If you’re itching to get back in the garden after those long winter months, then it’s a good time to think about how you’re going to get rid of your unwanted weeds, twigs and grass cuttings. More than 5,000 tonnes of garden waste is thrown into the rubbish bin in Surrey every year instead of being recycled, which is bad for the environment and expensive for the taxpayer. However, there are three easy ways to deal with your garden waste. The most environmentally-friendly way is home composting as it rots down and produces a nutritious compost you can use in your garden. Visit the Recycle for Surrey website to buy a compost bin from just £13, and there’s also loads of help and advice to get you started. You can subscribe to your local council’s garden waste service, and have it collected fortnightly from your home. Why not talk to a neighbour if you don’t create enough garden waste on your own, as they might have room in their bin or you could share a subscription? Most bins cost around £50 a year, so well worth it if you create regular garden waste. And remember that garden waste can be taken to all of Surrey’s CRC community recycling centres free of charge. To find out more about home composting, garden waste subscription services and community recycling centres, go to recycleforsurrey.org.uk Be South & South East Britain in Bloom Some of our readers might not be aware that Gatwick Airport has an GREEN outstanding record in biodiversity, sustainability and conservationism, so it seems a natural progression that the airport is the headline sponsor for C with your CR this year’s RHS South and South East Britain in Bloom. garden More than 45% of the airport’s UK passengers hail from the South and wasteby South East BiB region, so the competition presents a great opportunity for Gatwick to connect with a broad community of gardeners, supporting social inclusion and recognising horticultural achievements, environmental responsibility and community participation. The airport has retained The Wildlife Trusts’ Biodiversity Benchmark Award for three years running, recognising its commitment to • Composting at home maintaining and enhancing the biodiversity of Gatwick’s 100-acre site • Joining your garden and surrounding area. The airport’s community engagement work helps local groups and volunteers in improving landscape appearance and waste collection service quality; and building awareness and understanding of habitat value and • Taking it to a community conservation. Rare species such as hazel dormice and the Long-Horn bee recycling centre have been recorded in the woods around the airport.
