A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Social-Ecological Indicators A CROSS-SECTIONAL ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL-ECOLOGICAL INDICATORS AND RESILIENCE ON THE ISLAND OF CHILOE, CHILE by ARIANA PITCHON (Under the Direction of Elois Ann Berlin) ABSTRACT As aquaculture gains prominence as a major economic industry, and as wild- capture fisheries decline, coastal communities on Chiloé Island in southern Chile are facing inevitable social-ecological change. This research provides a cross- sectional, proxy-longitudinal study of indicators of resilience in a coastal community on Chiloé that is undergoing a transformation from small-scale fisheries to wage labor in aquaculture firms. Systematic data collection and analysis revealed that maintaining a high degree of specific resilience indicators is more likely to occur among fishermen who do not become aquaculture employees, and that even higher scores resulted from fishermen who became members of a small-scale, native species aquaculture cooperative. This information can serve as a model for sustainable development strategies and resilience in other coastal communities facing transformations due to changing ecological and economic factors. Using original documents I gathered in research trips to Chile and Spain, I am able to reconstruct the debates that went on both sides of the Atlantic over funds, protection from ’ th pirates, and indigenous slavery that so defined Chile s formative 17 century. While my conclusions are unique, frontier residents from Paraguay to northern New Spain were also dealing with volatile indigenous alliances, threats from European enemies, and questions about how their tiny settlements could get and keep the attention of the crown.

En esta mitología, que continúa vigente en el siglo XXI, se refleja la importancia que tiene el mar en la vida de los chilotes. El Trauco, famoso personaje de la mitología chilota. La mitología chilota se formó a partir de la mezcla de antiguas religiones de los pueblos indígenas (chonos y huilliches) que habitaron esta zona, y de las leyendas y supersticiones traídas por los conquistadores españoles que, en 1567 comenzaron el proceso de conquista en Chiloé, y con ello el inicio de la fusión de elementos o sincretismo que formarían una mitología propia. Esta mitología creció y prosperó, al mantenerse muy aislada de otras creencias y mitos que se desarrollaron o existían en Chile, debido al aislamiento que sufrió el archipiélago al quedar separado del resto de las posesiones españolas en Chile, cuando fueron abandonadas o destruidas por los mapuches todas las ciudades entre el río Biobío y el canal de Chacao, después del desastre de Curalaba en 1598. Jerarquía de criaturas mitológicas El rango más alto correspondería a Tenten Vilu y Caicai Vilu, quienes en una lucha legendaria y titánica, crearon el Archipiélago. Más abajo de Caicai Vilu estaría el Millalobocomo Rey de los mares, junto a su mujer la Huenchula y los tres hijos de ambos, el Pincoy como el príncipe de los mares, la Pincoya y la sirena chilota como princesas; quienes lo ayudan en la tarea de manejar los mares.

  • The Geography of Chile, Characterised by a Narrow and Long Strip of Land Located Between the High Ranges of the Andes Mountains
    ABSTRACT RESULTS CONSIDERING ONLY NEW WURs (ND+UA) RESULTS CONSIDERING ALL GRANTED WURs (ND+UA+RN) The geography of Chile, characterised by a narrow and long strip of land located between the high ranges of the Andes mountains and the Pacific Ocean, provides an exceptional scenario for analysing spatial and temporal variability of climate and water resources. Chile is positioned in the 20th rank of water availability per capita, however, around a 70% of the national population is located in arid and semiarid regions. These regions have experienced significant water shortages during the last decade, which have affected water security and ecosystems. Therefore, water shortages and water governance are major issues to be addressed in Chile in the Case 1 Case 3 Anthropocene. Regarding water governance, the Chilean water allocation system is based on a 47 out of 49 catchments 49 out of 51 catchments are overallocated in North are overallocated in North water use rights (WURs) market, with limited regulatory and supervisory mechanisms, where and Central macrozones and Central macrozones the volume to be granted as permanent and eventual WURs is calculated from streamflow records when they are available. A recent study on a semi-arid catchment in central Chile emphasized the urgent need to revise the water allocation methodology, which at the moment does not account for the non-stationarity of hydrological processes. This limitation has caused an over-exploitation of water supplies in the study catchment. To further explore these allocation system limitations and to provide robust recommendations, in this study we extend the former study and provide the first large sample diagnosis of water use rights and water supply, covering 516 basins from the catchment dataset for large sample studies in Chile, CAMELS-CL.
