Media Release Singapore Art Museum Reveals Singapore Biennale 2016 Artists and Artwork Highlights ‘An Atlas of Mirrors’ Explained Through 9 Curatorial Sub-Themes Singapore, 22 September 2016 – The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) today revealed a list of 62 artists and art collectives and selected artwork highlights of the Singapore Biennale 2016 (SB2016), one of Asia’s most exciting contemporary visual art exhibitions. Titled An Atlas of Mirrors, SB2016 draws on diverse artistic viewpoints that trace the migratory and intertwining relationships within the region, and reflect on shared histories and current realities with East and South Asia. SB2016 will present 60 artworks that respond to An Atlas of Mirrors, including 49 newly commissioned and adapted artworks. The SB2016 artworks, spanning various mediums, will be clustered around nine sub-themes and presented across seven venues – Singapore Art Museum and SAM at 8Q, Asian Civilisations Museum, de Suantio Gallery at SMU, National Museum of Singapore, Stamford Green, and Peranakan Museum. The full artist list can be found in Annex A. SB2016 Artists In addition to the 30 artists already announced, SB2016 will include Chou Shih Hsiung, Debbie Ding, Faizal Hamdan, Abeer Gupta, Subodh Gupta, Gregory Halili, Agan Harahap, Kentaro Hiroki, Htein Lin, Jiao Xingtao, Sanjay Kak, Marine Ky, H.H. Lim, Lim Soo Ngee, Made Djirna, Made Wianta, Perception3, Niranjan Rajah, S. Associate Artistic Director, Theatreworks, Singapore Associate Artist, The Substation, Singapore vertical submarine is an art collective from Singapore that consists of Joshua Yang, Justin Loke and Fiona Koh (in order of seniority). According to them, they write, draw and paint a bit but eat, drink and sleep a lot. Their works include installations, drawings and paintings which involve text, storytelling and an acquired sense of humour. In 2010, they laid siege to the Singapore Art Museum and displayed medieval instruments of torture including a fully functional guillotine. They have completed projects in Spain, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, The Philippines, Mexico City, Australia and Germany. Collectively they have won several awards including the Credit Suisse Artist Residency Award 2009, The President’s Young Talents Award 2009 and the Singapore Art Show Judges’ Choice 2005. They have recently completed a residency at Gertrude Contemporary in Melbourne. Annex A: Bios of Creative Directors - Clara Yee and Randy Chan Clara Yee Creative Director Singapore: Inside Out Tokyo Clara Yee is the creative director of nomadic creative house, in the wild. After graduating from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design London, Yee has been actively developing her creative practice, creating and collaborating across disciplines from fashion to spatial interventions. To date, Yee has worked with many prolific private and public clients, including Alexander McQueen, Barbican London and Warner Music. Her work has brought her on cross-country cultural adventures to Beijing, London, Mexico City, New York, Taiwan and Japan, where she collaborated with international talents. She has exhibited her works as part of London Design Festival, Taiwan Design Expo, Singapore Design Week and Archifest, showing at galleries in London, Singapore and USA such as Blackall Studios, Sculpture Square, Berkeley Foundation and Singapore Art Museum’s 8Q @ SAM. Yee is part of The Straits Times’ 30 rising stars of Singapore under 30 and is also a Forbes Asia’s inaugural 30 under 30 honouree. Randy Chan Creative Director Singapore: Inside Out Sydney One of Singapore's leading young architects, Randy's architectural and design experience includes work on projects as diverse as stage design, private housing, cluster housing and master-planning – all of which are guided by the simple philosophy that architecture and the aesthetics originate from the same impulse. Randy takes a multidisciplinary architectural approach to his projects and specializes in the convergence between Art and Architecture. His works have been published in numerous local architecture magazines and international publications, including Robert Powell’s Singapore Houses. -

Jun 03, 2011 17:13 +08 Singapore Pavilion Opens at the Venice Biennale 2011 Singapore artist Ho Tzu Nyen presents “The Cloud of Unknowing”, a video art installation at the Singapore Pavilion of the 54th Venice Biennale. The Pavilion will be officially opened on Wednesday, 1 June at the Salone di Ss. Filippo e Giacomo del Museo Diocesano di Venezia, Italyby the Chairman of the National Arts Council (NAC) Singapore, Mr Edmund Cheng. Mr Khor Kok Wah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, NAC, said, “I am pleased that Singapore continues to be a part of the Venice Biennale even as we strive to establish similar international platforms like the recently concluded Singapore Biennale, and Art Stage Singapore in January this year. Such international platforms are vital for the creative connections that are forged across borders and cultures.” The theme of this year’s Venice Biennale, “ILLUMInations”, calls for a reflection upon the conventions through which contemporary art is viewed. Ho’s audio-visual installation explores art history, looking at forms of illumination, luminance and of being transported by clouds. His piece portrays the sensory experience of eight different characters occupying apartments in a deserted, low-income public housing block in Singapore, each of whom has an encounter with a cloud which alternates between appearing as a figure, and a vaporous mist. “The Cloud of Unknowing” is commissioned and presented by The National Arts Council Singapore and supported by the Lee Foundation and Mori Art Museum. The curator of the pavilion, June Yap, is an independent curator based in Singapore. She has curated with the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (LASALLE) and the Singapore Art Museum. -

The idea for this exhibition was mooted in early 2014, for an exhibition of pottery works with a local theme, in paying tribute to earth’s gifts, without compromising the recognised styles and inspirations of the individual potters. Keeping to a small number of artists, each would develop his or her own mini ‘solo’ exhibition of at least 20 works. What followed was the development of the idea and various concepts by each potter, and numerous meetings over coffee and Japanese crackers at the rustic environment at Jalan Bahar Clay Studios (JBCS). As we journeyed through the processes, waited through firing sessions and saw creations unfolding, we learnt more about pottery, the materials used and their characteristics. We also got to know the potters a lot better, their backgrounds, experiences and aspirations. All those months finally bore fruit – culminating in a beautiful collection of more than 100 art pieces, using local and other clays and glazes, and fired at the Guan Huat Dragon Kiln at JBCS. -
