I didn’t manage to get my raised beds made for vegetable growing as planned, but I did knock down a shed, cleared some space in the garage, prune some trees and shrubbery and fill a builder’s skip! I do hope you had a productive break too. As you will already be aware the Government’s planned review on current restrictions took place on Monday and the announcement detailed that all children will return to school on Monday 8 March. We are looking forward to seeing all the children back in school and I’m sure that many of you are too! The Government have stated that attendance is mandatory, so we do expect to see all children back on this date. We are currently working on a plan of action and I will get details out to you next week. Many procedures and routines will continue to be in place to minimise the spread of the virus e.g. regular handwashing, extra cleaning in school, bubbles etc. Quote of the week: ‘I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that will not work.’ (Thomas A. Edison, inventor) PARENTS’ EVENING DATE CHANGE We have decided to change the dates of our Parents’ Evenings for the Spring term. This will allow teachers the time to welcome the children back into school and settle them, assess where they are in their learning and plan actions to put in place to support children in catching up on any areas where they need to do so. Therefore, our Parents’ Evenings this term will now be in the last week of the Spring term; Tuesday 23 and Thursday 25 March 2021. These will be virtual Parents’ Evenings via School Cloud, the same system we used in the Autumn term. A letter with the new details has been sent out via Arbor and is also available to view on our website: https://www.rossettacre.n-yorks.sch.uk/news/rescheduled-parents- evening/ WHOLE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY This week’s assembly was about RRS and the 3Cs, a reminder for the children of expectations in school. RRS are our school rules: Ready, Respectful and Safe. Our Golden Rule is ‘Treat others the way you would want to be treated.’ Our 3Cs are our core values that underpin our school vision of ‘Excellence and Happiness for All.’ The 3Cs are: Curiosity, Challenge and Community. We revisit RRS and the 3Cs regularly with the children in school. Next week, Miss Woodcock, Deputy Headteacher will be leading assembly. I don’t know what theme it will be based on, so it will be a surprise. I thought it would be nice for the children at home to at least have seen Miss Woodcock before they come back into school. W:\OfficeShared\Admin\NEWSLETTERS\Newsletters 2020-2021\Newsletter 25 February 2021 draft 3 (1).docx CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Mrs Tinfina who has successfully completed her THRIVE Childhood Licensed Practitioner training. The THRIVE approach helps adults support the social and emotional development of the children and young people they are working with. The training is substantial and I know that Mrs Tinfina put a lot of time and effort into completing it over the last 3 months. Mrs Tinfina will be using her new skills and knowledge to support children and staff in school, making a real difference with a range of tools and resources to improve children’s social and emotional needs. LIFE AT ROSSETT ACRE This week, there have been all sorts of things going on. We had a delivery of food hampers from the Rapid Relief Team for us to hand out to some of our families. We would like to say a big thank you to the Rapid Relief Team for their generosity. In Science, Year 5 have been studying the anatomy of a flower. They successfully dissected and identified the different parts. They also learnt the important jobs each part plays in the life cycle of a flowering plant. Look at some of the fabulous work they produced. INSPIRATIONAL PEOPLE Year 6 are learning about the lives of a range of inspirational people for the first two weeks of term. From computer scientists to inventors; politicians and artists; to writers and poets. We have enjoyed learning about Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridge and Kamala Harris using the slogan 'Rosa sat so that Ruby could walk and Kamala could run'. We discussed the meaning of this and investigated the lives of all three inspirational females. We shall be reading the poetry of Maya Angelou on Friday and looking at the links between her poetry and the segregation which occurred in the southern states of America in much of the twentieth century. There is one thing for certain: everybody we have learned about this week valued their education and were resilient despite the many hardships they faced in life. Here is the work I created for a lesson about the Mayan people. It tells you where they lived, what they wore, what they ate and what sort of people they were. Matilda D - Year 5 REMOTE LEARNING A huge well done to Afie and Sunny (Y1 & EYFS) who in the weeks of January, whilst learning at home, challenged themselves to raise money for the laptop appeal by running, walking and cycling 60km. They received £1 for every km they completed from their parents and donated £60 to the Trust Just Giving link. Thank you so much. Yesterday, I dropped into a few lessons taking place remotely in school. In EYFS, I observed Mrs Nimick’s class doing their morning check in. They were thinking about their favourite days of the week. Hannah’s favourite days were Monday and Tuesday as she got to see her school friends, Amber’s was a Sunday as she likes a Sunday Dinner and Daddy is at home and Eva likes a Saturday as she can get a lie in and do fun stuff! The children then went on to think about a number of rhymes and songs to do with the weather, including ‘rain, rain go away!’ In Y1, Miss Wolsey’s class were looking at rhyming words and even mentioned alliteration. They looked at the book ‘Don’t put your finger in the Jelly, Nelly! by Nick Sharratt, together. The children then identified words that rhymed with those Miss Wolsey had written on the board, for example: Cat: bat, hat, rat, pat, mat Snail: whale, wail, bail, hail, rail, scale, tail. It was great to see all the children learning at home, joining in and sharing their words too. In Y2, Miss Fordham was teaching a Science lesson. The children were identifying and comparing the suitability of a variety of everyday materials to design a sports kit for a sport of their choice. They used their previous learning on materials to help them to do this and were able to remember a lot of the properties of materials. Oliver made me smile when he decided that he wouldn’t make a sports kit out of rock as it would hurt. It certainly would! The children watched a clip of the highlights from the 2012 Olympics and named the different sports they had seen. This helped them to choose their own sport to design their sports kit for and what properties it would need to have e.g. stretchy, smooth, soft, absorbent etc. Year 3, Mrs Haslam/Mrs Aslam’s class had created a piece of shared writing about the Iron Wasp, which was apparently as big as a lion and crashed onto the roof of a school! Let’s hope that doesn’t happen! This was linked to their work on the Iron Man by Ted Hughes and they used Spurious, the metal sculpture in our wildlife area to base their character on. Year 4, in Mr Draper’s class they were adding 2 or more fractions and recapping and revising some other areas they had already studied, e.g. finding the difference between fractions, completing sequences, finding area of shapes and even Roman Numerals. Year 4, Mr Sims’s class were looking at philosophy and what it means in their History lesson, as part of their work on Ancient Greece. They were finding out how Greek Scholars have contributed to our knowledge and understanding of the World. They learned that ‘Philo’ means love and ‘Sophia’ means wisdom and therefore the word ‘philosophy’ means the love of wisdom/knowledge. They also learned about a number of philosophers such as Archimedes, Aristotle, Herodotus, Plato, Hippocrates, Pythagoras – some of these were mathematicians and I’m sure I saw Mrs Sims eyes light up and her excitement rise when she mentioned their names! CHARLIE’S RECIPES Charlie, our cook would like to share one of her wonderful recipes with you. Everyone in school loves Charlie’s biscuits, so now is your chance to enjoy them too.
