Thant expressed sympathy for the Cuban people and acknowledged the right for Cuba to submit their considerations for the resolution to the crisis. The Cuban requests included lifting the American blockade, fulfilling Castro's 5 Points, and no UN inspection of the missile bases. Besides the meeting with the Secretary General, Pavlicek also recounts the meeting of a Latin American delegation including representatives from Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Uruguay and Mexico. All nations but Mexico refused to give in to U.S. pressures, and stood in support of Cuba. Pavlicek then moves on to cover the possible subjects of Castro's speech on 1 November, including the Cuban detention of anticommunist groups in country and the results of the negotiations with U Thant. Come say the Cold War began even It7 before the end of World War II, but Soviet leader Joseph Stalin officially initiated it when he attacked his wartime Allies in a speech in February 1946. Thp next month at Westminster College, Fulton, Mo., Winston S. Churchill, former British Prime Minister, made his "Iron Curtain" speech, noting that all the eastern European capitals were now in Soviet hands. The US Army Air Forces r had demobilized much of its World War II strength even as Moscow provoked Communist Party take-overs in Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia in 1947 and 1948. Emboldened, the USSR began a blockade of the Western- controlled sectors of Berlin in spring 1948, intending to drive out the Allies. The newly independent US Air Force countered with a massive airlift of food and supplies into Berlin. C-54 Skymasters like the one at left earned their fame handling this mission. The Soviet Union conceded failure in May 1949, and a C-54 crew made the Berlin Airlift's last flight on September 30, 1949. In the following decades, conflicts flared between the USSR and satellite countries. In this 1968 photo, Czechs carry a comrade wounded in Prague during the Soviet invasion to crush Alexander Dubcek's attempt at reform. -

I I Occasionally, the volume suffers from the problem of repetition. This was proba- bly an editorial choice, and it does serve to bolster the truth-value of these memoirs; yet, in my view, this repetition weakens the force of the selections and makes it more likely that the reader will become desensitized to the real tragedies described in the memoirs. This said, Till My Tale Is Told is an important testimony to the Stalinist years and very useful as a teaching tool. Each selection is introduced by someone who knew the author of the piece (and/or by the editor of the volume). There is a good glossary and a short history of events at the back of the book as well as two short, in- formation-packed introductions (to the English and Russian editions) by Simeon Vilensky, and an afterword by John Crowfoot. The translations are good. And each of the testimonies begins with a photograph of the author - some in their youth, some in old age; this visual evocation provides intimacy and poignancy to the stories told in words. The original volume, Dodnes' tiagoteet (A Burden Borne to This Day) is longer by seven memoirs than the English edition; this editing down is an excellent choice as it makes the book more suitable for teaching. Overall, this is an intelligent volume - well thought-out and well put together. Till My Tale Is Told adds a great deal to those accounts already published: it delineates perspectives that are often different from the well-known accounts of Ginzburg and Solzhenitsyn and enhances such recent works as the diary selections in the 1995 Intimacy and Terror (Garros, Korenevskaya, La- husen, editors). -

New Haven: Yale University Press, 2005. xii + 384 pp. (Paper US$ 7.00) Havana: The Making of Cuban Culture. Antoni KAPCIA. Oxford: Berg Publishers, 2005. xx + 236 pp. (Paper US$ 24.95) Richard Gott, Antoni Kapcia, and Samuel Farber each approach Cuba through a new lens. Gott does so by providing a broad-sweep history of Cuba, which is epic in scope, attaches importance to social as much as politi- cal and economic history, and blends scholarship with flair. Kapcia homes in on Havana as the locus for Cuban culture, whereby cultural history becomes the trope for exploring not only the city but also Cuban national identity. Farber revisits his own and others’ interpretations of the origins of the Cuban Revolution. All three are driven by an interest in the Revolution, and yet are drawn to history – Gott from journalism, Kapcia from literature, and Farber from political science. Gott and Kapcia, both British-based, cover five centuries of history since the Spanish conquest, though their strengths lie in the more contemporary period. This is evidenced in the uneven balance of their treat- ment. Gott devotes less than one-quarter of his book to the pre-868 period, and fully half to the post-953 years. In Kapcia’s book, only one of the chap- ters is pre-twentieth century, and half is on the post-959 revolutionary years. -

This is the sort of situation the Soviet Union found itself in when President Kennedy in 1961 announced that the United States would set a goal of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth before the end of the decade. -

Introduction Game theory applied to political situations offers a unique approach to analyzing and understanding international relations. Yet the rigid structure that lends itself so well to mathematics is not practical in the real world . It lacks a built in mechanism for determining a player's preferences, which is a key part of an international "game" or situation. Strategic culture, another international relations theory, is quite the opposite. Critics claim it suffers from a lack of structure, but it captures the spirit of international actors and what makes them tick. This paper explores the idea of pairing the two otherwise unrelated theories to bolster both in the areas where they are lacking in order to provide a more complete understanding of international states' behavior and motivations. Brief Summary of Major Theories The theories presented in the following pages are drawn from distinct schools of thought; consequently it is necessary to provide some background information. -

The Hungry Mind Lab 2016 Materials for imQ Project The Cuban Missile Crisis The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13-day confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union over Soviet ballistic missiles deployed in Cuba that took place between October 16 and October 28 in 1962. Information about the Cuban Missile Crisis was broadcast on television worldwide, and it was the one event in history that brought the Cold War closest to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. Following from the enmity between the United States and the Soviet Union since the end of World War II in 1945, the United States was concerned about the rise of Communism, and a Latin American country allying openly with the USSR, short for Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, was unacceptable. In addition, the United States had recently suffered a public embarrassment, because of the failed invasion at the Bay of Pigs in April 1961 under President John F. Kennedy. The invasion had been attempted by a group known as Brigade 2506 that consisted of 1400 paramilitaries, who had been trained and funded by the United States government's Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Launched from Guatemala on 17 April 1961, the Brigade 2506 had intended to land at the Bay of Pigs and to overthrow Cuba's increasingly communist government but it was defeated within three days by the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, who were under the direct command of Cuba's Prime Minister Fidel Castro. After the events at the Bay of Pigs, the former American President Eisenhower told Kennedy that now the Soviets were "embolden to do something that they would otherwise not do." Indeed, the failed invasion created the impression with Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev and his advisers that Kennedy was indecisive and, as one Soviet adviser wrote about Kennedy: "too young, intellectual, not prepared well for decision making in crisis situations .. -
