Careers Update News for Careers Practitioners January 2018 CAREERS UPDATE NEWS FOR CAREERS PRACTITIONERS JANUARY 2018 UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE COURSES MOST CONTENTS POPULAR IN VICTORIA The University of Melbourne’s Arts and Science degrees are the most popular courses in Second round offers 2 Victoria, according to the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre’s (VTAC) first preference applications for study in 2018. Melbourne National Merit 6 More than 52,973 students received an offer of place in the first round at a Victorian Scholarship university this year. Science Start Up Acting Vice-Chancellor and Provost Professor Carolyn Evans said that the University was 6 Scholarship pleased to have attracted so many high achieving students. “Our five largest undergraduate degrees (Arts, Biomedicine, Commerce, Design and Bachelor of Design 7 Science) all received applications from students with ATARs of 99.9 or higher,” Professor Pathways Scholarship Evans said. Contact 8 “Likewise the Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholars Program for high-achieving students continues to prove popular among students with 154 offers.” Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarships are awarded to students who achieved an ATAR or equivalent of 99.9 or above. They attract some of the most academically able students to the University of Melbourne, where they receive a scholarship and a guaranteed place in the graduate program of their choice. Professor Evans said that the University’s thriving Access Melbourne equity program increased its offers from 2202 last year to 2350 this year, comprising 31 per cent of all University of Melbourne offers. “This ensures that more students from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds will receive a place in the University,” Professor Evans said. “For students still looking to secure course entry, second round offers provide an opportunity to change your preferences and attain your preferred degree.” As well the university announced three new scholarships to coincide with the first-round offers. Orientation occurs online from the moment they accept their offer. The online resources are vast and we recommend beginning with the video that has students talking about their experiences at orientation and how attending it helped them settle in. In addition, the following on-campus sessions have been organised: 24 January Bachelor of Science Science: Day 1 25 January Bachelor of Design Pre-Semester Program 29 January Bachelor of Biomedicine Enrolment Advice Day Other ongoing orientation activities occur between 12- 28 February and include sessions on “getting the most out of lectures”, “money, money, money”, “tutorial discussions strategies module 1”. This year the University will be expanding their participation in Round 2 providing a great opportunity for your students to realise their dream of studying at UM. The ATARs required to secure a Round 2 offer are competitive so students should make sure to change their preferences accordingly. Students will need to change their preference by 4pm 29 January to get an offer in Round 2. If they already have a course offer they can simply move their preferred course above their offered course to ensure they are considered for Round 2. Students must log into their VTAC account to change their preference. For students who have not put in a VTAC application there is one more opportunity for them to get an offer in Round 2 and commence at the University of Melbourne on Monday 26 February. Post January 1 applications open on 17 January at 10am and close on 22 January 5pm. Applications can be made by clicking here. MELBOURNE CHANCELLORS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS The University made 166 offers to students were eligible for the Melbourne Chancellors Scholarship. The scholarships are awarded to talented undergraduate students in recognition of their outstanding academic achievement during their Australian Year 12 or International Baccalaureate (IB). What are the benefits? • HECS Student Contribution exemption for the full duration of a Commonwealth Supported Place in a Bachelor degree course and a concurrent Diploma course ($17 500-$32 500) • Living allowance for the standard full-time duration of the Bachelor degree course and concurrent Diploma course with a value of: • $5,000 per year for students who studied in Victoria • $10,000 per year for students who studied outside Victoria • Melbourne Global Scholars Award of up to $2,500 for an approved period of overseas study as an Exchange or Study Abroad student • Guaranteed Commonwealth Supported Place in one of the professional master degrees for students who meet the prerequisite course and entry requirements for the master degree Students who live in rural or regional Victoria or outside Victoria are eligible for New to Melbourne Accommodation. To support their transition to Melbourne, the University will reserve a place in a residential facility close to the Parkville Campus for the first year of their studies. The offer does not include the cost of the accommodation.
