Columbus County is one of the Southeast’s premier hunting and fishing locales. Covering 954 square miles, major swaths of the county are forested or intertwined with fertile fields. Beautiful Lake Waccamaw, one of the largest natural between Florida and New York, is well known for its schools of white perch. Three wild and scenic rivers, the Lumber, Waccamaw and Cape Fear, wind their way through scenic lowlands on the way to the Atlantic Ocean and provide bass, catfish, crappie and bream fishing.

The historic building is on the National Register of His- toric places and the architect was Joseph F. Leitner. The stately building sits in the center of a round-about inter- secting old Highways 74-76 and 701. The four streets that meet at the round-about are Washington, Pinckney, Jefferson and Madison. This area, known as Courthouse Square, is the legal hub of the county. Within walking distance are many attorney offices as well as supporting government offices, with the newest being the 2015 Columbus County Courthouse project, built to accommodate larger courtrooms. The new brick courthouse is nestled between the Court Square area and Smith Street. Plans are pending to renovate the historic courthouse.
