    Ford Families A Partial Listing of the Descendants of Some Colonial Families Eugene E. Trimble 5203 Flanders Avenue Kensington, Maryland 20895 September 1, 1982 Preface These are incomplete genealogies of selected Ford families located in the northwest or up-country of South Carolina just prior to and subsequent to the Revolutionary War. Most of the families followed herein moved to Tennessee and then to Kentucky before 1800. Some few families remained in South Carolina or Tennessee and some moved to Texas. The writer has never had adequate time to research these people, so this work in South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky is very limited in scope. To facilitate the orderly presentation of data for many individuals, each person born with the surname Ford is given a two-part number divided by a dash ( -). The first part of this two-part number denotes the family group, i.e., each individual with the first part of this two-part number beginning with one ( 1- ) has descended from a common ancestor and his relationship to all other individuals with the same first number is known. The Ford name is extremely numerous, with many early immigrants, and any effort to determine relationships or non-relationships of all these early families is futile. In researching Fords, many groups were found. This research was done for the purpose of sorting out the two Ford lines (Groups 1- and 2- ), and in the process quite a bit was learned about other Ford groups, some of which are included herein. It is hoped this material will help the reader with his own Ford connections by eliminating or identifying with those shown herein.

    Philip D. Curtin Presi dent American Historical Association 1983 Philip D. Curtin, president of the American Historical Association, is the Herbert Baxter Adams Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University. Born in Philadelphia in 1922, Professor Curtin spent the majority of his younger years in West Virginia, returning to Pennsyl vania to finish secondary school, and to enter Swarthmore College in 1941. Interrupting his undergraduate work for three years’ service in the United States Merchant Marines, Professor Curtin completed the BA, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1948. Upon receipt of this degree he undertook graduate studies at Harvard University, gaining the MA and the PhD in 1949 and 1953 respectively. Professor Curtin’s dissertation “Revolution and Decline in Jamaica, 183D—1865” marked the beginning of an outstanding scholarly career addressing the social and economic influences shaping African and Caribbean history. Dr. Curtin’s teaching experience is extensive. Beginning in 195D with a teaching fellowship at Harvard University, he transferred in 1953 to Swarthmore College, rising from instructor to assistant professor of history before moving on to a nineteen-year engagement at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1956. While teaching at Wisconsin he founded and intermittently chaired both the Comparative World History and African Study programs, as well as the Department of African Languages and Literature (the first program of its kind in the United States); in 197D he was appointed the Melville J. Herskovits Professor of History. In 1975, Dr. Curtin returned East to teach at Johns Hopkins University where he chaired the Program of Atlantic Studies in History and Culture from 1976—79, and in 1982 was appointed the Herbert Baxter Adams Professor of History, a position he currently holds.

The history of the reHgious persecution of the Huguenots in France, from the massacre of St. Bartholomew to the infamous outrages which preceded and followed the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, is so familiar, through frequent graphic narra- tive, that any attempt at repetition here would be quite unneces- sary, were the means to be employed adequate. But recently this topic has been ably considered, and a comprehensive narra- tive of the establishment of the fugitive Protestants in the New World presented as well/ An unpretentious assembling ol scattered data relating to the Huguenot settlement in Virginia, and of families of the lineage, happily to serve as material in abler hands in the future, may only be essayed by the present editor. Desultory Walloon emigration to Virginia early in the seven- teenth century is indicated by names of record in the State Lmid Registry; and the Walloons of Leyden,- planning to fol- low the example of their Puritan neighbors, the Pilgrim F"athers of New England, presented, July 21, 1621, to Sir Dudley Carle- ton, the British Ambassador at the Hague, a petition signed by fifty-six heads of families, Walloon and French, all of the Reformed Religion, who desired to come to Virginia.
