations, progressive unconformities, and the westward increase in stratal overturning of a flap.
