Table of Contents Collaboratively Developing a Web site with Artists in Cajamarca, Peru: A Participatory Action Research Study Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Amanda S. Alexander 2010 ABSTRACT This study considers the collaborative processes developed in creating a Web site with the Colors and Creations cooperative of artists in Cajamarca, Peru. Working through a participatory action research methodology, the study employed autoethnographic methods, “make” sessions and narrative research facilitating the emergence of participant stories about the collaborative process. These participants include nine artists from Cajamarca, Peru; Lisa Fousek, an undergraduate Visual Communications and Design student; anonymous Web users from the United States and Peru; and myself as researcher. Additional collaborators include Web Developer Brian Hill and Research Assistant Ryan Johnston. The study is grounded in critical and postcolonial theories and decolonizing methods that set the stage for the collaborative process. After reconsidering literature on non-governmental organizations’ work with indigenous populations, exporters, entrepreneurs, businesses, and Fair Trade organizations working with artists in Peru, I review similar studies conducted in other developing nations and projects using participatory action research. Based on empirical observation, field notes, participant’s journals, surveys, interviews and “make” sessions, several significant themes emerged; those revolving ii around issues of trust within the group, international economic policy issues (dis)serving the development of direct trade with artists through online selling, challenges surrounding international shipping, and language. Recommendations for future research and imagined subsequent studies could further knowledge about grass-roots development and advance the cause of social justice, cultural survival and economic sustainability. This study served the self-defined needs of participating artists as we collectively created a Web site through which customers can learn about traditional Peruvian culture, craft techniques and products. A byproduct of the study was my developing a deeper understanding of international development, cultures and those relationships and practices of nongovernmental organizations, Fair Trade advocates, policy makers, business(wo)men, and international development firms who are involved in international development, trade and cultural exchange. iii Dedicated to my artist friends in Peru and all those who supported me in this process. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, I wish to thank my advisor Dr. James H. It advocates the payment of a higher price to exporters as well as higher social and environmental standards. It focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries, most notably handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, honey, cotton, wine,[2] fresh fruit, chocolate, flowers, and gold.[3] Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect that seek greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers – especially in the South.     annual report 03|04 Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International Shopping for a better world Shopping… ANNUAL REPORT 2003 | 2004 8 Last January, Switzerlandʼs second largest supermarket chain and leading distributor of Fairtrade labelled products decided that henceforth, it would sell only Fairtrade-labelled bananas. The year before, McDonaldʼs in Switzerland started selling Fairtrade coffee in all its outlets. At around the same time on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, Dunkinʼ Donuts, Americansʼ default address for take-out breakfast, joined Fairtrade, followed a few months later by the worldʼs largest grocery producer Proctor & Gamble. In the ensuing months, Europeʼs biggest supplier to canteens and restaurants signed up to Fairtrade. Instead of talking about companiesʼ increasing participation in Fairtrade however, I must salute the driving force behind it: consumers who care. Consumers who want the worldʼs disadvantaged producers to have a chance to realize their dreams of a decent living by purchasing Fairtrade products. These consumers are the real reason behind the more than 40% growth of Fairtrade labelled products in 2003 – compared to +21% in 2002. To assure consumers that their money really reaches those that need it most, and that this money is actually invested in sustain- able development, major companies are following the example of World Shops, church groups and thousands of other pioneers of Fair Trade by using a Fairtrade label such as “Max Havelaar”, “Transfair”, or national Fairtrade labels that provide an independent guarantee to all claims made. This guarantee is provided by FLO (Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International). FLO is a world-wide network of producers, trading companies and national labelling initiatives that sets Fairtrade standards and provides Fairtrade certification and trade auditing.

    STRATEGIC PLAN 2017-2027 RWANDAN FORUM FOR ALTERNATIVE TRADE Compiled by Wim Troosters November 2016 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The development of the strategic plan signals the start of a new era for RWAFAT. The plan has been formulated during a consultative process from January until October 2016, including a participatory workshop hosted on the 18th of August in Kigali. The overall methodology of the strategic planning process is based on four (4) basic but fundamental questions: Where are we now?, Where do we want to go?, How are we going to get there? and finally, How are we going to monitor our progress?. By answering these questions we have been able to better understand our organisation and the environment we work in and there from we have crafted a new path for the future of our organisation. We are sincerely confident that by delivering on our vision and mission statement we, as well as our beneficiaries, will grow and prosper for many years to come. Were are we now? The first part of the strategic plan is essential in order for the organisation to understand its internal and external environment and to establish a clear long term vision and mission for a period of 10 years (2017-2026). We start off with a context analysis which provides a clear formulation of the fair trade sector and its different approaches, including an overview of its most important stakeholders. In order to shape our long term strategy, a thorough analysis of both the external and internal environment of the organisation is necessary. The evaluation of the external environment is based on a the PESTEL approach, which consists of an analysis of the political, legal, economical, social, technological, environmental and demographic macro trends.

Abstract This report aims to assess (1) the extent to which the international Fair Trade movement, especially from 1964 to the present, can be said to have successfully achieved its goals, (2) what factors caused the various successes and failures of this movement, and (3) what these findings suggest about how modern social movements should strategize. The analysis highlights strategic implications for a variety of movements, especially those focused on moral circle expansion. Key findings of this report include that engaging directly with mainstream market institutions and dynamics can enable a social movement to influence consumer behavior much more rapidly than efforts to build “alternative” supply chains, though such mainstream engagement may also lead to co-option and a lowering of standards; and social movements may need to prioritize strategies to resist pressure from private sector businesses to weaken the standards of certified products.
