Cewsjournal Nr. 120, 29.10.2019 8 Nr. 120|29.10.2019 Editorial Liebe Leser*innen, mit dem von Anke Lipinsky, Alice Farneti und Heike Pantelmann verfassten Schwerpunktthema des vor Ihnen liegenden CEWSjournals wollen wir den Dialog zwischen Forschung und Praxis zum Thema der sexualisierten Gewalt in der Wissenschaft fördern. Das nächste CEWSjournal wird einen zweiten Beitrag zum gleichen Thema enthalten, darauf aufbauend sollen die strukturierten Informations- angebote des CEWS um eine entsprechende Themenseite ergänzt werden. Zudem lade ich Sie schon heute zum CEWS-Doppelkolloquium am 2. Dezember 2019 in Köln ein: Alice Farneti wird das Fallbeispiel der Montrealer Universitäten vorstellen, während Lisa Mense und Heike Mauer ihre aktuellen Untersuchungsergebnisse zur Umsetzung gesetzlicher Vorgaben zur Verhinderung sexualisierter Gewalt an NRW-Hochschu- len referieren werden. Auf diese Art und Weise kombiniert das CEWS Forschung und Wissenstransfer mit dem Ziel, effektive Strategien zur Gewährleistung eines für alle Geschlechter sicheren Lebens- und Arbeitsortes in der Wissenschaft implementie- ren zu können. SCHWERPUNKT: Die bereits 2003 gegründete bukof-Kommission „Sexualisierte Diskriminierung und Gewalt“ (SDG) definiert in ihrem 2018 veröffentlichten Grundsatzpapier „Sexualisierte Diskriminierungen und Gewalt sind Formen der Geschlechter- GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE diskriminierung, Verstöße gegen den Grundsatz der Gleichbehandlung und Angriffe auf die Würde und Persönlichkeitsrechte der Betroffenen. Hierzu IN ACADEMIA zählen unerwünschte sexualisierte Anspielungen und Handlungen bis hin zu schweren Straftaten wie Stalking, Nötigung oder Vergewaltigung.“ Bis heute gibt es in Deutschland keine bundesweite Untersuchung zu sexualisierter Diskri- minierung und Gewalt in der Wissenschaft, die Hochschul(en)leitungen zeichnen sich eher durch ein ambivalentes Verhaltensmuster aus: Fälle sexualisierter Gewalt, so sie überhaupt von den Betroffenen „gemeldet“ werden, bleiben möglichst unter der Decke, vermeintlich um der akademischen Reputation der Einrichtung nicht zu schaden. Täter*innen bleiben unsichtbar und haben keine einschneidenden Konsequenzen zu befürchten, die Opfer werden – auch präventiv – nicht geschützt. Das muss sich ändern.     Prodigals in Love: Narrating Gay Identity and Collectivity on the Early Internet in China by Gang Pan A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Gang Pan 2015 Prodigals in Love: Narrating Gay Identity and Collectivity on the Early Internet in China Gang Pan Doctor of Philosophy Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto 2015 Abstract This dissertation concerns itself with the eruption of a large number of gay narratives on the Chinese internet in its first decade. There are two central arguments. First, the composing and sharing of narratives online played the role of a social movement that led to the formation of gay identity and collectivity in a society where open challenges to the authorities were minimal. Four factors, 1) the primacy of the internet, 2) the vernacular as an avenue of creativity and interpretation, 3) the transitional experience of the generation of the internet, and 4) the evolution of gay narratives, catalyzed by the internet, enhanced, amplified, and interacted with each other in a highly complicated and accelerated dynamic, engendered a virtual gay social movement. Second, many online gay narratives fall into what I term “prodigal romance,” which depicts gay love as parent-obligated sons in love with each other, weaving in violent conflicts between desire and duty in its indigenous context. The prodigal part of this model invokes the archetype of the Chinese prodigal, who can only return home having excelled and with the triumph of his journey.

Im Rahmen dieses Diskurses wer- den zwei Hauptströmungen identifiziert: die sog. Körperschrift (body writing) von einerseits Autorinnen international erfolgreicher Romane wie Wei Hui und Sheng Keyi, anderseits auch von einer Dichterinn der jüngeren Generation Zheng Xiaoqiong und die sog. Lower Body-Bewegung (Dichterinnen Yin Lichuan und Wu Ang). Die Dissertation positioniert die Dichterin Zhai Yongming im Zentrum der auf den Körper und die Sex- Gender-Differenz ausgerichteten Weiblichkeitsdiskurse der Übergangszeit von einem sozialis- tischen zu einem neoliberal-kapitalistischen Gesellschaftssystem. Das Schreiben von Zhai Yongming lässt sich keiner von den beiden oben genannten Hauptströmungen eindeutig zuordnen, trotzdem hat es deren Vokabularien und Trajektorien massgeblich beeinflusst. Am Werdegang Zhais, Chinas bekanntesten zeitgenössischen Dichterin, wird gezeigt wie das Körper-Schreiben synchron mit den gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen dieser drei Jahrzehnte mehrere Phasen durchlief, teilweise sich neu erfand, teilweise aber auch gerne auf traditionell poetische Vorbilder zurückgriff. Theoretisch wie methodisch positioniert sich die Arbeit im Überlappungsraum der Literaturwissenschaften, Kultursoziologie und Gender Studies. My dissertation investigates discourses of the body in literature and theory in the People’s Republic of China from the late 1980s until the 2010s. This body turn is examined through the lens of female-authored texts. I argue, that in poetry and fiction the body stood at the centre of an emancipatory feminist project.

    Writing beyond the wall: translation, cross-cultural exchange and Chen Ran’s A Private Life Kay Schaffer, University of Adelaide Xianlin Song, University of Adelaide Translation need not guarantee the reciprocity of meaning between languages. Rather, it presents a reciprocal wager, a desire for meaning as value and a desire to speak across, even under least favourable conditions. (Liu 1999b, 34) The past decade has witnessed an unprecedented rise in the global flow of knowledge, nowhere more apparent than in the exchange of ideas between China and modern western democracies. Since the late 1970s, when Deng Xiaoping introduced the Open Door Policy, China has experienced an influx of western ideas that have been instrumental in the country’s emergence on the global stage. At the same time, China’s increasing economic and political dominance has spurred a growing interest in modern Chinese culture in the rest of the world, including a desire to know more about Chinese philosophical traditions and cultural practices. Our interest concerns one aspect of this global flow—the translation of Chinese women’s autobiographical writing into English. This recent phenomenon has many benefits for Chinese and English-speaking readers; it: enables access to the ways western concepts like individualism, feminism, modernism, democracy, etc. have impacted upon Chinese women’s lives and texts; facilitates an exchange of feminist theories and critiques between Chinese and English- speaking audiences; allows aspects of Chinese culture censored ‘at home’ to be aired in foreign arenas; and makes possible the expression and an awareness of indigenous Chinese feminism for English-speaking readers.

I argue that this commodified version of feminism is highly curated, superficial, and docile, but also popular with advertisers and consumers alike. The core question at the centre of this research is how commercial feminism—epitomized by the trend of femvertising—influences the feminist discursive field. Initially, I situate femvertising within the wider trend of consumer feminism and consider the implications of a marketplace that speaks the language of feminism.

Half of the casualties were civilian. Republican China, not unlike the Union government during the American Civil War and the European states during the First World War, began to manage the war dead. My dissertation, titled “The Sovereignty of the War Dead: Martyrs, Memorials, and the Makings of Modern China, 1912-1949,” examines Republican China’s effort to collect, commemorate, and compensate military and civilian dead in the first half of the twentieth century. I analyze how various government policies, such as the construction of martyrs’ shrines in every county, the tracking of casualties by locality, the compilation of martyrs’ biographies, and the distribution of gratuities to families of the war dead, contributed to the processes of state-building and nation- making in China and shaped China’s social and cultural institutions in most profound ways.

    Carleton College 2011-2012 Academic Catalog Carleton‘s Academic Catalog is produced by the Office of the Registrar. The provisions of this catalog are subject to change without notice and do not constitute an irrevocable contract between any students and Carleton College. As required by state and federal law, Carleton College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, sex, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, status with regard to public assistance, age, or disability in providing employment or in its educational programs and activities. Historically Speaking Carleton College was founded by the Minnesota Conference of Congregational Churches, under the name of Northfield College, on November 14, 1866. Preparatory school classes began in September 1867, but it was not until 1870 that the Reverend James W. Strong took office as the first president, the first college class was formed, and the first on-campus building was begun. It was agreed at the outset that after one year formal church control should end, but throughout its formative years, the College received significant support and direction from the Congregational churches. Although it is now autonomous and non-sectarian, the College respects these historical ties and gives continuing recognition to them through membership in the Council for Higher Education of the United Church of Christ. By the fall of 1871, the name of the College had been changed to honor an early benefactor, William Carleton of Charlestown, Massachusetts, who earlier that year had bestowed a gift of $50,000 on the struggling young college. At the time, it was the largest single contribution ever made to a western college, and it was made unconditionally, with no design that the name of the College should be changed.
